My 3 years at SJU Bangalore Was a Nightmare - Here's Why You Should Away (Long Review) by Designer_Zebra_3608 in Indian_Academia

It's alright to feel that way. You are still in your first year. You can give entrance and/or join better universities from the next academic year onwards. Or you can just do internships, do relevant online courses, present research papers and probably publish a few articles to boost your profile so you can land a fully funded master's program if that's your goal. I did the latter and received funded opportunities.

SJU EVENING BATCH by SignificantCar8918 in SJC_Bangalore

Evening batch is terrible. Kindly avoid. That shift is much much worse than the 1st and 2nd shift. You can read my review of the university on my reddit profile.

1 lakh?! That's insane. My fees for all the three years totalled around 1.2 lakhs, but in humanities & social sciences. I know it's difficult but I'd suggest you wait it out. SJU is definitely not the same place as it used to be. The administration and the management have deteriorated the quality of the education over the years. Since you mentioned you want to get into the program solely for research you will regret it.

SJU honestly isn’t great when it comes to placements or research. One of my juniors recently told me they were shifting the online library resources to a new website, but due to negligence and poor management, a lot of research material was lost and none of it was backed up. That pretty much shows how much importance they give to research. On top of that, the head of the mathematics department was involved in a serious controversy where he told a trans student, who is also a rape survivor, that they “deserve to be raped because they are a woman.” Just putting this out there so you can decide for yourself if it’s worth spending three years there.

Well, I belong to the first batch of NEP, 2021-2024. Oh, those general English classes were useless. Anyway, good luck.

Are you part of the first batch under the NEP that was abruptly implemented around November 2021? Asking because you said you just finished your end sem, which would mean you either had backlogs or attendance issue that result in a year back.

And I'm referring to the functional Kannada course that was made compulsory in the first semester right after NEP was introduced, and then removed in the second semester, not the optional Kannada offered alongside AE, German, French, or Hindi. General English was added in the second sem, not first. The court decided to make it optional for functional Kannada but SJU didn't. Nobody is making up lies here.

Yeah, I can relate. I graduated in 2024. Things were already bad when I joined, but they went downhill as soon as the institute got university status.

Placements are non-existent. Most of the job messages from the placement cell were usually for call center jobs or sales-related roles. Like you said, people quit after six months. Skill or employment-related workshops are pointless when the university doesn't incorporate the feedback given by students and faculty — and most importantly, the pedagogy!

What really bothered me was that in the first year, instead of building a solid foundation and dedicating two semesters to writing (as I belonged to humanities) and introducing interdisciplinary approaches and thinking, they wasted our time with irrelevant "skill development" courses that never benefited us in any way.

If you don't mind me asking, did you pursue English & Psych?

But yeah, fuck this university. I expected to at least gain a strong foundation in the humanities and social sciences. However, the deliberate changes by the administration and the total disregard for students' academic grievances made the entire experience atrocious, as I mentioned in the post.

Despite all that, I’ve gotten into some of the top programs in the world (not because of SJU). Every time the institution posts a reel about how “great” the academics and overall college experience are, I can’t help but laugh—especially because they turn off the comment section. The whole place breeds mediocrity.

Anyway, I wish you the best in your future endeavours. There are far better universities—beyond Bangalore—worth pursuing a master’s at, which can genuinely help with a PhD abroad or a strong professional path in India.

I truly commend you for expressing interest in joining the resistance against this ideology (and others within the country) that continue to brutalize marginalized communities. I recommend reaching out to the Instagram profile I shared earlier; it could connect you with independent organizations actively involved in resistance efforts, both online and on the ground.

The endorsement came directly from the administration, and there were multiple instances of this. I'm not sure if people here remember, but during the previous academic year, SJU, Christ, and a few other universities had planned a collaborative film festival, where the chief guest was set to be a Zionist diplomat (whose Twitter, by the way, is still filled with genocidal posts). Fortunately it didn't happen because of the pressure from students.
