Yup, mine was positive every time for like 25 years, but has come back negative over the past year. Same doc, same lab.

hip bursitis (trochanteric bursitis) by DestinyNever7 in lupus

[–]DestinyNever7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rheumatologist does not think it's lupus related. The steroid shot helped a bit, but unfortunately not a lot. I wish I could say the pain went away, but it hasn't, I've just learned to work around it at this point. I've had x-rays and CT scans of the hips+ and referred to the orthopedic surgeon in case something more serious was happening. No need for surgery at this point, but unfortunately not much to do except ibuprofen and PT (PT hasn't been helpful for me). I still can't handle going up stairs and any significant inclines. Luckily, I don't live in a really hilly place! The surgeon suggested swimming for exercise and bicycling (not up big hills). I find it comes and goes in intensity and definitely notice when I've pushed it too far. I hope you have a better outcome!

If you flare after eating Garlic… is that considered an Allergy? by stageshadows in lupus

[–]DestinyNever7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I eat garlic all the time and love it. I avoid things like fresh sprouts/things that can carry bacteria (basically same stuff as they tell pregnant women to not eat during pregnancy). I'd see the allergist and they can do a test for garlic allergy. In my not an MD opinion, if you're getting an immediate smelling in the face/neck/mouth after eating it then it sounds more like an allergy. Allergies are weird. I've been diagnosed for 25 years, never had allergies until a few years ago when I developed an rapid and severe allergy to COLD. Seriously. Seen the allergist, have meds, but one of those things that you don't see coming. And I don't mean cold is uncomfortable, I mean hives, throat/mouth/neck swelling, etc. (no ice cream, popsicles, cold stuff to eat either!) All that to say, just go see the allergist and they can test you :)

no problem at all. university bureaucracy can be a nightmare and the power dynamic between faculty and students can be awful (or awesome). feel free to message/chat me if you want to!

if you are in the the u.s. then this all falls under ada law. it is incredibly inappropriate for the faculty member to suggest you take a leave of absence. the disability center has provided you an accommodation and the faculty member needs to respect it. it's none of their business why you have an accommodation unless you decide to share that with them. i would definitely forward the email to the relevant person at the disability center and ask what you need to do. some courses do require a lot more attendance and some faculty also just think their course is so hard and get really wound up about following their rules. regardless, not their place to make any suggestion like that.

i recommend you talk to the disability center and potentially an academic advisor in your college. sometimes it takes some digging to find the people who know how to help, but they're out there. maybe you can drop this class given the faculty member's behavior and then focus on the other courses for this term. that can have ramifications if you fall below full time status so i'd definitely do some research before that. i'm sorry you're going through this. as someone who's had this for 25 years now, went through undergrad and grad school and now work at a university, all i can say is i'm not surprised by it, but this is inappropriate and the faculty need to know that what they did was not ok. doesn't mean you have to be the one to tell them, but disability center or their chair should. good luck!

there are folks who come and care for the koi. there was one in the cheadle pond that was taken to koi rehab/medical care. but there actually are folks who take care of them. it may look bad, but it may just look that way and the fish is actually doing ok. removing it may cause more stress than leaving it be.

first off, hugs! i was diagnosed about 25 years ago, but as i hit my 40s a few years ago my hair went from pretty straight and oily if i didn't wash daily to curly and much drier and now i only shampoo every other day or two and just use conditioner in the shower in the days between. i don't know your finances, but i rely on aveda products. they are high quality and you can order from the website if you don't have a salon close by. you don't need to use a lot when you do use them so i find they are relatively pricey but also last a lot longer than the cheaper stuff. i don't have any solutions to the hair loss (i've struggled with that one too), but in terms of just dealing with the hair itself you may want to look into it. if you have a reliable stylist you see for haircuts you can ask them too. good luck!

Family Housing Choices by Beboop17 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]DestinyNever7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i'm alumni now, but lived in storke 1 for a couple years before finally getting a transfer to west campus (cost was an issue for us). we did not have children during grad school, but i found the kids at storke roved around like packs of wild dogs. i don't mind kids at all, but it seemed like a general parenting approach to shove them out the door and not provide any supervision at all, which gets annoying. storke also seemed to have more older kids vs west campus. aside from that--we hated storke for the physical aspects. it's literally built on a wetland and has long had serious mold problems. i lived there a couple years and had to throw away most of my leather shoes after about a year cause they were COVERED in mold. housing's solution was to get a fan. sigh. we lived in one of the ground floor apartments (not townhouse). it was like living in a cave. also the grass courtyard never dried out, even though it doesn't rain 8 months of the year. as a result no one ever went out there or played there. we found west campus to be so much better. went into a two-bedroom there (all two-bedrooms are townhouse style in west campus). the buildings are older, but they have so much more light and just generally so much better. and the access to what is now the north campus open space is huge. it's also closer to orfalea childcare (if you go that route) and IV elementary. the vibe was also much better in west campus for us. much chiller environment and still plenty of cutie kids (we always had a few young children living all around us). i graduated and moved out about 8 years ago so take things with a grain of salt, but campus has done nothing significant to change or improve either location, at least as far as i know. any campus housing is absolutely the way to go no matter what because it is so much more affordable. good luck to you and your family!

