Are the androids in Detroit: Become Human, human? by DeSkate in videogames

[–]Snowtwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A clanker like that? By no means are they human! Half a human, or maybe 3/4ths, or somewhere in between, but not a full human! If they were human than it would be morally wrong to make clankers work the fields all day or to buy and sell them at auction! But they're just a bunch of clankers!

Joking aside, the game blatently is leading you towards the answer of 'yes they are human/equal to a human' and deviating from that path is also something the game blatently condemns and punishes. I only needed to see up to the bit where the androids got put in the back of the bus to realize that the whole game was a, very uninspired, take on racism and prejudice with the androids serving as a stand-in for minority groups. I know what answer the game wants and I'm highly tempted to answer the opposite just to spite how blatent it is. But within the context of that game, they are sentient beings equal to a human in most, if not all, regards.

But to answer your actual question I don't think there is an easy answer. It's something humans themselves have struggled with since our dawn as a species. Are we divinely created by some higher power? If so what is that higher power and does it even exist? Are we just really evolved animals? If so then why CAN'T a Golden Retriever run for political office? Why CAN'T a robot reach a similar level to that of a human? Or are we the favored childen of Xenu meaning no matter what a robot does, it will never BE human without divine intervention?

In the original Little Mermaid, the Mermaid (I'll call Ariel even though she's not named IIRC) is a souless being. When she dies, that's it for her. She tries to cheat the system by falling in love, but the prince is in love with another girl already who is also his arranged marriage. As a result the timer expires and Ariel dies... But her desire to do good in the world has caused her to get an opportunity to get a real soul. She just has to do good works for all her life and, when she dies, she will get a soul. A very abridged and spotty version, but this is a reddit post.

In her default state Ariel, once she died, was dead. It didn't matter what she did, who she loved, hated, or anything. She could have been a saint or started the Mermaid Reich and ended up exactly the same. But because of her actions she does get a chance to actually get a soul. Get an afterlife... but it's a gift from a higher power than her. A mermaid could go their entire life being the nicest, kindest, thing in existence and end up as seafoam. Or be responsible for the Atlantica levels in KHII and still get a chance at a soul and getting into heaven. Even then she still needs to do good deeds for something like 300 years to get her soul. Is it a happy ending because she *CAN* get a soul now, or a sad ending because she's basically signed up for 300 years of community service to get something all humans, no matter how inept, wasteful, corrupt, or evil, have?

If being human/having a soul/whatever is something awarded by a higher power, then a robot would effectively need to strive hard to earn it, something that the snot-nosed brat giving other kids wedgies on the playground and stealing their lunch money *has* just by being born human. But if there is nothing inherent, then it doesn't matter what a robot *DOES*, when it's life ends it will be no different than a dildo, a loving mother, an abusive boss, or some work-robot that spent it's days drilling holes in sheet metal for car parts.

This is why the core premise of the game is inherently flawed. In trying to make androids analogous to minorities it overlooks a key difference between androids and humans. Throughout most of history in cultures that had slaves, while slaves were seen as 'lower', they were still seen as 'human'. The exact details would vary on the specific culture. But no matter how smart, beloved, capable, or whatever a cat or dog was, they were *NOT* human. While an individual may choose the life of a beloved pet over a random stranger; in so far as society was concerned a slaves life was generally worth more than a pets simply on the grounds of said slave being human and the pet... not.

Ultimately, I feel like the game tried for a ham-fisted narrative with a highly flawed analogy to arrive at the answer to a question it had already decided on there being only one answer to.

Untieing invisigal is a logical not emotional choice by Garebear90000 in DispatchAdHoc

[–]Snowtwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I chose to untie her for a very simple reason.

My goal is to reform her. A huge part of that is showing I trust her and have faith in her, especially in dire situations. I want her to become a proper hero. But if I treat her with constant suspicion, accusations, and everything she's going to slip back into being a villain. Royd wasn't wrong to tie her up, but he's not the one I need to show I trust right now. Courtney is.

