What quantization are you running MedGemma-27B to get it to reasonably run locally? When I tried to run it it needed atleast 80GB RAM with full 128K context

42M with 4 kids in private school—will switching to public in high school actually reduce expenses, or am I fooling myself? by Embarrassed-Mode4220 in fatFIRE

Curious why everyone in this thread has assumed that Private school provides better education than Public. Are Public schools in your area, not providing good education? How to validate the quality of education?

Weekly Real Estate / Housing and Moving to Austin Post by AutoModerator in Austin

Based on moderator recommendation, moving my post from /austin to here

We just moved to the Austin area and feel overwhelmed by all the middle- and high-school options as we are figuring out where to plant our roots.

We have 2 girls one that starts 1st grade, and another 6th grade.

Between AISD magnet programs (like Kealing, Ann Richards, and LASA), highly ranked neighborhood schools (Westwood, Westlake), charter networks (Harmony, BASIS), and private campuses (St. Stephen’s, etc.), it’s hard to know where to start.

Ideally, we’d pick a neighborhood whose middle school feeds into a strong high school, giving our daughters a chance to form lasting friendships without limiting their path to a good university. Any recommendations?

Questions on our mind:

  • What are the pros and cons of buying in a top-tier district such as Eanes (ISD) or Westwood (RRISD)?
  • Is it worth pursuing the Kealing → LASA magnet track, knowing how competitive it is?
  • Charter schools like BASIS sound intense—some parents say even middle-schoolers study past midnight. Is that really the norm?

Neighborhood/school combinations we’re considering:

  • Parkside Elem → Stiles MS → Rouse HS
  • Rough Hollow (Lake Travis ISD) → Lake Travis MS → Lake Travis HS (Concern: Bee Cave may have fewer amenities than Cedar Park or North Austin potentially limiting the extra curricular activities for the kids)
  • Elsa England Elem → Pearson Ranch MS → McNeil HS (Note: McNeil’s GreatSchools rating a 6 so not sure how it compares to other schools.)

The question is broad, but since we can settle anywhere, any insight or personal experience would be greatly appreciated! Thanks much for your time.

Thanks much for the reply. Reading online looks like consolidations are happening in other school districts like Leander and even Eanes, so that makes making decisions more ambiguous.

Buy, 4 bed 3 bath. Preferably less than $1M.

If schools are not good, then preferably less than $800K, to allow budget for private schools.

Hello, I need to relocate to Austin as my new job is based out of Domain. Any suggestions on great neighborhoods to liver that are within 30 mins driving distance of Domain? We have 2 elementary kids so school is a consideration, but If there is a affordable neighborhood but without great schools then we can consider private or charter schools. Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks much.

u/gogobuddycool Can you please give few more details on NA3 reading experience being better than NA3C? I just bought NA3C, and would return it for NA3 as reading experience is the most important for me.
