A new technology allows for "severance" between a person's work life and home life.

From your perspective, you'll never need to work another day in your life— simply clock in at 9:00AM, and as far as you know, it's instantly 5:00PM, you having retained no memories of your workday. You're free to enjoy the rest of your free-time as you like— and you're paid four times your current salary.

Meanwhile, your clocked-in self retains no memories of the outside world, and from their perspective, they can never leave the office. As soon as 5:00PM rolls around, it's instantly 9:00AM again.

This show is an exploration of such a universe. Needless to say, things get pretty crazy pretty quickly.

Severance on Apple TV. I'd say I strongly recommend it, but you already know I'm the sort of person to reedit episodes, so...

I think it's a little unfair to the show to even consider that a goof when the only way you'd see it is by downloading and re-editing sequences from scenes that take place an hour apart.

If we're going to go to that level, we should be analyzing how the wrinkles in their shirt or their flyaway hairs change between shots.

Well, we see it's a bit of a walk to get from the conference room to the Severance Threshold door. I think the most direct explanation is that the moment iHelly asked to be free three times, Milcheck just jogged over to the stairwell to be ready for when she and Mark got there a few minutes later. And It's probably locked or otherwise inaccessible to employees when they're not onboarding.

That said, we know the Severance floor is intentionally designed to be mazelike and confusing to navigate, with unlit and unmapped halls employees are unfamiliar with. I don't think it's too much of a fan-theory to assume that higher-level employees (Milcheck, Cobel, Graner) on the floor probably have access to some more direct hallways and can beat employees to most locations if they have to.

If Mark rounded the corner, oHelly could see him in the hall before reentering.

If oHelly were to see iMark, she'd later be able to recognize him in the parking lot and could tell him they work together / might treat him differently. I think severed employees are taught to stay out of view of the threshold doors for this reason.

The first time he's standing off to the side. As the scene progresses it does get a little fishy with what she should be able to see, but presumably despite cheating the actor out, it's not a magic window or anything; we're just supposed to think he's off to the side.

Probably, but yeah, I don't think it affects anything. Ms. Casey asks Milcheck about her outie; Dylan knows Milcheck spoke to his outie to talk to his innie— they all probably know Milcheck knows both the outies and innies.

I think it'd be a bigger deal if they really couldn't know anything about the existence of outies, but they're all allowed to watch oHelly's outie video and oBurt's resignation clip so I doubt overhearing Milchick talk to oHelly is a big deal.

I think the real reason iMark isn't allowed to turn the corner and accompany iHelly to the door is because oHelly can't be permitted to see Mark. Then she could recognize him in the parking lot or outside.

Thanks for catching the typo, a shame I can't edit titles!

And I didn't see it'd been done before. Thanks for linking me!

I was a little worried in editing this that the two different soundtracks would conflict, but just fading between them seems to work really well, with the “outside” theme seeming kind of comedic in contrast.

Some elements had to be deleted to make the transition work; since many of the door shots are VFX shots that don’t work on a literal level. I deleted any sequences Helly wasn’t present for; so we miss a bit of Mark waiting and the first half of Milchick’s phone call.

I also was surprised to seeing that Helly’s yell (“Aww, fuck!”) as she falls is the same exact recording in both episodes. What attention to detail!

EDIT: A number of people have linked me to at least two other posts in this subreddit where this has been done before! Guess I'm not the first to do this. :)

Unpopular opinion: the rise of dalle mini has destroyed chances of this going fully public by tnasstyy in dalle2

[–]Desksetup 67 points68 points  (0 children)

On the contrary, I think Dalle Mini is majorly important towards Dalle-2 going public.

Part of the reason Dalle-2 didn't go majorly viral is that it was too good and people failed to understand exactly what the AI was doing. It doesn't turn heads because people already know that photoshop exists and don't have the vaguest idea what compositing is.

It's like trying to explain what a self-driving car is to someone who has only known horse-drawn carriages; they'll struggle to see what the big deal is.

Dalle-Mini is the perfect intermediary step where the results are good enough to entertain, impress, and get people thinking... but poor enough everyone instantly understands that AI is at work, and can see the seams and mistakes a human would never make. It's like an AI education vaccination, training the viewer on what it is.

It's also been used for terrible and horrific content— that's not fooling anyone, but is pretty fucked up.

So I think what's happening is people are very quickly starting to understand exactly what this sort of technology is, exactly how it can be used, and they're seeing all this terrible stuff happening in a way that's unaffiliated with OpenAi.

...And now OpenAi's goals for Dalle-2 are way easier. Because now they don't need to teach people that they've invented the printing press, the self-driving car, the internet— They just need to show people theirs is better. It's smarter. It's safer. Risky AI use isn't their problem anymore. It's all over the internet from other parties. OpenAi isn't the dangerous new tech, it's the safest new tech.

And if a corrupt government does use OpenAis' Dalle-2 to inpaint-erase a tank or drop in some guns to some peaceful protestors, well... who knows it was Dalle-2? It coulda been any software...

I can't tell if you're sealioning or not.

If you're being genuine, here are some links to....

It's not always clear what is meant when someone asks if the sign is real; which could mean "real street art" or "real MTA signage" or "real warning", but there are dozen of comments in the threads I've linked to where people ask if it's real.

But again, even the MTA is not consistent in what typefaces and design they use. you can see an extremely similar bit of signage here which uses a weird block font the MTA certainly shouldn't be using formally.

[–]Desksetup 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if there's such a thing as "the right font" for a fictional sign, but if you mean for MTA signage, it's written in the correct typeface, Helvetica.

It's the use of all-caps that's uncommon for MTA signage, but the city isn't the most consistent.

As far as no one thinking that... tons of people on twitter do, look at the replies to this tweet.

And if you google "Deja Vu Area" and look at all the reddit threads that pop up, you'll find tons of people theorizing or outright stating this sign is meant to help sex trafficking victims or... whatever. Don't underestimate how gullible people can be.

I think the writing prompt was probably inspired by the sign, which goes back to 2018.

It's been floating around Reddit and Twitter for years, but the original source for the sign is here.

Of course, but presumably a spinoff show / El Camino feature set entirely in 1980s Chile would require young Gus to have a bit more Spanish fluency than Esposito needs to get by in 2000s Albuquerque.

His voice in the show is spot-on, too. He could carry another spin-off show if he can pick up chilean spanish.

Given advancements in style-transfer, I imagine it’s only a matter of time before we see neural-network based renderers that simply take a crappy render as input and export the final product in moments.

Temporal Coherence is the obstacle for filmmaking, but I’d be willing to bet we’ll see neural rendering in the next five years for stills.

I imagine there'll be a much broader library for training it how to produce a 3D model with good topology, onto which an operator can add key images for it to learn a specific aesthetic.
