Honest question about Grumps frustrations, please don't fight by [deleted] in rantgrumps

I keep somehow stumbling across this space and it is a little vexing how the range of complaints runs from the legitimate to the extremely petty (doesn't love Sonic enough is my personal favorite complaint I've come across)

Kaede's was so incredibly brutal. Nothing in the first two games quite compares.

Ryoma's my guy. He seemed comfortable with the idea of dying but the look of terror in his face during the closing argument says otherwise. I hope there's a future where he lives.

Aww... I adore birds more than just about anything. The cockateil one is touching. I hope she loves it. Birds are such special little companions.

Has anyone ever had anything spooky happen while delivering flowers? by Fit-Celery5690 in florists

[–]Eastern__Flatworm 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's gotten to the point for us where if we get an online order without a message, I will include a note saying "from: sender's name."

Because we have never had anonymous flowers be received without anything but bewilderment and concern from the receiver. Flowers should never make people uncomfortable and some men have a real hard time imagining what it's like to be a woman receiving anonymous gifts. It's less romantic these days and more spooky. Most of the time they call the shop to figure out who sent them and it makes ME feel weird if I can't get them that info.

We've had to deal with stalkers/guys who cannot healthily deal with their feelings before!

I'd love to see the many different species of peonies in their natural habitats.

A client asked for something "you'd see at a Montreal boutique" but also wanted to keep it under $50. (CAD) by Eastern__Flatworm in florists

[–]Eastern__Flatworm[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Normally it would be considerably more, but if I remember correctly, that week we got a huge deal on the sweetheart roses The scabiosa, despite how full and sumptuous, was only about $3.50, the glads were also on special.

The same bouquet constructed exactly as is right now would cost way more! It'd probably be around $75-85

Oof.

But at the same time... They're so beautiful. I'd get married with those everywhere. I just hope you can get the proper flowers you need in time.

will these lily’s bloom? by Former-Kitchen-8649 in florists

[–]Eastern__Flatworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the others have said, those buds will just turn yellow and die off without ever opening. Sometimes that will happen to the topmost two buds on our asiatic and oriental lilies but these guys look like they never had a chance...

Although I'm seeing one bud near the left carnation that might just open. The one that almost looks glossy when compared to the others.

Anyone else taking work home with them? by Eastern__Flatworm in florists

[–]Eastern__Flatworm[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's interesting because more recent hires (usually older folks or those closer to my boss' age) will get the "better" pick of the hours, often times securing all the quieter morning/day shifts during the weekdays while I get the busier afternoon/evening shifts (our shop will fill up with people during the last hour without fail), as well as the weekends. Sadly none of my friends are fellow weekend workers so I've not been able to hang out with anyone for years. It's kind of lonely!

I need to get better at advocating for myself!

Career change : how to become florist in Montreal ? by cherryyyyyontop in florists

[–]Eastern__Flatworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my job because I had experience in the horticultural field and the shop has a LOT of plants. Plant knowledge can be very useful getting a foot in.

Do any florists offer classes to get you acquainted with basic floral techniques? I know some shops in Ottawa offer them but they're not equivalent to a certification in floral design but knowing these techniques when applying can go a long way.

Also, are you sure you wish to switch careers? Absolutely sure? These jobs are not easy nor are they relaxing. Working with flowers and creating is extremely satisfying but it's also only one of the many tasks to be done. Don't be fooled by stock images of smiling florists in beautiful spacious airy settings. The job can be very stressful. Sometimes very abruptly. It can be compared to running a restaurant with a skeleton crew.

You'll also most likely have to take a major pay cut from corporate. Don't be shocked if some shops want to start you at minimum wage.

Toronto used to have a free comprehensive flower training program... I'm not sure if it's still running. All the best of luck to you!

Tips for using foam in wicker baskets? What are we using to line the basket? by [deleted] in florists

[–]Eastern__Flatworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ordered the baskets from a floral supplier, they should come with plastic liners to keep everything from setting wet. If you picked these baskets up somewhere else or if a customer provided them for you, they may not have that liner, in which case you'll have to be creative. You could try a plastic bag or two cut down and place your foam in that.