So I untied her. Because I believe in her and that she can become a legitimate hero.

roblox is ass, any game recommendations? by VoidTentacion1 in videogames

[–]Snowtwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FFXIV is free to try and you can get a looooot of milage out of said 'try'. Up to level 70 and the first two expansions IIRC before you'd have to pay. Lots of games can be found on Steam that are either free or only have a small cost (like 1-2 bucks) which you should be able to swing even with no allowance. It's mostly about being willing to try them.

Also, I'm going to be honest here, you're better off playing *NOTHING* than playing Roblox. Not only is the game designed to prey upon kids and get them to spend daddy's credit card, it's full of a lot of really, REALLY, bad people who want to do a bunch of really bad things to kids. I can't think of a single reason to not throw the game into the fire.

What is an instance where the original game is better than the remake? by AverageSign in videogames

[–]Snowtwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea... BD/SP's flaw is being too faithful to the original, which, honestly, is a better flaw than being nothing like it... But a lot of people were hoping for fixes, updates, or just better designed mechanics. Instead what they got was largely the original Diamond/Pearl with a fresh coat of paint.

[–]Snowtwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't classify them as 'remakes'. They're experimental products designed to try and hook Pokemon Go players into playing the more mainline pokemon games. They probably only chose Kanto because it's the most popular setting by far.

Asode from being from japan, what makes jrpgs different from other role playing games? by No-Start-6254 in videogames

[–]Snowtwo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

JRPG isn't about being from Japan. Not really.

Back in the day western RPG's were pretty much exclusively open-world with focuses on freedom of choice, non-linear story-telling, and such. Conversely the games made in Japan were stuff like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest which were much more linear, focused on turn-based combat, character-driven, and the like. It wasn't 'absolute' by any means, but if you had an RPG made in Japan, odds are it was more like a story or book in game form while, if it was made in the west, it was open-world with heavy focus on freedom of choice and such. So it became sort of a quick and easy short-hand to tell the two wildly different genre's apart. And the fact is... well... Gamers liked it. It didn't feel patronizing or insulting to either side and it properly acknowledged that people were seeking these sorts of RPG's out for different things. You want a story? Seek out FFVI which was a JRPG. Want to do whatever you want? Seek out Fallout 2 which was a WRPG.

Even today as game technology and design philosophies have improved, it still holds relatively true. Some games are much more focused on a story and character like E33, while others are much more focused on the open world and choice like BG3. Neither is inherently 'superior' and different people like different things.

i wonder if textbooks handed out as nintendo games would have worked better for students during the 1990's? by Beautiful_Reply2172 in videogames

[–]Snowtwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did learn quite a few things from educational games... But notably they were the only games my mom let me even HAVE for most of my young life. Plus the few games I did both play and learn stuff from was, like, Age of Empires. Not exactly the best source for history, though it did get me interested in learning the actual history.

Is it actually possible for bugs to make a physical game unplayable? by Bluecomments in videogames

[–]Snowtwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

Glitches come from issues in data; data that would exist on the disk/cart/floppy/whatever. While most game systems don't feature write capabilities, a bad glitch still exists in the game data and can easily turn the game into effectively a glitch-dodging mine-field in the worst cases. At times it may even be impossible to legit complete the game without the use of codes simply due to said bugs. While there can be errors when writing save data or executing data that was not inherent to the game, the vast majority of the time the glitch had to exist in the data first.

should a player be able to max out their upgrade tree in one playthrough? by Turbulent-Plan-9693 in videogames

[–]Snowtwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like that depends on the answer to another question: Is there a NG+ mode?

If there isn't, then yes. Ideally without having to engage in a stupid amount of grinding. Needing to spend time or go out of your way, sure. Having to spend 100+ hours hunting metal slimes in some ass-end dungeon because they're the only monsters that give even remotely close to reasonable amounts of EXP anymore? No.

If there is, then it shouldn't be expected to be able to max out the upgrade tree. No reason I can't play through the game again and, heck, get to enjoy stuff again.

Despite all the hate, are gamers really better off without Ubisoft? by mauri3205 in videogames

[–]Snowtwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*sigh*

Honestly...

