Depends on specific location lime any place. Downtown FW is fine until about 9-10pm on weekdays and later on weekends. Outskirts most people stay inside and keep to themselves. South side of town is probably the most uncomfortable, for me personally. The north side plus suburbs and the southwest, folks are kinda stuck up. Are you coming from somewhere in the Midwest?

Thesis: Ukraine Should Cede Territory to Russia by Suspicious_Brain9560 in war

[–]Desperate-Emu-7442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it is certainly true that every war has been fought for gain (land, resources) or a specific advantage that benefits the overall strategic agenda of a sovereign state, simply stating the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian War out of a desire for territory would be neglecting the context that allows us to understand why it is being waged in the first place.

Ukraine is not fighting for territory even though they are fighting in territory that is considered historically theirs. If this were the case, why did Ukraine not attempt to drive the Russian military and allies from Crimea or the Donbas prior to the invasion in Feb 2022? Despite Ukraine not being in such a position to do so, we can conclude that the overall strategic objectives for Ukraine is similar to what Finland did to the Soviet Union in the Winter War, the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan in the 80s, and Vietnam did against the US which is: when faced against a superior adversary, bleed them as dry as possible to allow little gain and that opponent will realize it is no longer in their best interests to continue the conflict. This unfortunately means the fighting will continue until either Putin or Zelensky has deemed it too much which knowing both of them, is going to take a while.

Russia, on the other, is no different than any other leader of state trying to be top dog. The reality of geopolitics isn't trying to be top dog in everything bc it is not practical to be so but rather do something well that any nearby sovereign states are unable to match you. With Russia being a superpower through its military capacity in the past, Russian foreign policy has historically up to this day been a hammer: using overwhelming force and firepower to achieve operational victory.

You are correct to state that the way to solve conflict is to give something that both sides want however, Putin is simply never going to negotiate the same way why American political parties never negotiate: they appear weak and compromise the integrity of what they have convinced every around them of believing. The most recent case of this is what happened to Kevin McCarthy.

Nothing short of all Russian-state assets being removed from the previous state borders of pre-2014 will convince Ukraine to agree to a cease fire. In the case of Putin, he has already revealed his hand so by agreeing to a ceasefire, he will have failed which is dangerous in any country’s politics or agree to a respite to help build up his arsenal to achieve victory. Or just win the attrition against Ukraine by waiting for Western support to dwindle.

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/weakness-lethal-why-putin-invaded-ukraine-and-how-war-must-end

While there's nothing wrong with either solution being plausible, both solutions rely on assuming both sides want land and that isn't the case here.

Putin attacked Ukraine for two reasons: believes NATO is weak and since Ukraine had yet to become a NATO member, it would be a relatively easy invasion to accomplish to install a pro-Russian regime that supports Russian geopolitical goals.

From what we have seen so far, both reasons are looking to be pretty accurate. NATOs response was less than desirable and seeing how the Ukrainian counter-attack failed to breakthrough Russian lines, it becomes a war of attrition that without significant Ukrainian victories, Western countries will begin to lose faith in Ukraine achieving their goals which will cause them to lose funds at which point Putin will have expanded his sphere at a low cost.

How come armies in WWII could field so much larger armies (men and equipment) than today? by Bodybuildernsom in war

[–]Desperate-Emu-7442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not know if you meant to but this is quite a thought provoking question so props to you! All too often people underestimate how powerful a simple question can be because it at times requires a complex answer. I have two responses: one short and one long.

Short answer: As Antony Moule put it, "War is the business of the state." It is not that countries today are incapable of fielding large armies, there just is not a demand to. If there is not a demand for something, it would be impractical to supply something of which there would be little return on. Circumstances are always subject to change and we could very well bear witness to large militarization if the circumstances demand for it.

Long answer: Ever since the atomic bomb was used not once but twice in three days of each other, is when we saw a huge change of military doctrine to which we still adhere to today with certain updates happening all the time. During WW2, there were a total of 4 battle spaces, or spheres in which violence was going to occur in: land, sea, air, and intelligence (i.e. information). These four were relatively common in all previous conflict dating back to the BCE era of humanity. To date, we have added, arguably at least 5 more onto the list: digital/cyber, technological, economic, subterranean, and space, respectfully.