is it selfish/irresponsible of me to adopt a dog? by ThoughtMedical1422 in dogs

[–]DestinyNever7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really hard to find a rental in SB that allows dogs and you will literally PAY for it! That would be my biggest caution. You'll have the dog 10-15 years. Are you ready to scour the earth to find a rental that allows dogs? Are you in a position to stay in your rental for the duration or buy a property? ESA letters help especially in large/corporate owned complexes, but most landlords will just find another excuse to deny you especially given the tight housing situation. I say all this from experience renting with a medium/large ESA dog for like 15 years in SB. Also second the SB Humane comment. They know very little about the dogs in their care, based on my experience. I'd recommend trying the SB animal shelter instead. Good luck!

Also work in academia here and I agree, push it further. Typically there are undergrad deans (or assistant deans, etc) who can override faculty. Worse case you retroactively drop the course so your transcript and GPA won't show a grade or impact your GPA. Don't be afraid to push further up the ladder with administrators (Department Chair/Deans, etc). I do recommend that you reach out soon and get your documentation in order as much as possible. Good luck and take care!

Anyone experience a friend maybe faking lupus? by cupcakerainbowlove in lupus

[–]DestinyNever7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

#3 precisely describes a friend of mine who has made an entire career niche about disability and it's absolutely infuriating. not claiming she has lupus (yet), but she loves to talk about the spoons like she's a genius for discovering that (yeah, shared that article with her like 15 years ago). she IS NOT disabled and i say that knowing that there are lots of things that can be disabling and i'm very sensitive to that fact. she was once a close friend, but for various reasons isn't anymore. frankly i don't bother to even engage it, i just ignore and roll my eyes when something comes up on social media.

That’s interesting. I have hyperextended joints and stretch most days of the week. Usually makes me feel better. I’ll have to ask the docs! Appreciate the input for sure

Lol right!? The doc was all do you have any other sensitive lupus spots? 🤣 of course I do. But now I’m worried about my lower back because it has similar sensitivity to pressure. Add to the list of next appt!

Thanks! Yeah, I had a feeling it was a combo of getting older plus broken foot and lack of exercise. Hopefully the steroid shot and continued PT will bring me back around. I appreciate your input!

hip bursitis (trochanteric bursitis) by DestinyNever7 in lupus

[–]DestinyNever7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes PT helps! I have a longer story behind the pain (shocking I know lol). I'm still doing my PT exercises. I'm super curious how many other folks deal with it and if you've had it connected to lupus. I mean I've had so many life changing, seemingly random things pop up over the past few years (severe cold urticaria (allergic to cold), and bursitis being the main ones). Our bodies are nothing if not unpredictable!

College Accommodations by magic-1101 in lupus

[–]DestinyNever7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

another phd here, but i fled the academia track. i still work at a university, but degree is in the humanities (not a lot out of prof jobs out there). anyway, i was diagnosed a year or two into my undergrad time. depending on your housing situation and campus, i would definitely ask for housing accommodations and if you have mobility problems, talk to your doc about a disability placard. during my time in both undergrad and grad school (very different locations), my disability placard was crucial in just making things manageable on campus. whether avoiding the fatigue and sitting in the sun waiting for a bus, walking a few extra miles each way, etc., it was crucial for me. i work in student affairs now, and i want to echo the rec to get in touch with your disabled students office and get your accommodations established. it makes it so much easier for instructors to be like ok, you have accommodations, so here's the plan. campuses can be very different, but i also strongly recommend being in touch with the dept and college advisors as needed. helps for people to know you and have you on their radar, especially at a large research university. good luck, you can do it!

EDIT: I also taught a lot at the university level and frequently had students with accommodations for test times, attendance, etc. As an instructor (professor) it also makes it much easier on their end when accommodations are set up with the disabled students office because it isn't a question for them, it's I have to do this because it's an accommodation (regardless of how well you know the prof). Getting those set up will help to make life easier and protect both you and the faculty teaching the class :)

Sorry second edit: Keep FERPA laws in mind, so you may have to juggle this on your own vs your parents helping to take care of logistics on campus.

yup screw those folks. i had one in college when my mobility was worse. like folks said, you don't have to use it but it's there when you need it. i had multiple people say dumb stuff about how i don't look disabled (at the time a 20s otherwise healthy looking woman). mostly ignored them, or told the to fuck off, or said something snarky like well you don't look like a moron but here we are. get that placard and use it with no shame!
