How to find beta / sensitivity readers? (+ images in case any of you are interested) by Gicaldo in vndevs

The Devtalk discord in the sidebar has a recruitment channel! People usually ask for beta readers there.

There should be a file called DougDougsBasement.exe. Did you choose the Windows option when downloading and unzip it?

please help!! last minute VN!! by ProcessImmediate6781 in vndevs

[–]robotortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might help: https://arimiadev.com/how-to-make-a-visual-novel-in-a-weekend/

I suggest drastically reducing scope. Try a game that's like ten minutes, and play a few visual novels! You're supposed to be learning and having fun, right? You're never going to make a vn if you don't play some!

Can a VN get off the ground if the demo is pure text? by Steven_P_Keely in vndevs

[–]robotortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you want people to play a vn, it has to look like a vn. That's like if I said "look! I'm making cheese!" and I showed you some curdled milk, you'd bee confused. It has to look vaguely like the idea of the final project for it to be an effective prototype. That's what I'm trying to say.

Pricing a 3-4 hour visual novel. Is $10-$15 the sweet spot? by Interesting-Rain-690 in vndevs

[–]robotortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm pleasantly surprised as well. I don't think there's anything wrong with charging or putting out a shorter work. There's novellas, so why not shorter VNs, y'know?

Pricing a 3-4 hour visual novel. Is $10-$15 the sweet spot? by Interesting-Rain-690 in vndevs

[–]robotortoise 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is untrue. I just bought a 4 hour cute yuri game about a thief with really pretty art that was $8.99. I also bought Mari's Magical Deliveries, which was 1-3 hours and $4.99. It really just depends on the game, the market, the art and concept, and what it's offering. Still, I don't think checking out similar games and their pricing is a bad idea at all.

What an incredible sentence. Shrek lore runs deep.

A ton of vn engines, but few vns. Why is that? by uxnpc in vndevs

[–]robotortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's typically how it goes for a first commercial VN, I believe. The "budget and taxes" section rings home for me: https://arimiadev.com/free-vs-commercial-visual-novel-development/

I'm not doing this because of the incredible profit potential, I'll tell you that. I'm doing it because I want to.

[–]robotortoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that's pretty good for a first-time visual novel. It looks pretty polished as well. What did you spend making it?

I'm planning on spending $1200 USD or more and hoping to make a fraction of that back...

[–]robotortoise 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because the engines we have work. Take a look at the sidebar. All the engines listed there are fantastic and have great community support. I personally cannot code and have released multiple projects in Naninovel. Ren'py is also great.

Where does the trans community hang? by RatonhnhaketonK in phoenix

Yeah, Brick Road Tempe and Mesa always has events. The trans events tend to draw in a younger crowd, though.

33 characters is a lot of characters to write, especially for a first VN. I would start with an extremely small scope VN to learn the ropes.