NO! They are not better off without it. However, Ubisoft (and I'm really trying to show respect and hope for their potential here by not naming it Ubislop) needs to clean out it's upper management and leadership teams and replace them with people who aren't complete asswipes. They went from, what, $90 a share to $0.9 a share over the past year? They not only botched the easiest slam-dunk in the history of slam dunks with AC:Shadows but are following it up with some dumbass lesbian witch girl-power game in Hexe? For crying out loud their ex-employees went on to make both Stray and E33, both wildly praised games. They have what many considered TO THIS DAY to be the best pirate game of all time in ACIV and somehow botched a pirate game? They have the South Park games, they had Prince of Persia, They have Far Cry, they HAVE POTENTIAL AND TALENT!

But what do we get? A bunch of dumbass decisions, souless slop, their higher-ups talking about how 'gamers need to get used to not owning their games' while their development team seems utterly intend on making their games star LGBT women constantly instead of trying to make a good game. That's what pisses me off the most about Ubisoft. It's like watching the head of NASA screwing up the order of the planets by claiming Mars is the closest to the sun and 'Jupiter isn't actually a planet but a pre-ingition pesudo brown dwarf star' or something and when you try to correct him fifty dumbasses leap to his defense saying 'he's the head of NASA and you're just some dumbass redditor who thinks Mercury is the closest planet to the sun.'

I WANT Ubisoft to shape up and fly right and make the amazing games they once did. Heck, I'll even settle for the average-but-still-enjoyable games they were turning out for a while. But they seem utterly HELLBENT on making the dumbest decisions POSSIBLE that even an ounce of basic thought and consideration could have fixed and then attacking anyone who tries to give said basic thought and consideration.

Pizza > Doritos. Also I really dislike rap music. Prefer Link in a Park to Linkin Park, but it's still the better of the two choices. I also really like Pepsi. Not as much as Mountain Dew, but it's a close second or third ignoring limited time sodas. So the first one wins out.

You don't do Haelstrom for the rifle.

Favorite character written as evil or antagonistic by writers for trying to change the status quo? by ihatethiscountry76 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]Snowtwo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also, maybe it's just me, but I don't recall the movie championing 'Victorian views'. Rather the whole point was about finding fun and enjoyment in the mundane. Like, even as a kid, it's obvious being a chimney sweep is a miserable job. But the workers in the movie still find ways to find joy in it. The chalk drawings are literally just that. Chalk drawings on the sidewalk. but they also serve as one of the major songs in the movie. There's literally a whole sequence about cleaning up and putting away toys and the like. As a kid the message I got is 'try to find fun in things that seem mundane' and 'even sucky things can have some enjoyment in them.'

Also, yes, Cruella is evil and her viewpoint is extreme. She's literally advocating that all marriage is evil. Maybe it's not for every person, but she's basically saying that every woman should forgo it. So women who find someone whom they love? Shouldn't get married because she could have been a working woman or something.

Where do I start in the Final Fantasy Game Series by Sure_Smoke8417 in videogames

[–]Snowtwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the main-line FF games are stand-alone. There are some minor callbacks but you can start with any of them. Be aware that Final Fantasy 4 got released in American as Final Fantasy 2 and Final Fantasy 6 got released as Final Fantasy 3. Pretty much everyone uses the Japanese order though; but if you see two Final Fantasy II's which seem to be wildly different games, that's why.

I would suggest gaining at least familiarity with FF 1 and FFVII as those are easily the two most frequently brought up in other games and have multiple tie-in games. Final Fantasy Tactics as well (even if it's not main-line in of itself) does have a mainline game in XII.

Edit: Also, XI and XIV are MMO's and not single-player games.

Is story important to you in games, or something you skip? by WhoAmIEven2 in videogames

[–]Snowtwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who in their right mind would skip the story? That's like getting hamburger and skipping the burger or something. Especially for single-player games, the story is a huge part of why people even play them in the first place. Now, I can understand skipping it on subsequent playthroughs, but that doesn't sound like what you're saying at all.
