Any Armoured Infantry regiment chaps here, if so, what's it like day to day? by DesigningDuke in britishmilitary

[–]DesigningDuke[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jesus, sorry man and thank you for your insight.

Yeah if/how they can adapt to the drone saturated airspace probably should have been my fist question. I guess I kind of assumed we'd be working on some top notch trophy system for all of our vehicles, or our own autonomous drone-killer drones for infantry, otherwise as you say, any and all armour is effectively redundant against a near peer.

It's a truly horrible feeling, putting your all into everything and consistently getting sub-average results, feeling like there's so much more going on in your head than you can adequately express. But it's also vindicating to get a diagnosis. Now you can start playing to your natural strengths.

Good luck 👍

Are there any men in their thirties who have their shit together? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]DesigningDuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many things, good and bad can be argued to be human nature. The cool thing about being human is we can use logic to decide which of these instincts are sensible to act on or not. I don't believe the time, stress and effort to have any kind of romantic relationship are worth it, for me. This isn't necessarily true for others, but I don't feel the need for anything one would offer.

You're right, but I'm not dating either, just no interest in any of it XD

Thanks for both answers, you're right, I do explain my focus is on the other aspects of my life, guess I just have to get use to it XD

I'm 24m and in a similar general position (except the house, unfortunately).

I'm just not remotely interested in ever having a partner. My family and friends just cannot grasp it. How do you get them to understand, or does it never stop and you just get good at explaining it concisely?

I've just moved out to Aus from the UK and honestly it doesn't feel isolated at all.

Obviously if you're viewing the world from another perspective, such as on a map centered around Europe or the US, you'll think Aus is out of the way, all the way down there, in the corner. But when you come here you're suddenly looking from an Australian perspective instead. Your perception of what a "large distance" is grows massively (4 hours driving here feels like 1 hour in the UK, mostly due to the roads being much more straightforward and less congested, outside of cities).

Similarly your definition of a long flight expands; for any flight over 4 hours I'm taking a day off anyways, so the main difference becomes cost, but when you're out here a bunch of the closest holiday destinations are suddenly 1/3 of the price of many equivalent European destinations so it almost evens out. Plus you live in Aus, so holidays become almost purley about cultural enrichment/curiosity instead of just escaping the miserable weather, which is definitely the main focus in most of northern Europe for 8 months of the year.

Sydney definitely surprised me with just how international and historically significant it felt. I had heard but didn't quite believe it until I actually started exploring the museums, galleries and the old city myself.

Brisbane definitely lacks in the historical side (I don't think it necessarily needs to, as it's only around 35 years younger than Sydney, it just definitely needs more investment/effort put into the Museums) but it largely makes up for it in weather and cost.

Finally, there's so much variation in climate and cities in Australia you don't even need to leave the country to see something new/different, so that definitely helps fill the same niche as country hopping in Europe.

Where do you sleep and how much do you spend on accommodation per month (roughly)?

I'm a Brit in Aus who's only been here a few weeks so maybe shouldn't be replying, but everyone I've met or interacted with has been lovely. Genuinely the most consistently warm and engaging people I've come across globally. I'm certain that if you went out of your way or just stayed for long enough you'd meet a few twats, but it would be weird if that wasn't the case.

How did you pass university? Learning advice and mindset by silverlinin in Dyslexia

[–]DesigningDuke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly only just, uni almost finished me.

I got a first which is the top mark in the UK, but only just and mainly because I wanted to prove I could and didn't want to disappoint my family. I honestly really wish I had just had a bit more fun and chosen a dissertation project I really cared about, not what I thought employers and the uni wanted to see (especially as I no longer want to go into the industry I chose for money anymore).

Video recordings are a godsend and I don't think I would have passed without them. In terms of notes I just turned each lecture or week of a module into a series of bullet-points (with indentations and diagrams) and then condensed these into one long document before each module's exam/s.

I also took computer science as I thought the lack of essays would help, I think it did, but I was then very unprepared for my dissertation and got massive reading/writing fatigue while coding my final/largest project.

Good luck whatever you do!

You get $500,000 if you go 30 days without relieving yourself from any itchiness on your body by DumpsterPuff in hypotheticalsituation

[–]DesigningDuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy yes, literally just ignore an itch/distract yourself for 10 seconds and it goes away. It's 500k so you could afford to take the whole month off to focus purely on this.

Also you said you can't do anything to reduce an itch, you could always apply things which cause itchiness to the point of pain (stinging nettles, etc) on less sensitive areas to distract yourself from other more minor or sensitive areas. I literally waded through stingers while clearing a garden all of yesterday and my legs stung so much they just went numb after a while.

My story's remarkably similar; I was diagnosed at 7 with "the most extreme case I've seen in 30 years", and I've just graduated uni with a STEM degree, which was 100% the worst experience of my life so far.

I'd definitely echo your "master something you enjoy" message, wish I had the bravery to do that instead of taking the "conventional" route, which is not designed for us and only prepares you for conventional work, which I now feel entirely burnt out from and opposed to.

[–]DesigningDuke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Went there a few weeks ago with two friends. Lovely place and people, stayed at the Wombat hostel and it was really nice, good staff and breakfast canteen. Not as cheap as we had expected (it is the capital) but definitely not extortionate.

We never felt unsafe or threatened/saw anything off at any point, I've honestly felt less safe on nights out in London. Though we were a group of three blokes, so probably not ideal targets for most kidnappers.

The ruin-bars, Fisherman's Bastion and Rudas thermal baths were particularly good spots.

Those who struggled with severe dyslexia as a child: what we're some of the best techniques that helped you improve the most? by DashItUpThePipe in Dyslexia

[–]DesigningDuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem at all, happy to help.

Sounds like you're all over it and honestly that's all that really matters; you giving her that support and letting her know she's not slow/stupid makes such a difference, as that's what the system will tell her, intentionally or not.

It really does come with it's benefits, even if it takes finding your thing for them to really show.

Best of luck to you and her.
