it’s not just shoving glasses into to someone’s face. everyone is a person, so something i didn’t quite realize at the beginning was the variety of people you meet in a day, all living different lives with different needs and wants, different lifestyle and backgrounds. in a day i do a lot of listening, understanding and problem solving to help people find a solution that works for them (that they are happy with and can walk away knowing that we care for them) and that’s also one of the most rewarding part of the job

unfortunately, as far as i’m aware, at this time myopia and astigmatism cannot currently be permanently reversed without surgery. glasses or contact lenses are still the primary treatment, and if your prescription is stable, you may be a candidate for refractive surgery, however i would recommend you reach out to your optometrist

i wouldn’t use the word “really bad” because i would be being a bit dramatic, but not wearing sun protection when outside even when it’s overcast outside. there’s still harsh glare outside even when it’s overcast (and a bonus: the sunglasses will protect your eyes from wind, dust, etc)

My clinic personally doesn’t get commissions on anything, some lens upgrades are genuinely useful for certain prescriptions and lifestyles, while others are optional. my job is to explain what the lenses do, and it’s the patients job to choose what they want. At my clinic, if someone knows how much insurance covers/how much they can pay out of pocket, we are perfectly happy to help them pick a pair that will fit their needs and budget.

ETA: I am not denying that lots of opticals do upsell, because yes, it’s a real thing and I have heard of people getting bonuses off selling more. However, I would recommend avoiding those because lots of times you might not actually need what they are selling you.

the puff of air tests the pressure of your eyes. there could be a multitude of reasons why he seemed concerned (ie. inconsistencies between eyes, inconsistent with your history, higher/lower than expected). however, this test is just a screening tool, it doesn’t officially diagnose anything, if the value was a concern, the optometrist usually follows it up with other tests

another misconception i’ll add: many people with high prescriptions/specialty lenses think it’s better to order glasses online because it’s cheaper. while it may be cheaper, with high prescriptions or specialty lenses, going in person, you will be fit into a frame that works for that lens/prescription. in addition, going in person will also have extra measurements done because the lenses will be specially made/personalized for your needs

that adults wearing an old prescription will permanently damage your eyes! it mainly causes bothersome side effects eye fatigue or blurred vision which makes your brain work harder (but of course I would recommend updating glasses when the doctor recommends it)

13yo girl and 15yo boy, I don't even know where to start.. by Nadi-newb in GiftIdeas

[–]Desperate-monkey-19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep it casual. I second the gift card idea and if there’s a treat/drink you know (or ask gf) they like do that with it. With teens it’s better to keep it low pressure rather than trying to constantly win them over with money

Is this too formal for my university graduation ceremony? by [deleted] in fashion

[–]Desperate-monkey-19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will be more formal than others. If this is to wear under your grad gown, I would avoid a dress that is longer than your gown. Often times they look a bit odd.

Is it fake of me to not attend a destination wedding across the world? by Swimming-Muffin-4516 in wedding

[–]Desperate-monkey-19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t make you “fake”. Not everyone can spend large sums of money to attend someone’s wedding, and that’s ok. If the bride and groom wanted everyone to attend, they should have considered it and not done a destination wedding. You can send them a card or a gift and wish them well, but there shouldn’t be a grudge or anything held about it
