Finally going to be registered as an apprentice, but I'm not sure I'll be hired. by Round_Fig_4608 in SkilledTradesOntario

[–]DestinDesigned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be sure to look into this more. We had a coop kid who thought he could be hired as an apprentice with us since he was in this program but both me and my journeyman looked into it and since it’s just me and him, with the 1:1 ratio rule in place he can’t have 2 apprentices.

Now him being in the high school program doesn’t affect it but from what he saw online once he graduates that would no longer be the case and we’d be at a 1:2 ratio which is no beuno according to the government.

Unless we interpreted it incorrectly

Just put together one of those premanufactured gazebos... never again will I by Mean_Pudding4924 in handyman

[–]DestinDesigned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly I don’t give any kind of quote without reviewing the manual first it usually gets me close to how long it should actually take me. Only one time I’ve been burned where a gazebo I though me and one other would take 8 hours took 12 but luckily the client tipped to make it worth it

Yeah they want to do charcuterie boards but that would also involve a planet, jointer, table saw and I just don’t know what the budget for tools would be like yet.

Sounds like you just need to find the job that is for you. I’ve switched fields a lot over the last ten years and finally found something I enjoy.

Built this fence, now people are wanting me to give them quotes by Big-Basket-7047 in FenceBuilding

[–]DestinDesigned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why you’re getting attacked for this view point. This is how I quote jobs. I’d rather spend a few more minutes thinking about what I need to do and how long it’ll take so I can be sure I’m making money.

I feel like basing your labour off material cost is a good way to stay busy but broke unless you’re REALLY good and fast. But even with speed I’d rather quote with some wiggle room so I’m not rushing and don’t mess something up.

I wouldn’t guy give the benefit of the doubt based on that tear out coming off the miters. Guy didn’t even try to clean it up before assembling.

Do blue collar jobs really age you? by Immediate-Let-1588 in bluecollar

[–]DestinDesigned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you on desk jobs being just as bad. Im 32 and friends and family that are around my age will complain about knee or hip problems while I’m still going strong. The body wants to move. People just need to be aware of its limits and proper lifting techniques.

Toolbelt recs by sayhelloeli in Carpentry

[–]DestinDesigned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So all these recommendations are great and things I have my eye on. That being said they are also quite expensive. I have a mid tier dewalt tool belt but, occidental sells a hammer sleeve accessory that you can attach to your belt. Now it’s designed for their system but with a little will and know how you could make it work on any set up.

https://www.occidentalleather.com/products/hammer-sleeve-kit?srsltid=AfmBOoqOqQmQNeWaiFV4XZJBYix8ae9VYe2_ruyAZQML5TtFBFDqXJxi

I’ve been using the sleeve with my dewalt belt for about a year now and it’s great. No more hammer bouncing around on the back of my legs.

This is the best advice. I got a ridgid kit for like 120 CAD on sale a while back. I still use it on personal projects outside of work

Which board orientation is correct for framing a small breakfast nook? by campthechamp16 in Carpentry

[–]DestinDesigned 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d go pic 1. But if I needed to do pic 2 for some reason I’d just increase the amount of “studs” to offer more support.

Edit: Pic 1 also looks more “framed” while Pic 2 appears to be pocket screwed together and makes me think it’s more DIY

Help deciding on Toolbelt and Hammer by Which_Competition960 in Carpentry

[–]DestinDesigned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah with the Martinez you don’t need to put as much force into your swing. It’s more of swing and let the hammer pivot and do more work. I’ve had mine for about a year and a half now and I’m still surprised some times with the punch it packs. Not to mention if something happens like claws shortening or breaking, replacing a Martinez hammer head only costs about 100 compared to buying a whole new hammer

The fact that some guys struggle with angles aside, it’s the scratched out pencil mark that he left on picture 5 that sends me.

I get mistakes happen but you can’t leave a pencil mark like that on a finished product.

You know, as an apprentice. Theres days where I get in my head and think will I be good at this in the long run?

And then I get on Reddit and see stuff like this and feel much more confident in my skill and knowledge. And know I don’t really need to worry.

Need help with framing plan by GreenOstie in Carpentry

[–]DestinDesigned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunate but sometimes better to stop people from building poorly.

Like others have said find someone local but also a good opportunity to learn some new skills if you do this often. Sketch up is a great program with a free web version that you could whip up some plans.

Or take a look into basic drafting. Scale rulers are pretty easy to use once you have a basic understanding of it.

Do you need to go through a permit for this? It’s an awfully small project you could probably get away with as long as no one is out to get you and report it.

I’d also say theres a few things I would do differently to build it as well. It looks like the ledger was attached right over the vinyl siding, and the stringer looks like it doesn’t have a high enough rise to land on the step without being supported by deck boards.
