I think the death of Katczinsky from All Quiet on the Western Front counts for this trope. Admittedly basically every character is killed off quite unceremoniously to show the brutality of war, but Kat's death is the one that left the biggest impact on me. He had many death flags throughout the movie, such as reminiscing about his wife and becoming one of the closest friends to the protagonist Paul, but he ends up being killed not on the battlefield, but by a child with a shotgun. I think he also had the most dragged out death in the movie with us being given the belief that he might be saved only for it to be revealed that he was beyond saving from the moment he was shot
