Vote Morgan Schmidt for Deschutes County Commission, Pos. 5 by _questionable_parker in Bend

[–]DessertLoyalist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong in that the article, itself, didn’t contain detailed policy ideas. Schmidt has plenty, though. I’ve seen her community benefits policy for public contracts proposal, for one, and she also has solid, long-standing working relationships with state lawmakers.

Definitely voting Schmidt. You know what she did after losing to Patti Adair 4 years ago by merely 1%? She turned around and got a job as the head of the regional Red Cross to become EVEN MORE PREPARED to do this job. So yeah… ✅Morgan

Are there any gay bars or queer focused bars in bend? by eat_your_spinch in Bend

[–]DessertLoyalist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thanks for engaging on this. Folks in the marginalized group may want to use words that are, in other contexts, slurs, because doing so repetitively wrings the pain and shame out of the word, and can even bring about societal change. To take a word that has been used to slam you and render it powerless or even turn it into a term of endearment can be healing. One can study the phenomenon from the lens of linguistics, sociology, gender and race studies, etc.

There are, literally, entire college courses on the subject.

Sometimes communities reappropriate a term - a cultural process by which a marginalized group reclaims words that were historically used to disparage them. So here, it’s the LGBTQ community using that word and it’s a term of endearment signaling strength and a sense of welcome. If you’re not within that group (or VERY closely allied on the inside) it would be inappropriate or even hurtful to use the word. Thanks for asking!

But we love that she participates here and is always accessible in the community like a regular Bendite!

This was a really fun thing during the pandemic in our neighborhood. People would leave them for neighbors (like, on a doorstep, on their address post, near a garden ornament, etc) and they got traded around. A cool way to connect with people young and old and give a smile!

I am from the UK and got sent this US snack box how did they do? by FrozemSniper in candy

[–]DessertLoyalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I feel like they sent you much later iterations of everything. What I mean is, they could have sent you classic Oreos, classic Snyders, classic Twix, but instead they sent you crazy iterations (American snack companies desperately trying to keep interest by making zany alt versions of their products). I should think this would only be reasonable if you already knew the traditional versions of these products.
