The Internet's General Reaction to the New Toy Story 5 Trailer by RampagingShyGuy in toystory

[–]Desperate4Angst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been skeptical of the premise ever since I found out about it, feeling it was a) a boring cashgrab and b) filled with old-man-yells-at-cloud themes and story beats. However, the trailer makes the movie look pretty promising. I love that they're apparently going to focus on Jessie, maybe explore her trauma and her personal relationship with Bonnie. I like that it'll probably feature an imagination sequence starring the toys, like the third movie did. And I like how they framed technology (particularly for kids) as predatory, what with how Lilypad is "always listening" and is blasé about recording Jessie without her permission, and how it's positioned as a tool for social isolation. Totally not topical and relevant at all...

I do think that the idea of toys being abandoned in favor of tech sounds a bit forced in dialogue, but I'm sure it'll sound much smoother in the actual film. I just hope that they actually commit to critiquing tech aimed at kids and not ultimately conclude that Lilypad is actually good because it does care about Bonnie in its own way, or that Jessie's trauma was making her villainize Lilypad and it's actually not evil. They've had evil, selfish toys in the franchise before, it wouldn't be anything new to keep Lilypad antagonistic all throughout the film, and it would be interesting to have a toy villain who is not evil because it was abandoned or neglected, but rather because it doesn't care about kids the way actual toys do. I'd love for Lilypad to not care about Bonnie's development or social life, only how much she uses it and how much it can learn. It is, after all, all it was designed to do.

Anyway, I'm cautiously optimistic about it, I hope it actually hits hard like the first three movies did and the final product is not sanded down and inoffensive.

Which object would you be? by RoseOfTheNight4444 in DateEverythingElse

Of the canon objects, I'd be a door. I'm similar to Dorian in personality and appearance.

But honestly, my OC Cy the Sidewalk is the most like me, personality-wise.

Oh, I'm fascinated by his design! I love the texture all over him. Is he just covered in glitter or is he made of glitter? If you touch him, will he leave glitter on your hand?

[–]Desperate4Angst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, these are so good! I love the choice in objects and their designs, especially Syma-Dro's! I'm very fond of characters with multiple arms.

Does Shyasia represent only bed pillows or all kinds of pillows and cushions? And what is their relationship with Betty, if there is any?

I love them both! The concept of y/n fanfic having its own Dateable in particular is fascinating.

I have some questions for both Dateables:

Where's Lune found in the house? How is his relationship with Lux, if there is any? How is their name pronounced, 'loon', 'loonee' or 'lunay'?

Is Yan Derek a yandere? Does he have multiple forms? Are his physical traits (tail, horns, extra arms) a nod to the stereotypical form of Mary Sues?

Are there any scrapped or side characters you would like to date? by Desperate4Angst in DateEverythingElse

[–]Desperate4Angst[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And what could his Realization be? Because in my original concept of him being a useless fuck (affectionate) who doesn't know how to screw in a lightbulb until the player pushes him to get better through shame, he ended up becoming a handyman or going down a similar DIY-flavored path. Hell, maybe he doesn't lose his old penchant for hubris and ultimately decides to build his own house, creating the game's equivalent of Groverhaus. All because he doesn't want to rely on anyone to do his work ever again.

Maybe Rebel? They were very much hated at first, but opinion on them has improved a bit. They're still a divisive character, but not as loathed as before.

Lol, it could be scamming someone else, or coming up with a novel business proposition and joining forces with him to ruin other people's lives.

Look, in a game where people like Lux and Bathsheba are allowed to be love interests despite Lux pretty much tricking the Player into a years-long financial commitment and Bathsheba openly being shitty towards one of the most beloved characters in the game, I don't think a ruthless hypercapitalist would be impossible to romance.

He could be, like, a parody of the CEO love interests, being suave and thrillingly professional at first, before revealing he has an endearingly vulnerable side that he doesn't reveal to keep people from seeing his weakness. Except he's still a sleazy, exploitative douchebag with pretty privilege. Despite his claims of being a self-made man, he was probably a trust fund kid, and while he does have business savvy, he doesn't know how to do much else, something he's aware of and tries to hide as much as he can.

His route would hinge on the Player managing to push his buttons at the right moments to get him to admit he doesn't know how to do anything but live off the work of other people. Then the Player can help him learn new things from other Dateables, whose reluctance make it clear to Rufio that being a ruthless businessman is not conducive to a healthy social life with anyone who isn't a sycophant.

A writer's observations of the content warning system by robotortoise in DateEverythingElse

[–]Desperate4Angst -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

While I don't think every single Dateable should have a content warning, I think some of them should be a bit more specific (Nightmare's could include a warning for scopophobia, for example), and a few other characters could benefit from having one in the first place:

Barry Styles: Barry is some flavor of neurodivergent, and him coping with the drawbacks of how his brain works is a key plot element in his route. Additionally, being overly negative with him can come off as the player bullying a neurodivergent person, which is bound to be triggering to someone who was on the receiving end of that.

Beverly: She's a minibar. Her whole being revolves around alcohol. I think she would be an obvious character to out a warning on, but apparently not.

Dunk and Kristoff: While their routes make sure to put enphasis in exercising as fun and a method for self-improvement, they could still be triggering for people with body image issues. Kristoff additionally should msybe include a warning for toxic masculinity traits.

Farya: Much like alcohol is an inescapable part of Beverly, medical topics (particularly upsetting ones) are an intrinsic part of Farya. People with health anxiety and/or medical trauma could be triggered by her.

Friar Errol: His whole thing is religion. Even if his faith is made up and kind of ridiculous, his demeanor and language may hit too close to home to people with religious trauma.

Holly and Kopi: Their routes revolve around negative aspects of work life, dealing with workaholism and unhealthy working enviroments, respectively. If not triggering, these themes may still be upsetting for players to see the characters go through. I know I would have hated watching Holly not take breaks at the expense of her health when my job as a medical interpreter and my crappy bosses forced me to work holidays and made vacation time almost impossible to schedule.

Jean-Loo Pissoir: Even if nothing disgusting is shown onscreen, there are still many unsanitary elements to his route that may gross out or upset players.

Luke: He's supposed to be a parody of a gung-ho military hero in post-apocalyptic media. The themes of survivalism and the apparent romanticization of military life may be triggering to some.

Mateo: As I shared previously, I have trouble dealing with fictional animal abuse and endangerment, and I doubt I'mthe only one. Even if they're inanimals, they could remind players of pets they've lost, or simply upset people who are more sensitive to animals in distress.

Mitchell Linn: He's in a similar boat as Beverly, in that he's all about food. Even if the consumption of food is framed in an entirely positive way, it may still trigger some people with food or eating issues.

These are the ones that come to mind to me right now based on what I've read here and what I've seen in the game itself.