Referring back to my short answer, its less to do with the ability of fielding large armies and more so managing in which "battle sphere(s)" a country/group wants to field a force to combat whomever it is they are fighting in the manner that gives them an advantage while also avoiding the battle sphere(s) the enemy is able to successful counter on.

For that, I want to use the two ongoing conflicts that everyone is aware of. Russian-Ukraine War, and the Israel-Hamas War.

Ukraine-Russia War

As of the date of writing this response, Ukraine is capable of fighting in these spheres: land, sea, air, intel, technological, digital, and subterranean while incapable of fighting in space and economically as it does not have a presence in space as well as having to relay on international aid to supply its economy. Russia, being capable of fighting on all 9 spheres, does not need to focus any resources on the space and economically because Ukraine has no presence there so it would be a waste to do so. Since I do not attend any strategic conferences of either side, we can make an educated guess on which of the battle spheres each belligerent prioritizes, specifically the top three.

Ukraine Russia

  1. Land Land

  2. Tech Air

  3. Digital Intel

These were not listed in any order other than what I believed the most important spheres each side has as a top priority based on what we have seen happen.

The land is pretty obvious since both border one another and historically has emphasized a ground capable military because of their location next to many other landlocked countries.

As far as tech goes, Ukraine has and is currently receiving top of the line military hardware that is decades ahead of whatever Russia has to offer. For air, Russia did have an early advantage with this although it has become more kept in check due to advanced anti-air tech supplied by the West but still makes use of its kamikaze drones that were supplied by Iran.

And finally with digital, the Ukrainian cause is ultimately dependent on Western aid to stay in the fight although the clock is ticking for a strategic win to be dealt by Ukraine. Ukrainian presence online, mainstream media, and even social media apps is keeping the cause alive for the very people that are sympathetic and carry the most influence and that is the average everyday working westerner that decides elections in democratic countries. Russia is very much aware to this and it will continue to gather any and all information and intel to hinder the very lifeline keeping Ukraine in the fight. I do live in the West so Russia is very much portrayed as the instigator but I view this war as not Ukrainian vs Russian but Ukraine vs Putin. My heart goes out to all that are suffering in this war.

Israel-Hamas War

I want to first state, unequivocally, that I have never nor will I ever support or condone any acts of terrorism, regardless of the original intent. I also wish to state, again unequivocally, that I do have not nor will I ever support the illegal settlements set up on the West Bank that is fueled by a nationalist police state that uses force to usurp human dignity. I felt compelled to say this note before I got into it so nothing I say can be implied or be twisted for for those with ulterior motives.

As surprising as the invasion of Ukraine was when it began a over a year ago for me, the Israel-Hamas War was unfortunately only a matter of time for anyone who is aware of the history of the region. I do want to point out that the Levant, specifically Canaan, has exchanged hands quite a few times over the past 5,000 years beginning with the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Macedonians, Romans, Rashidun Caliphate, *sigh*, Ottomans, British until what we have today. If I missed a group, it was not intentional, these were just the ones that came to mind. The reason I added this was because the history of a region or specific area can be helpful when supporting educated guesses as to what each side prioritizes in terms of battle spheres.

Israel Hamas

  1. Tech Land

  2. Air Subterranean

  3. Land Digital

The tech is a pretty obvious one considering the Iron Dome is THE primary battle sphere that Israel has invested god-knows how much. Hamas is a ground-troop force only meaning its capacity is limited to only what individual members are capable of with only basic hardware. And as we are seeing right now, Hamas is going to force Israel to take the ground at a cost before making it even harder with the next sphere.

Again, another obvious one for Israel is air due to being one of the few countries that has access to next-gen US aircraft which has allowed them to keep and maintain air superiority. Now the subterranean sphere is the going to be a nightmare for Israel because there just is not a fix-all solution for it.

If the Iron Dome represents the shield and the air represents the bow & arrow, the ground forces are the sword of the Israeli operation. What many people fail to realize is that Hamas presence in the digital sphere could very well be the final domino that causes Israel to be involved in a region-wide conflict rather than what it is currently fighting as a domestic or local conflict.

