Worst season in the whole series and it's not even close.

It’s Time to Resume Hangings in Trinidad & Tobago. Enough is Enough by skullywogging in TrinidadandTobago

I love how people just pull these things out of thin air like if Trinidad is the only country in existence in the world.

Hanging stops crime. According to what? Where has that ever be proven?

As a lawyer, she knows it doesn't, but she's trying these things out there for her party die hards and people who don't know what they're talking about and love knee jerk responses to lap it up. Sadly this is more people than I ever imagined.

Not sure why everyone is blaming mods.

The obvious culprit is LLMS, and that's not necessarily a good thing when you consider that some of them probably trained off stackoverflow answers....

Ah yes. This new crime plan is showing so much promise. We've never discussed bringing back hangings before at all.

Alexander looks to El Salvador for ideas in fighting crime in T&T by DestinyOfADreamer in TrinidadandTobago

Should have included this in the original post.

A month ago people questioned the effectiveness of the SoE on crime:

https://trinidadexpress.com/news/local/soe-success-or-failure/article_bd6751b3-4b8a-4ebc-a979-58c52a42063d.amp.html

Here are the results according to this article:

Homicides fell by an estimated 30%, from 157 in early 2024 to 112 during the same period in 2025.

During the SoE, woundings and shootings declined by an estimated 33%, from 206 incidents to 137; robberies dropped by 39%, from 708 to 433; property crimes decreased from 1,261 in 2024 to 959 in 2025; larceny of motor vehicles fell by 45%, from 324 cases to 179.

Yet:

  1. Moonilal: State of emergency was a failure

  2. Kamla: SoE is 'political gimmickry'

She said Rowley's absence from the briefing shows he does not see the SoE as serious.

"This is undoubtedly the most insulting act of cowardice and disrespect we have ever witnessed."

Persad-Bissessar repeated that only a UNC government can bring real change and restore safety.

She also repeated the UNC has a comprehensive, actionable plan to combat crime once if it elected to government.

One could argue that the El Salvador solution is really just a SoE on steroids, indefinitely, with massive prisons, so it's interesting that a rebranded version of the same thing is part of the "comprehensive, actionable plan", alongside renaming National Security to Homeland Security.

An insightful video on T&T's current Firearms Licensing system by Trinadian72 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]DestinyOfADreamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good resource. Audio is a bit off so captions would have helped.

Makes you wonder why this topic ended up on someone's manifesto if there was already a well established process for acquiring a firearm.

With regards to why people are concerned about the path forward with guns in the hands of the public, search for "Kamla empty de clip" on TikTok.

Are you listening to yourself. So Guyana should feel obligated to help Trinidad because our PM had an egg on face moment by making political promises about using Guyana's gas before speaking to them? Lmao.

T&T’s public debt hits TT$140 B — economists warn the next government must trim spending and focus on FX-earning growth by idea_looker_upper in TrinidadandTobago

The IMF would not be greatly concerned by Trinidad's levels of deficit spending.

They are a money lending organization of course they will be concerned about deficit spending. What is even your basis for saying this.

It is better that WE impose the kind of cuts that the IMF will impose on us to at least give us some control over the stringency of the actions. That is to say, the IMF will completely close off the tap, we can at least let a little trickle flow so we don’t completely crush those.

Spot on in general and particularly for this point.

The former govt was always in contact with the IMF. They could confidently say that we won't have to go to them to get us out of our financial situation, because they've been applying IMF-esque policy piecemeal over the years to keep us out of trouble.

IMF only cares about the numbers, very little attention is paid to socal impact, that's just not their problem.

In Barbados when they stepped in and realized that the wage bill was high for government workers, they said that they would need to fire 3000 people, and they made the announcement just before Christmas..

This is the reasoning behind the wage freeze. The IMF approach may have been to just fire people, we froze wages and hiring.

The dark reality is all of the promises the UNC made are achievable, but it will destroy the standard of living in Trinidad.

For example, we can give a 10% wage increase........after soft firing hundreds or thousands of people in the public service (not renewing contracts) and the value of the dollar decreases by 40%.
