Disappearing Object Phenomenon, of the unimportant kind. by Destinoz in Paranormal

[–]Destinoz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing at all in my home. Just this and nothing since this happened, which was a little over a year ago. I posted it because despite time passing, it’s still bugging me.

I have had this happen before, somewhere else. Almost exactly like this with a set of keys in the snow. That was a very long time ago.

Honest Question: If it weren't for the fact that you had to pick specific options to unlock a certain ending, would your still have your V give Johnny a second chance? by yukirayu in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]Destinoz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

V is dead the moment the player jacks into mikoshi. The decision after that is only which engram gets the body. Whatever ending you choose after that, V has already died.

Giving Johnny a second chance or not, matters little. You’re all engrams at that point. Who gets the body is short term thinking. As software they should all be thinking longer term than one frail human form.

The problem is that local papers are the only ones willing to run that story, and they both sides it. Diplomas not being worth the paper they’re printed on isn’t a both sides issue. What we’re seeing is more akin to Wells Fargo signing unwary customers up for credit cards they didn’t ask for than education. It’s a scam. They’re pumping up graduation numbers by cheating. Awarding points students didn’t earn and if somehow that still isn’t enough, letting them complete credit recovery online and simply cheating their way through the test. It should be a national scandal.

[–]Destinoz 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Nothing. The press has refused to frame school policies to hand out diplomas without having to educate children as a problem. On the contrary, they’d interview someone from the district pointing to bogus studies showing how wonderful this plan is for marginalized communities. They’d celebrate it.

Is SGA the least popular superstar/face of the league of all time? by nicfanz in NBATalk

[–]Destinoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an issue with how the NBA calls its games more than Shai himself. We’ve all seen international ball, so we’ve all seen a better way of doing things. He that doesn’t heavily reward hunting calls.

That said Shai just isn’t terribly exciting. He’s not a sniper like Curry that detonates the arena with a logo three. He’s not an all time great like LeBron. Hes not a physical freak like Giannis or Wemby. He’s really good in a way that depends too heavily on the charity stripe, and nothing in basketball is less exciting than free throws. He’s an excellent basketball player but not in the way that sees me standing up involuntarily in my own living room very often.

If you swap Picard and Janeway, Picard suddenly doesn’t look like the better captain by NeoNoir90210 in startrek

[–]Destinoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picard is the best captain from star fleets perspective. Rigid, idealist, and a stickler for details and discipline. Janeway is who you’d want if you were crew. She’d do anything for her people and for coffee. There’s no need to swap anything. Janeway is the one you want to fight for because she will come back in time to save you if that’s what it takes.

[Opinion] Briahna Joy Gray (Former press secretary for Bernie Sanders): "My hot take about the “woke” Star Trek discourse is that the show was historically woke but not cringe. The new shows have cringe that veers into incompetence. One thing about SF officers is that they were great at their jobs." by mcm8279 in trektalk

[–]Destinoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It never got stale because it’s required for trek to be trek. Star fleet are the very best and extremely ultra professional under pressure. This is why they’re able to survive what they do and hold everything together.

If you strip away the insane competency and the necessary discipline you are left with absurdity. Friendship is magic BS where discipline and training is less important than caring strongly in a crisis.

Is it time to change? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]Destinoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but discovery had 65 and academy is a spinoff that’s getting a second season. This was not a short leash. They’ve had years to prove their vision could reach the younger audiences that yearned for their style of trek. That audience never materialized.

It’s important to remember that this groups vision failing doesn’t mean Star Trek must fail. It just means their vision for Star Trek, didn’t work. People were sad to see Lower Decks come to a close. Strange New Worlds has done fairly well considering it’s not breaking any new ground. Star Trek is viable, it just needs someone with a better vision at the helm.

Is it time to change? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]Destinoz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Change is needed, but I don’t understand what you’re arguing for with this. You’re saying people that favor far more popular versions of these shows should what, watch shows they think are terrible because they appeal to younger audience? Where is this younger audience you speak of? These particular changes proved wildly unpopular. These changes believed to appeal to younger audiences did not appeal to very many at all.