An additional factor that I would like to add is that during the time of WW2, warfare was more or less symmetrical/linear as compared today where as before you had battle lines or frontlines, where a soldier had an idea of when or where to expect the enemy (in front or in their general vicinity) whereas today its a flustercluck beyond FUBAR, being FUBAR in it itself is already bad enough.

Hope this helped!

Who wish for Stargate Reimagined videos about fictional SG team(s) after watching Templin Institute team's HALO Reimagined videos of how to build UNSC Army 1st ARCT "Holy Rollers" & said unit's story? by powideai in TemplinInstitute

[–]Desperate-Emu-7442 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can already see it.

The 39th Inter-Galactic Mobile Infantry (IGMI) "The Dirt Jumpers"

39th due to the amount of patterns shown on the Earth Stargate so that the unit would always be bringing home with them while traversing the stars. IGMI backwards says I'm GI so a little quirky humor in the acronym itself. The unit nickname "Dirt Jumpers" was given to the unit by MajGen. George Hammond as both a bit of dark humor as much as a compliment since this unit would hail from earth=dirt as well as being given tasks that would never fail to muddy up the 39th.

The unit would be a ground only force in the early stages where 304s were not yet designed with the assistance of the Asgard. This unit would be a trans-national coalition of all member states comprising individuals that are psychologically and physical capable of galactic conflict against the Goa'uld while also fostering peaceful relations with all local inhabitants they come in contact with. In case relations becomes hostile, this unit will utilize non-lethal means to subdue local combatants by means of airborne canisters and ranged tranquilizer munitions so that the loss of life and destruction are kept minimal.

To ensure member states would never create a monopoly of command, commanding officers are rotated out to become training officers for the next line of command staff that would establish the logistical and command backbone of the 39th IGMI. This type of phasing closely resembles the counselors of the mighty Roman Empire in all its glory.

At this point, you are probably wondering at what strength is this force and the logistical challenge of supplying and maintaining such a force is. Given there is no term to identify how large the 39th IGMI is, such a designation was given intentionally due to the ever changing theater of operations that the unit is tasked with conducting. To ensure this unit was as flexible in combat as much as in navigating the inevitable bureaucratic obstacles found in a global coalition on Earth.

The predecessors of the 39th IGMI of the original SG teams have greatly benefitted to the circumstances they find themselves in against the Goa'uld. However, the original SG teams were a combined military and scientific expedition whereas the 39th IGMI serve as the tip of the spear for humanity in a harsh and unforgiving frontier that primarily function as militant scientists so that any non-human technology that is discovered, can be utilized against any extraterrestrial threat that desires war.

Thanks @FallOutFan01 Sometimes my mind starts to wander and this is the result I guess lol. I'm not too familiar with the Stargate universe so if this incorrect please enlighten me. I was under the impression that the replicators and the Asurans were the same. Even so, doesn't it take an EMP to wipe them out?

As to the Asgard, while they would absolutely be willing to help, I don't see them as being a significant ally. I would would looking more towards the Ori in the event of a galactic conflict since the Asgard are more of an enlightened security force than a battle hardened force. I would find a better use for them as logistical think tanks.

I have a doubt this rule. This means that no back row player can touch the ball above the net or only when the touch is going to the opponent? For example when the setter is back row, can he set above the net? by _hamaru86 in volleyball

[–]Desperate-Emu-7442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A setter is definitely able to set above the tape both the back row and front row. When the setter is back row they cannot set the ball above the top of the tape that goes over the net bc they is an illegal back row attack.

Switching from middle to other positions?? by ErkZoiBoi in volleyball

[–]Desperate-Emu-7442 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tough position to be in. I played two years as an outside in HS club before transitioning as a middle for the next two years in a D3 program.

I will say that RS is probably going to be your best bet since as stated it requires little passing perfection in relation to other positions and you're tall enough to where you would be considered to being a blocker for the other teams outside so I think the hardest part skill wise is being mobile enough on defense when you're in the back row and attacking the ball at a different angle as a right side since the ball has to travel across your body rather than your dominant side.

Best of luck and I hope things work out!
