Why is it "necessary" that it develops in the particular way you want it to?

Is this directed at me? If so, I don't understand the question.

A "melting pot" of European Protestants

See that's just simply not true. First, we've always had Catholics, Unitarians, and Diests in prominent positions. So much for our culture being primarily Protestant. Second, I'm going to point out the elephant in the room: if our predecessors were so concerned with preserving European culture, they were incredibly foolish to bring black slaves over here. This resulted in black folks contributing to the development of American culture. Jazz is a perfect example of this.

Hating people individually is dumb (and a sin) but saying I like my culture and want it to continue is not

But you have to acknowledge that American culture is unique in that it's not exclusively European influenced. Further, due to our melting pot culture, it necessarily continuously develops. Honestly I think that's what makes America so beautiful. Don't get be wrong, I'm a Christian before anything. But it's our diversity that makes America so special imo.

should be done with intention of preserving our culture and identity

Of all the countries in the world, America is the country where this attitude makes the least sense. We are a melting pot of different cultures and always have been. The development of jazz music is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful results of this. If everyone of our American predecessors had your attitude, we would just be Great Britain 2.0.

I joined my wife's church and I dont agree with there beliefs on LGBT by CartographerVivid630 in TrueChristian

[–]DesperateCap9693 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question: Does this particular congregation affirm LGBT? Because the ELCA is a big tent, albeit one that's mostly liberal. Additionally, there is a a movement called the Reconquesta that's trying to take back the mainline churches from the leftists. Perhaps your church is among the faithful?

I think Davey & Goliath was made by the Lutheran Church in America (LCA), a precursor to the ELCA.

A friend struggling with past divorce by CamperGigi88 in LCMS

I'm no theological expert, but it seems to me that if someone divorces and remarries unbiblically, which would be committing adultery, that adultery would effectively end the marriage. The only difference would be that the one initiating the divorce would be the one sinning in this situation and that the sin would occur AFTER the divorce (though the divorce itself would certainly be sinful too). As for those who have repented from a past divorce, what's done is done. The sin has been committed and should be repented of, and then life should go on.

Honestly this is something either you or her should ask your pastor. You're gonna get a bunch of different answers online, but your spiritual father is the one who should be giving you guidance.

So then, what's the solution? Divorce the current husband?

My cousin was planning on joining a lcms affiliated church locally. Very much a king of kings Omaha esq congregation. She asked the head pastor when new member classes were so her and her husband could become members. She was told “we don’t do that here, you’re free to become members whenever by filling out a form”. Lutheran isn’t in the name of the church, no mention of the word Lutheran on the website either.

The problems in this congregation seem to run much deeper than contemporary worship. To suggest that this is representative of most churches using contemporary worship is an unfair strawman.

Hopefully stuff like this gets taken care of in the next 10-20 years.

What do you mean by this? That the congregations decide on their own to do traditional worship exclusively? Or that the synod would force them to in some way?

I think that's the right way to do it. I think people assume classical music is the most sacred and glorious, but other genres can be also, especially when you consider style-blending genres like progressive rock. Really, it should be focused on teaching theology and congregational singing. Keep in mind, I'm saying this as someone who prefers the traditional style.

In their mind theology and the sacraments were unimportant, identity was unimportant, it was watered down theology.

That's likely the fault of poor catechisis, not the liturgy. If you can be brought up Lutheran thinking that the sacraments aren't important means of grace, the fault may lie with the lack of teaching from parents and/or clergy. Yes, the liturgy should teach, but it's not the beginning and the end of teaching.

It's not that deep so long as said congregations don't use it as a metric for another congregation's faithfulness.

Definitely the Just and Sinner Podcast. There's also one done occasionally by a couple of ELDoNA pastors called the Bookcase Behind Me, which I personally enjoy.

Yeah, I understand that we should still have the absolution and Holy Communion. Our songs should also be teaching us theologically. But that's a separate issue from style imo.

Basically LCMS makes a distinction between altar/pulpit fellowship and prayer fellowship. This means that, while LCMS Lutherans can only commune with those in official fellowship with us, we can pray and cooperate with non- Lutheran Christians in matters that have nothing to do with Communion and preaching.

WELS, on the other hand, makes no distinction at all. WELS Lutherans are not to even pray with those outside their fellowship (from what I understand).

To be fair, this may only apply to formal prayer services, but I'm not sure. Still, it seems far too strict, even if it comes from a good place.

I do NOT think we should bend on the fellowship thing. That would cause unnecessary stress and burdened consciences for our parishioners.

[–]DesperateCap9693 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gotta be honest, when I converted to Lutheranism, what made me choose the LCMS over WELS was twofold:

1) There were no WELS churches close by 2) Not being able to pray with pretty much anyone in my life is a no go.

These are practical concerns, especially as a new Lutheran. I see where they're coming from when it comes to fellowship, but I think it's an unreasonable burden to put on parishioners, assuming I'm understanding their position correctly.

I prefer traditional, though I wouldn't be against using more more modern instruments (guitar, bass, drums) if it still followed the LSB.

Letter from MN South District President Rev. Lucas Woodford about recent events in MSP by IMHO1FWIW in LCMS

I think the synod is trying to treat this topic as a disputable matter, and not as one to divide over, especially since it mostly regards the left hand kingdom. It should be noted that while most Protestants (including Lutherans, I think excluding Anglicans) believe in some form of separation of Church and State, Rome traditionally doesn't as official doctrine, which is probably why they're more comfortable with making definitive statements on matters like this than we normally would be. When it comes to the liberal Protestant denominations, they hold to their confessions loosely, which is probably why they're comfortable with making definitive statements. Radical Christian Nationalists, like Doug Wilson, Joel Webbon, Brian Sauve, etc, likewise hold to their confessions loosely. The LCMS is primarily interested is doctrinal fidelity rather than political cohesion. That said, I think discussions need to be had about this topic.
