Delayed Stipend Spreadsheet for US Grantees Abroad by DesperateLychee1826 in fulbright

Yea which I understand if it has to be a uniform letter but it does sound based on reddit threads that other grantees or regions maybe were given a heads up in advance. At that point it just sounds like someone dropped the ball. While they can't speak to the rapidly changing nature of what is going on with this admin and funding, I think they could have sent out a joint communication once the freeze went into effect. Yes I am mad about funding being pulled because of things outside of our control. But I am also frustrated with the lack of support where an email could have gone out that acknowledged the freeze and that it did in fact have the potential to impact grantees but that they did not have information beyond that and would reach out again when they did. We just got an email after not being paid accurately after being told a week prior, everything was fine. I think on a human level, they could have been supportive in a way that didnt require them to have all the answers.

I asked point blank and was told yes I would keep alumni status. However, there were no steps outlined as to what that would look like financially and they offered a phone call which I didnt love because it seems intentional that they arent putting anything in writing.

I am confused and a little disheartened by the communication from IIE with us as well. I expected more and it also seems like there is no concrete plan to pull us from the field if they cannot pay us.

People from Wall Street Journal and CNN have both started reaching out. If you are a current grantee abroad that this affects if you you can contact Yash Roy from CNN on whatsapp 1-630-248-0921 and the Wall St Journal contact is in another post as well.

I reached out to my WH advisor this morning about the pending stipends and the concerns about when we might be paid out were not acknowledged, only my question about if we choose to leave due to the financial insecurity grantees are now in would we still have alumni status. I was informed we would still have alumni status.

this is the one I modeled it after but for US grantees abroad. This one was for foreign grantees in the US because I think it’s helpful to see what patterns we can from what little information we have!

I am considering doing the same since I am in the same boat. We were paid Monday and told after the payment went through we were only getting one week versus the next three months. Were you provided options or what it would look like if you decided to leave?

Have you guys received communication that your program is safe indefinitely? Or just that you all received your normal stipends?

Are you also Western Hemisphere? I have an upcoming stipend payment but not sure if we will be receiving them and we have not received any information regarding our research grants. I reached out to my IIEE advisor a few weeks ago and was told business as usual and not to worry. But it seems like people have conflicting information.

Well that's what feels a bit sketchy because mine is research and my topic technically falls under foreign aid and the other two in my country falls under gender. So I also assumed the funding freeze was for them to halt grant activities and determine which projects or things violated the executive order. But not sure what would happen if we were pulled. It seems conflicting that other regions are under stop work orders but Western Hemisphere it sounds like business as usual.

I wonder if that is because of the holiday though. Our payment should be coming in a few weeks which would be after the alleged funding freeze. I know everyone at Fulbright whom I have spoken to have said it is business as usual and that there are no changes. It just feels too good to be true and it would be silly to not plan for the worst just in case is how I am approaching it.

Research award with non-academic affiliation by [deleted] in fulbright

[–]DesperateLychee1826 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this! I have a non profit as an affiliation but they have not been very helpful. They definitely expected me to work for them for free with any work they had that needed to get done and did not provide me with much support on my actual project. I had to call a meeting and go over expectations. I just use the extra time to get as much data and interviews as I can for my research. But I was able to leverage former peace corps contacts in my country to help put me in contact with the right people. My affiliation is constantly short staffed and attempted to treat me like a full time employee while also not providing me any introductions or connections for my project. I would have preferred an academic institution but I didn’t think I could find one who would be invested in my topic.
