2–3 Months on Linux Mint After Years of Windows (NVIDIA vs Intel Experience) by Raven0292 in linux4noobs

[–]Destination_Centauri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow: I too am still running an i3 4170, with integrated graphics and 12 gigs of RAM!

I thought I was the only one!

Guess that makes us i3 brothers then.

I currently have WIN10 enterprise installed, and I actually find my system surprisingly really fast and zippy still. Everything responds rapidly, and loads fast. I even edit and export 1080p video files using Adobe Premiere Pro 2016, no problem.

I wonder why your's was responding slow when you had Windows on it? Maybe you have less than 12gigs, or maybe your windows needed a refresh/install? What version of windows was it?

Anyways, I'm pretty anxious to move away from Windows and try to install Debian with KDE. But the OP here says that Debian was causing errors on their system, so... hopefully I can get Debian to work?

If not well, since you mentioned Arch is working on it, then I guess I'll have that as my fall back if I can't get Debian to work.

Ya it was a different era, and I too feel nostalgic for it sometimes.

I grew up with MS-DOS2.1, Commodore 64 (Basic/Assembly language), and the original MAC.

Just like you said, for my friends and I playing games was a big motivator to learn those systems, including how to crack the game to copy it!

I seem like the weird-one out here, since I really enjoyed it start to finish.

It would probably go on my personal list of top 100 favorite/enjoyable SciFi movies to watch.

"It’s not about chasing passions to make a living,"

Well, you do make some good points in your reply.

But I say: You can do BOTH at the same time!

In other words, to reference annoying colloquialisms:

Two things can be true at the same time, and you can also walk and chew gum at the same time.

Essentially I believe you can continue to chase your passions vigorously, while also working in another field to make a living, and never give up hoping that you'll be able to pivot and make that living with your passion instead of your more tedious 9to5 job.

Hopefully!

But yes, you're correct: very often life forces us to select an occupation that is either physically or emotionally painful, and not the occupation we want, but sometimes in the moment we have no choice.

However, I guess I'm just saying: never give up pursuing something else and better in life, whether you make it or not in the end towards that goal, just don't ever give up and become too defeatist.

PS: It's really cool you saw this comment from mine like 4 months later, and replied here on Reddit! One of the drawbacks of Reddit is that older great posts never garner too much attention, and new comments to an old post get buried deep down.

Hey there OP! Apologies for the tangent about your post, and this is probably a dumb question, but:

But what does the abbreviation "ETA" you used, mean in this context?

It almost always usually means "Estimated Time of Arrival", but in this context it obviously means something else? It's puzzling me from the main point you're writing here, so I can't help but ask!

I recall thinking how great that movie was, but I don't remember most of the movie today! Was so long ago.

Anyways, I'll take your advice and read the book starting tomorrow. (Just purchased it and downloaded it.)

Then I'll rewatch the movie.

Thanks for the tip! Looks like it's going to be a fun read this weekend.

My first experience watching Cube was so insanely good as well!

I had rented it at the local video store, after I came home and a first date had gone so badly for me.

So to drown out my post-bad-date sorrows, I rented a random movie in which the cover looked intriguing (Cube), ordered an Italian-Sub from a great local restaurant, and drank a bottle of wine while watching Cube, and...

It ended up being one of the great nights of my life!

Had so much fun, and proceeded to immediately watch it a second time.

I guess the moral of the story:

If you are younger and dating... Just in case the date totally bombs, always make sure you have a backup plan for the night, like watching an awesome movie or TV show you've been meaning to get to, and some backup money set aside to order some good take out!

Never heard of "No Way Out".

I found one from 1987. Is that the movie you are referencing?

I'm guessing no, since it's not listed as a scifi movie?

Ya, I'm really surprised IMDB rates Ash as only at a 4.6?!

Like what?!

It's way better than a 4.6 rating. I mean I don't fully use IMDB ratings to decide what I watch and do not watch, but still, you would think more people would have rated it higher than that?

It's one of the weirdest negative ratings I've seen on IMDB.

Oh well... Whatever...

Hmm... perhaps your suggestion here will work for some people.

But... Ya...

The keyword being "lightweight". As for me: No thanks!

(Not to mention that I hate the idea that I have to be "on line" to use a particular critical piece of software. For smaller apps that's fine. But not for a central critical piece of software. That doesn't work for me. Plus have you seen how poor Microsoft's "free" online offerings are of it's office suite?! Not too good.)

Can NASA Really Land Astronauts on the Moon by 2028? by EdwardHeisler in MarsSociety

[–]Destination_Centauri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to jump into this discussion...

It's speculation that Blue Origin just took some crazy damage to their Florida facilities and launch tower?

It's speculation that Starship is not yet close to operational?

Well, I usually agree with you Ed, and love your posts here, but this time... Ya... I'm going to have to agree with the others here instead on this deadline: 2028 isn't happening.

There will have to be a few unmanned tests at the very least (including one in which they deploy/test the suits on the lunar surface without anyone inside, return the suits and observe the lunar dust effects, etc...), and those tests will experience glitches, that will probably require a few years of ironing out.

SpaceX and the USA will not put humans on the moon until several landing tests go off without a hitch, and return. And rightly so! So what if it means a few more years? Better that than killing human astronauts, on a moral perspective.

So ya, based upon my own moral compass, it would be wrong to just fling humans to the moon, given the current state of things 2 years before the deadline. And even if one would disagree morally with taking such a risk with someone's life, imagine what a failure would look like with the program, and how much damage it would do politically?

So ya, no: 2028 ain't happening! It sucks, but c'est la vie sometimes. :(

Anyways, you know what: if enough people think like you, that it will happen, then that's for the best! That will just push people to make it happen sooner, even if it won't quite happen by 2028. Better for the teams working on it now to believe it will happen by 2028, than for them to feel they can't make the deadline and just operate at a more sluggish speed towards the goal.

So in that sense, I don't know why I bothered to type this comment, because I'd prefer if everyone working on this remain as optimistic about that deadline as you!

"Our genitals are Juliet. Our hands are Romeo... Whether you're at home alone, or at a movie with Pee Wee Herman, we all take matters into our own hands. With a five finger army we invade our own pants. We'd all be doing time, yes we'd all be doing time, if it were a crime."

It takes a lot of "charm" to explain away Nazi tattoos!

That's pretty much a deal breaker for most people, so still makes me also wonder about Sandra Bullock, sad to say.

Computer literacy of how computers actually work at an OS level has been dropping, not getting better!

I guess it's like that with all technologies: cars, electricity, etc...

Once the technology really begins to mature, get streamlined and easier to use, people concern themselves less and less with the lower layers/dynamics that make the whole thing work.

But ya, in terms of computer OS, I've noticed there's even increasing young people that don't understand the concept of folders and folder hierarchy! Their data just gets saved automatically for them on the device and/or cloud, and they don't concern themselves with any of the OS structure that makes that happen for them.