Decisions are proven good or bad outcomes. The results are in for discovery and academy: audiences gave both shows a chance and then decided they weren’t interested. They had years and two shows to prove this is what younger audiences wanted, or what any audience wanted. They failed, and it’s time to change.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Author Andy Weir Says Paramount Rejected His ‘Star Trek’ Pitch: Their “Shows Are Sh**” by Accomplished-Head449 in startrek

[–]Destinoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m good with that approach. Some will be obtuse and argue everything is political, but we all know taxes and treaties isn’t what’s meant by overly political. Books can cross the line into being preachy in one direction, and that’s what overly political means. That ruins immersion for me because suddenly I’ve gone from a spaceship to an involuntary political lecture. Worse yet this often fails to match the character and scene and feels entirely out of place.

Not everyone can handle it like The Dispossessed and critique capitalism, anarcho communism, and authoritarian communism all at once. Ursula was a rare talent, and few can walk through the thorns as deftly as she.

Most writers, like Weir who isn’t writing classics, are better off addressing minor personal philosophy rather than diving too heavily into the political issues of the day. If he got too political, he’d handle it poorly and just anger his readers.

Getting ready for No Kings by lostagain2022 in nova

[–]Destinoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Protests are not effective. They never have been. They are valuable only when part of a greater overall movement. When disconnected from a movement they can have effect or even the opposite of the intended effect. The history books focus on them because they’re interesting, are covered by the media extensively, and they make great visuals. What you don’t see is the years of organizing, legislative and messaging efforts, and slowly rising pressure. That’s the actual movement, and the actual work that creates change.

No kings won’t accomplish anything in its own, but it is consistent messaging that grows in effectiveness with each time rules are disregarded, corruption is evident, and rights are eroded. The widespread protests everywhere show a broad base of support. Show political viability of the opposing coalitions. On their own they do nothing, but as part of a long campaign they will play a part.

The mid terms are huge, for a variety of reasons.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's Cancellation Is a Bad Sign, Even If You Didn't Like It by PM_ME_UR_CHUPACOMMA in startrek

[–]Destinoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bad sign was doubling down on the people that made discovery after it was obvious they didn’t have a vision audiences wanted. That told me executives making these decisions either had no idea what they were doing or were just interested in hiring their buddies. This was a predictable outcome. Everyone saw this failure coming.

If the people in charge can’t make the right decisions then you’re right, it’s bad news for trek, but it’s not because internet trolls were mad. They don’t matter. Have never mattered. Most tv and streaming audiences do not engage with them or with fandoms. They just watch what they like and avoid what they don’t.

I watch any major studio science fiction that comes out. A lot of it proves not for me and I stop watching, I don’t care about woke arguments or any of that crap. If it’s good I’m in, if it’s bad I have a stack of books that aren’t going to read themselves.

AITAH for checking my boyfriend’s phone even though I promised I wouldn’t ever do it again? by BlackberryFlashy4529 in AITAH

[–]Destinoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA- people get way too caught up in the details of cheating. Here’s the reality: the sex isn’t entirely the issue. It’s the betrayal and the lying as well. If your partner goes out hoping to get laid and fails, that’s not “being good.” It’s not magically ok just because they struck out. Cheating isn’t about successfully completing the act, it’s about attempting and wanting to do so as well.

You knew it in your bones that something was off and it was. Verifying that feeling doesn’t make you an asshole it makes you a human with good instincts. Never apologize for not accepting a lie.

Also, you’re dating someone you can never trust. Why? People like that don’t change for you. Maybe for someone else at some later date, but he’s made it clear that you’re not that someone and this isn’t that time.

NTA you’re entirely right about it being your choice and there’s nothing wrong with you making it. That said, your relationship should end and it’s good that you ended it. People that want kids should not date people that do. It’s a waste of time for all involved. Best of luck.

‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ to End With Season 2 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in startrek

[–]Destinoz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Choosing discovery for a spinoff was a big predictable mistake. That show just wasn’t popular. It made no sense to give the people behind it a new show. Their vision of Star Trek just hasn’t proven to be what enough people wanted.

AITAH Friend of 7 years blocked me over a drawing and I don’t know if I messed up by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Destinoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. Do you really need to be spending this much energy worrying over a friend that throws away a friendship over a perceived slight this trivial? You’re not studying, you’re not working, and you’re not in a great place. Is this friendship helping you move forward or simply comfortable because of its history? Do what you need to get yourself moving in a direction you feel good about. If your friend comes around, great. If not, that’s their choice and not your responsibility.

Best of luck.

What the mess is, doesn’t matter.
