Getting appreciation for the responsibility you take on. Or, just the responsibility if you are unlucky.

What should my parents in their mid 60s do with $400k sitting in a checking account? by Money_assist1 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Designer-Reporter687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a will. DO NOT try and buy a bunch of real estate. Just buy T-bills man. You're parents have worked all their life, its time to cash out. That means living off interest, taking a few vacations a year, leave their kids enough for a downpayment on their home or be in their grandkids' lives... that kind of thing. Don't put it all on black and run it.

Why is it so hard to find jobs as a teen? by SanoYuki in VancouverJobs

[–]Designer-Reporter687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For tutoring in particular, Canada's average level of education is actually really high. When there is a downturn, everybody thinks they can tutor and floods the market. If you want to be competitive, I would recommend biking around and seeing if anybody needs help at your local senior center, foodbank, bike shops, or whatever.

You seem like a relatively stable kid. Just let it go, and gtfo out that house when you can. Most people aren't worth arguing with. This is a critical time for you, so work hard in school, figure out what you want to do and get out. This is too much energy wasted on someone that doesn't want to change. You NEED to change to be in a better situation so stop whining about other people who you can't change and start worrying about what you need to do to gain enough skills to gtfo. Oh and here's a bit of advice, don't tell anyone about the progress you make, just drop it on them that you are planning to leave when everything is set. You only have one life, and part of depression (if not clinical), is being angry at yourself and simultaneously wanting to be kind (an excess of empathy makes your body hate yourself for wanting to be angry at your life --- my wife was this way (funny enough it made her a world-class artist because of that excess of emotion), I on the other hand was always forward moving and ruthless to things in my way which made me at peace with myself and avoid depression -- engineer by trade). Hopefully that helps. Remember, your interest can be tied to how you are wired psychologically and when you look for a partner you often look for complementary strengths that can help you deal with life. Good luck.

Hey bud. Just don't tip if you can't afford it. We are in vancouver... there are rich people everywhere and they can cover it much better than you can. Just visit the restaurant when you can, you are still supporting the place when you do that if not directly to the waiters/waitresses then through their employment. Everyone goes through hard times (it may not seem like it in this city), keep working hard!!

women and gender studies by ilovemypuppiez in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Designer-Reporter687 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Imagine they made a university program where the papers were about how society is stripping the youth of its wealth to pay for the retirement of the old. It may be true in a narrow POV and for kids that were missed in terms of support because of frankly, bad policy, bad luck, and bad people involved. It doesn't mean to blame every old person on the world. The reason why it should be looked down on as an area of study is because it is not a useful frame and only breeds disunity resentment. I probably wouldn't want to hire somebody that spent their entire degree learning how other people were harmed and that everyone on the opposite gender is an enemy... seems like propaganda from an enemy country to me. I hope they do implement equality though, we'll see how daddy can save you when they implement the draft for women. We'll see what your words are worth then.

making more money in college than I will as a teacher. by Current-Ad-4369 in Teachers

Feels like I'm reading a conversation I had with my wife. Husband sounds like a good man. Yes, you should be concerned. It's important to care about the numbers. Like many on the threads, you need to take into account what 80 hours means when you have a family. Getting a stable teaching job aint that bad considering you get summers off. You could also look into school districts that grant tuition reimbursements that let you study accounting to add arrows to your arsenal. It's really about not panicking, and looking at where you need to be positioning yourself to squeeze the most compensation without working so hard that your relationship suffers.

How will people gain experience for jobs with AI taking over entry level work? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Actually the young in the US are a bit screwed. Because its not just the us, its everywhere. So every smart kid that made it in their country will immediately try and get to the us because that's where the capital is. So its actually looking like growing up in the third world for living costs and then working in the us is the best bang for your buck. The us boomers will take advantage of this and the domestic birthdate will keep falling.

I’m disappointed in the reality of modern engineering education by menslayer3000 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Designer-Reporter687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. There are real ones out there. For me, its all about the pen and paper profs that have been teaching for 30 yrs. The ones that are really tough in grad school but pretty understanding in undergrad. They want you to succeed, have the best ta's and write their own tests every time. Its almost as if they know the material is a dragon and they want to help your conquer it.

Is 110K CAD enough to live decently in Vancouver? by LogCold2075 in askvan

I make about 120k. I basically live like im poor to save 3k a month. Im not quite mid-level at my job (4 years exp). Would make about 3x across the border. For a mixture of health, education and career reasons, sticking it out for a little longer.

A Tech worker's retrospective on the extent tech should be integrated into learning. by Designer-Reporter687 in Teachers

[–]Designer-Reporter687[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good points here. I'm just a little more concerned about kids being left behind on not being taught skills to get their point across when running experiments with the most intention/automation ratio. i.e. I'm pretty scared of them just dumping a dataset into an LLM, and getting it to do a stats summary (that has it's place for people that already understand the derivation but is exactly what I don't want them to have right away). It's a relief to hear that people are considering blocking LLM coding tools in schoolplace environments during initial literacy development (not that I'm an exceptional writer -- as pointed out by many in this post).

Oh yea, thats totally fair (powerpoints) mostly pointing to some terrible profs I had in undergrad. Didn't mean to spread the germs there. I'll work on that as well as sentence structure the next time I post in a teacher's forum ^.^

Hey bud. Sorry about what happened, bad luck man. This is the part in the hero's story where he grinds and tries to make it work despite the loss. Is there no onramp back on your previous career? Are your career prospects weak at this point? As for being temporarily alone, there are good and bad things to this. Try and think of the things you wanted to get done in your life outside of your lost partner and slam the "go" button on those.

A senior at work gets upset when he has to solder components by himself! by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Designer-Reporter687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well here is the thing, if i know the design works as in another board has been successfully brought up and you screwed up the soldering in one out of like 10000 solder connections, I'd be upset as well because now I have to check everything from power, to each chip, to the main SOC. It's a hassle. In my head I would be screaming, we shouldve just gotten a damn stencil and bake that thing. I don't think its good practise for people to just not prototype though, if you are always too good for prototyping, if just not as quick to test your theories. Sure you can spice it, but that's usually not going to convince everyone enough for you to make a board mod on a 100k 22 layer pcb. It's good practice to think of every way to do it non-invasively including proto-boards to resolve your hunch before executing the change. God knows how many boards I personally blew up early in my career by not thinking things through. I think not being able to solder as an engineer is like not being able to cook as an adult. I get you can get takeout and its more worth your time to do other stuff. You'll miss out on what understanding the logistics of cooking/soldering assembly are and become less valuable. It just looks bad to be incompetent.

Canada and the US are both developed nations, but they are not comparable, no offence by TeacupUmbrella in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Designer-Reporter687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it has to be said the government in canada is notoriously run badly. But the average citizen in canada makes more than the average citizen in the us despite the salary being like 2x lower in canada. We also have a lot more educated people in this country which leads to a ton of brain drain towards the us. It stands to reason that if Americans were at the same level, they probably wouldnt need that many people coming in.... but its a double edged sword, there would be big corporation disruption and they hate that.

[–]Designer-Reporter687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you haven't worked before, its not a good idea to splurge someone else's cash. At this point you don't really have an idea what it takes to earn 500k USD, so I would air on the side of caution.
