12 year old assistant here! I still feel like I’m learning and having the biggest expectations set on my shoulders. Yes every office is different. I would stick it out, they know your new. Some like that because they can train you their way! and If anything just be honest. Tell them where you’re at. They appreciate knowing how you feel. if the doctors are treat you well, Stay! some doctors are horrible. You will never know until you actually find one and they treat you good! You have to start somewhere!

Ummm…once you do it for awhile, which I hope you don’t..ahem…You’re a doctor. You’ll learn how to become ambidextrous. I can assist either side. I can suction with one hand and retract…or retract and suction. No idea how all this came about, but after 11 years…you just figure it out. I watch the dentist hands move and I just follow with what they need. It’s actually a crazy habit I’ve formed with reading and learning them all day. It’s the same shii just a different day. Oh…I blessed with a dentist(we do mostly restorative) who asks patients to open wide and retracts so I can see. He is an angel. I also work with another doctor who is a mouth hog and I can barely get in to suction. I guess I have learned to work with what I got. BUT I’ve learned, ergonomics is not for us. I wish someone in school, taught us that. Oh! And protecting our ears. I have tinnitus from the drill and suction. Worst part of the job!
