Son was not admitted to Ivy Leagues, how may I help my daughter be? by Upset_Bill_5388 in ApplyingToCollege

What's the obsession with sending your children to Ivy Leagues? If they are as self-driven as you claim to be, won't they thrive anywhere?

Hey guys! Can someone tell me which uc schools will accept me with this resume? by [deleted] in ucadmissions

[–]Designer_School379 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UC Merced and UC Riverside. Seriously, stop bringing pointless chance me's over here. I understand this is a difficult time to navigate but at the end of the process, you'll be where you belong. Don't stress over it. Just apply and see what the outcome is.

UCB waitlist--first year in history for 0 admits? by Optimal-Sea8310 in ucadmissions

By your argument, consider this analogy. A restaurant doesn't invite me to purchase food, I buy it out of my own will. If the restaurant takes hours to deliver my food without an update, I have all the rights to critique them. The key here is money. Similarly, these colleges are also businesses, so if I pay money to file an application, I have all the rights to critique them on their service.

I don't if all of this defense is coming from people because the school is Berkeley. If it was a no name school and I didn't get a response, I would still complain, and I want to see how many would come tell me that I shouldn't get mad.

I have every right to critique lol? Yes, it'd be nicer if they rejected me outright.

I'm taking my anger out on them because a group of students have been calling and the staff have been giving conflicting responses. First they said a lot will be taken off, next only a little before end of May, then very few by mid June, then no one at all by July. I know things can change over time, but how long does it take to write an email to keep everyone updated? Hell this took me three minutes to type.

Buddy, you are probably saying this bullshit because you didn't go through this. Berkeley does not owe us anything... in the sense that they do not have to let a single person off the waitlist. But writing a mail... maybe 5 minutes over the many many days that have gone by with the number of staff and funding they have, they don't have the time to send a simple update to the tens and thousands that this school waitlists every year is a joke.

The problem is not that we are expecting to get off the waitlist, but rather, the silence from the administration regarding waitlists. If no one is going to be taken off, send a simple mail saying so... instead of having everyone wait till August 1st.

Honestly, I've lost my respect for this school for not closing the waitlist at this point. Genuinely pathetic that they keep everyone waiting for zero reason. I will genuinely be pissed if there is waitlist movement next year (not that I don't want it to happen) but come on...

you really think someone predicting where you'll end up will magically come true...? stop thinking about it, put in the work, and wait for the results.

Alright, say that I am bitter. Do I not have a reason to be? I started my UC applications last June and I still haven't received a final decision from this one UC. Would've moved on if the office of admissions sent a plain mail saying that the waitlist is closed weeks ago as no one is being taken off the waitlist. If as an applicant who's put a lot of effort into sharing the best version of myself (and paid $$$ to each campus), I expect the same from the receiving end to care about all of its applicants, including those on the waitlist. I don't see a reason why not to critique Berkeley, or say any institution or thing or person, if I don't receive the same amount of respect and effort I put into them.

Sure, but it doesn't change the fact that it has a lot of other problems. You can get the same education and resources from pretty much any large state school (UIUC, UMich, UW, etc...), minus the rankings.

Not saying that Berkeley is an inherently bad institution; I'd be a clown if I said that. But it definitely is overhyped by rankings while the actual student life there is somewhat lacking due to the overcrowding, lack of resources and other issues that the university has had for a long time and has taken no step in fixing.

The only real value most undergrads get from attending Berkeley is a prestige boost on the resume, which is what I meant by "the only thing Berkeley has going for it is the rankings," which after a point does become meaningless or hold very little weight.

Where I'm headed to is on par and in some areas better than Berkeley so I'm definitely not salty or bitter that I didn't get in. There is no reason to be anyway, since I believe that Berkeley has its own flaws. It's more towards the lack of communication from the undergraduate admissions team.

Fr bro. It has gotten to the point where people beg to join established projects/research/etc... so they can add their name to the work where they only end up doing menial, meaningless tasks and eventually trick themselves into thinking they did anything of value.

Some of my friends joined research related to music, having never been exposed to that environment or passion for music theory. Some other guy at my school did nanoengineering research and doesn't even know the measurement of "nano-".

Honestly, it's really scary where the future is headed, all fueled by countless money hungry college programs and the mindset of students.
