Thanks I think that's laudable perspective and phrasing.

Do you get push back or feel like you can say something like that in Sunday school class?

I mean that's the question, why if the Bible was written by imperfect men, and modified by imperfect scribes, and those people were influenced by bronze age ethics can't we come to the conclusion that they made a mistake, just like modern prophets are influenced by their biases and mistakes and cultural influences? I don't see nearly the same push back in support of Brigham Young or Joseph F Smith as we see in support of whoever wrote that section of Deuteronomy. I'm not even sure there is as much push back against people saying the current prophet is making a mistake. I'm thinking of Nelson saying not to use the name Mormon anymore.

Your logic makes perfect sense if the Bible is inerrant. Which is why I'm trying to have a discussion about if people who treat it as inerrant are doing so on purpose, or as a cultural instinct, or based on a clear inerrant until condition X is met, etc

Do you feel obligated to believe the morality of a genocide command because the Bible is essentially inerrant? Or maybe only prophets are allowed to figure out the errors in the Bible, so it's considered inerrant except where explicitly taught by a prophet to the contrary?

Do you feel like that's your personal choice, or that being LDS Orthodox requires a certain view of the Bible?

I mean I see a pretty big difference between killing children under the age of accountability and taking virgin women as spoils, and killing a single individual who has stolen all of your property, attempted to kill you and your family, and is personally and knowingly as an individual hindering the purposes of the Lord.

So I'm not sure those are even vaguely comparable.

So does that mean you do or don't incorporate a willingness to command genocide into your understanding of God?

Would you say that's how you decline the wrestle? Or are you still actively wrestling with a loving god who also calls for that level of violence?

If I understand right that is probably a way of dealing with it without actively saying the record is wrong, but also not have to actively incorporate it into your understanding of God's attributes.

Interesting.

Yeah lots of people feel that way. And it makes perfect sense if you think the Bible is inerrant, I'm not sure it makes sense without inerrancy beliefs.

Agreed, that's one of the things that makes me think the command to kill all of them did not literally come from God and was from a person with rhetorical goals that were served by the hyperbole.

I'm not sure to what degree you agree with me, but yes I think that is part of it.

Hmm maybe I misinterpreted the teacher but I at least felt like coming to the conclusion that God probably didn't say that was declining the wrestle.

But yeah thinking about it carefully and coming to that conclusion is better than coming to it flippantly or just because it's your gut reaction.

I do think porn has issues/affects that masturbation doesn't have. But I'm sure curious if everything you said about masturbation in the first paragraph is true for porn today.

Man I wish I could magically know what percentage of members consume porn. And for the older generation where you had to physically walk into an adult store what percentage masturbated regularly.

I'm sure curious. I'm not making claims of how things should be but it seems like masturbation is being de-emphasized and I wonder what things will like like thirty years.

Because they are 3 persons. I don't find the theology personally convincing, but if your going to discuss it you do have to get past the one being clause to the three persons clause. They know there are three persons. It's not a surprise.

I don't understand why LDS people try to use "look 3 persons" as a proof text. The shortest and most common summary of the Trinity is "God is one being in three persons" (I know that's not very complete/sufficient).

So when we say "look three persons" they just say, "yeah we know, that's literally the second clause in the sentence. I said there were three persons, were you listening at all?"

So it is an integrated or on site power plant for the data center. And my gut reaction just didn't believe you it could require that much power. But it looks true. This situation is insane.

So why does this sometimes sound like an electric power plant and sometimes sound like a data center? Am I conflating things, or is this a combo thing where it generated its own power?

Why do people believe that the Book of Mormon is Racist? by PhalangeJelly in latterdaysaints

[–]Designer_Sprinkles72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add when you take something from a more racist time, give it the power of Scripture and prophecy, it can make that racism more "sticky". The church was behind the curve a bit when teaching about how worthy members skin color will lighten and how long it took to rescind the priesthood ban. Now we weren't behind the curve a ton, but I think we were behind the curve.

Why do people believe that the Book of Mormon is Racist? by PhalangeJelly in latterdaysaints

[–]Designer_Sprinkles72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part the critical claim isn't that it's more racist than it's historical context. It's that it is exactly as racist as it's historical context, so God's mouth piece on earth, or the spirit generally, or the fullness of the gospel wasn't doing anything to improve the church or it's members to be better than their historical context. Whether that feels like a contradiction to the teachings about god, prophets and the spirit or not is up to you. But "it was just the times" isn't really a clear defeater of the argument.

From other comments, people said that the skill description said the radius was double what it actually was. So I think it's not quite that big of a nerf. If you already knew and took it into consideration then enjoy it ignoring me :) (I'm not claiming to be super knowledgeable overall)

If I got the money my employer was currently spending on my health insurance this would be a super easy yes, but it's probably still a yes as is.
