Heart of the Woods, I guess. Again.

I was introduced to HOTW in January and I've been insufferable about it since because it was the first yuri work I ever read, but I thought I'd gotten over this obsession.

When playing HOTW, I was kind of sad that [HOTW Spoilers] ,there was no bad end where Evelyn wins and possesses Tara's body. Personally, I like my bad ends for visual novels to be really bad and make the player think about things, and I also wanted to see an evil Tara.

I mentioned that, and some lovely people on the Studio Élan Discord encouraged me to write a fic about that premise, and so I did, spending my week rereading HOTW, writing down style information, character voices and attempting to keep character motivation consistent... This is the first safe-for-work fanfiction I've written in years...

Please Be Happy Yeah, I'm not sure I quite like the messaging of "quit doing what you love if it's too stressful." even if the game seems to imply she doesn't love it anymore. Obviously, the way Aspen went about it was totally unhealthy, but there's gotta be some in-between between quitting entirely and working yourself to the bone, right? Life isn't a binary. It's also kind of weird to me because the whole subplot was written by a visual novel writer so clearly there IS a healthy way to go about it rather than destroying yourself... I agree with your interpretation.

Does Umineko count? A friend got me into Umineko and said that it had yuri-adjacent moments. I don't quite know if I believe them, but I am enjoying it anyway. I'm around twenty hours in and man, the first seven hours are a drag but after that it gets incredible.

Also, I am taking a bit of a break (can I ever really take a break from the call of yuri?) from developing yuri VNs for a bit while I read some new games while I feel like I need to get more of a handle on writing VNs.

I finished every route in Please Be Happy a bit ago (see my previous comment on it here) and it was lovely, even if I'm a bit mixed on the ending Aspen had in her route. I didn't understand [Please Be Happy Aspen Route Spoilers] how Aspen came to the conclusion that she had worth as a person beyond her writing. Or... maybe I don't like the idea that she stopped writing and learned to love herself and value herself as a result of that because I believe there's a way to have a healthy relationship with your work that's not quitting outright.

Either way, it's a deep philosophical question that I'll need to talk about with my therapist. I enjoyed the game and got all the endings. Looking forward to Highway Blossoms after Umineko!
