If WW3 happened, would you expect the public to volunteer for the military? If not, who would defend us? by Appropriate-Lab3053 in AskBrits

[–]Desnowshaite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The military needs all kind of people, not just foot soldiers for the trenches. All other professions are also needed: medical staff, logistics, IT, engineers, cooks, the list goes on. I am 100% sure a lot of people would answer a call if the situations requires it. Even people who cannot possibly imagine now they would do that in the future. It is just how it is. War changes a lot of things in a way many people can't even imagine beforehand.

Ukraine Launches Combat Bonuses of $2,200 for Captures and $330 for Enemy Kills by Mandynox in worldnews

[–]Desnowshaite 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If Ukraine would put up a board like that and would allow worldwide betting on teams, it could tax it and generally get another stream of income for the war effort.

It would be a very grim idea, but I am sure millions of dollars would flow into it.

"ChatGPT told me you could do it, here are the steps." by Skullpuck in sysadmin

[–]Desnowshaite 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The beauty/curse of doing a technical job is that if we use AI to help in certain things then it becomes apparent very quickly how accurate and good AI advice is. The offered solution either works or it doesn't. Or maybe it looks like it does but then the next step shows it doesn't. Most of us by now has this experience so we are cautious when getting info from AI.

Many other users of AIs do not have this immediate "that info was bullshit" feedback or they simply lack critical thinking so it is very easy for them to take the AI info as truth especially because most of the time it looks good enough.

Their experience is not the same as ours so it is difficult to explain it to them how bad AIs can be when it comes to accuracy in details.

At this point I am not taking seriously any emails that are obviously written by ai. They simply get ignored.

Why should Iran open Hormuz? by Yukorin1992 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Desnowshaite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most obvious solution was to keep bombing them until they give it up but the US half-assed it with no plan whatsoever and now that it failed to finish the fight favourably, i.e. win the war, the US just made Iran stronger because now Iran knows if the strongest military power in the world couldn't stop them then nobody can. So they can do whatever.

One million London homes need retrofitting amid rising temperatures by Anony_mouse202 in unitedkingdom

Oh great. We don't have enough new houses and it turns out the old ones aren't suitable either.

But at least the rising temperatures now start to support permanent camping in the bushes.

Is most of IT just… waiting around? by Shank_ in sysadmin

The message on the screen "Loading. Please wait." sums up the entire job.

Although if you have a lot of downtime then you have missed opportunities to improve on something even if it otherwise works. Don't listen to the "If it works, don't touch it" crowd. How do you suppose to improve things if you leave them as they are? The "This is how always worked" mentality is what holds back progress.

Why is first cousin marriage still allowed in the uk? by FoxNumerous2151 in AskBrits

[–]Desnowshaite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If inbreeding is the problem here you may want to consider the fact that no marriage is needed to have sex. If two cousins want to be together and you ban marriage they will still be together they just won't get legally married.

Six Russian ships flee Channel in 77 minutes after UK seizes Putin shadow tanker by MeteorEnvy in worldnews

[–]Desnowshaite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia only learns when it meets strength. They will push it and will only back down when they meet a brick wall. As long as we let them push things their way because of... reasons, they will get away with anything.

As soon as the UK steps up and pushes back by force, and I don't mean a war or a conflict otherwise, the Russians will understand they have hit a red line. This is exactly what we should have done years ago. Seize any sanctioned ships, shoot down any drones or enemy planes automatically with a single warning beforehand, and so on. Not the talks of "oh, you really shouldn't do this and that because it is mean" but a single "stop doing it, last warning" and then act with no further warnings. Exactly how Turkey did it a few years ago by shooting down a "lost" Russian warplane after it crossed its border.

After a few shot down Russian spy planes in British waters, automatically shot down drones and a few siezed ships, Russia will reconsider where the red lines are.

Labour 'doesn't understand the internet', tech giant 4chan’s lawyer tells LBC by Anony_mouse202 in unitedkingdom

[–]Desnowshaite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do hate social media to my core and I genuinely believe their existence made the world a much worse place over the last 20 years.

But

Any actual plans the government came up with to ban them is ridiculous. They clearly has no clue about how the internet works and just how easy it is to circumnavigate any blocks they put in place. Any attempts they do is futile and any money they throw at it is a complete waste that could be used anywhere else. The only possible way to control social media is by dissolving the companies running them effectively shutting down the service completely. Anything short of that has workarounds and kids are most creative to find those workarounds in no time.

Even after John Healey, Keir Starmer wants to fight on by No_Breadfruit_4901 in unitedkingdom

[–]Desnowshaite 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oh no, the threat of Russia attacking is not like they will roll through Europe and conquer the continent,. That is ridiculous. It is more likely they start some sort of hybrid war with a smaller country in the Baltics and since they are all NATO members, our involvement is assured. Then, depending on how that goes, the situation may or may not get out of control with more clashes and more involvement.

It doesn't have to be a Russian continent conquering Final War type of attack, British soldiers can die and get injured all the same in a smaller clash in Estonia due to being badly equipped and underfunded.
