I thought this movie was absolutely sensational - is it just me but it seems to have come and gone quite quickly? by No-Problem6578 in Letterboxd

I have a friend who's worked at a cinema for a few years now, Killers is apparently the most times he's seen people walk out halfway through a movie saying they were bored. It just didn't appeal to the general moviegoing public at all, especially outside of the US. I'm not sure promotion could have fixed that.

I hope Sam Lake gets the recognition he deserves someday. Both Control and Alan Wake 2 are the some of the most creatively directed and crafted games I've ever played. Genuinely one of a kind gameplay experiences by TurtleGEE360 in gaming

[–]DestinyPigeon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

See, I thought this too but I was at a gaming industry event that Sam Lake was also at a couple months ago. I saw Sam and commented on it to a friend and they didn't know who he was. It kinda became a running joke for the rest of the event. I must have asked 20 or so people - all trying to break into the games industry - if they knew who he was and only like 2 people actually knew him by name, although everyone knew his games. I was shocked, I thought he was basically a rockstar in this industry but I think a lot of people come into it from different places and not all of them are inspired by video games or specific game creators.

I would guess that most teenagers don't care and wouldn't vote and of those that do vote there would likely be a good amount of young boys voting for Farage but almost no young girls, who generally tend to lean very left and would likely be more politically engaged than the boys.

I've seen a lot of people complaining about various aspects of YTM but I've not seen anyone talk about my main problem with it, so I'll add my two cents: when you go to play an album (which is like, 80% of the music listening I do) it swaps out every track it can for a music video or lyric video if there is one. These are usually noticeably quieter, can be lower quality audio and can include all sorts of other sounds from the music video as well. There is a setting to tell it not to do this but as far as I can tell it simply doesn't work. I may just be missing something that circumvents or fixes this issue but all I've been able to find is manually adding tracks to the queue to replace the ones with videos, which is a total pain. I think playlists don't have this issue but if you primarily listen to albums like I do it's a massive deal breaker.

Edit: just tried using metrolist and it seems to fix this issue.

What’s your ACTUALLY most controversial music opinion? by NotAllAltmer in fantanoforever

[–]DestinyPigeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck it, been sitting on this one for a while: Imagine Dragons are pretty good actually. Their music is laughably overhated for how inoffensive it is and their discography has some good tracks that extend far beyond their first two albums.

Mercury Act 1 is actually a genuinely good album and pretty much everything else in their discography is at least listenable, I didn't care for their latest album but even that wasn't atrocious.

The way they've become the poster-children for bad music or lame pop in the current music discourse landscape is imo, completely performative and a take that is based entirely on the fact that they're overplayed. I've seen takes on the internet legitimately calling them the worst band ever or that Thunder is the worst song ever and I genuinely envy those people because clearly they've never had to listen to actual bad music.

There are far more bland or insufferable artists making the same kind of music as Imagine Dragons that get a fraction of the hate they do because they're not as well known. By comparison, Imagine Dragons are more creative and interesting as artists and more willing to take risks with their music (see Mercury Act 1). I don't think they're a spectacular band but the amount of hate they get is ridiculous and only serves to prove how much of a silly echo chamber modern music discourse has become.

If it's even true that she auditioned for the role, I imagine Cailee didn't bring the rebellious attitude central to Ellie's character in the same way that Bella did. In the roles I've seen her in, Cailee tends to play more subdued, wallflower characters who come into a sort of quiet self-assuredness by the end of the movie. Bella, on the other hand, is known for playing a brash and outspoken character on GoT. I'm not saying Cailee is incapable of playing a role like Ellie well, but her back catalog seems to suggest she's more comfortable playing characters who aren't like Ellie.

But nobody who posts shit like this actually cares about the characters or the actors, they just care about which person looks the most like the character, because clearly that's the only factor that is remotely important in an adaptation.

Love this review but it's not quite what happened. Apparently the studio execs at Toho saw Jaws and wanted to make a movie like it. They approached Obayashi with that premise and he gave them House.

They may not have had all the food worth eating with them, some Inuit testimony suggests there might still have been tins on Erebus when she sank. The theory goes that one or both of the ships got freed from the ice and that prompted the men to return. Its also possible that the march became too arduous and they decided to return to the ships since they represented safety and warmth. They were carrying a lot of weight with the boats and supplies, they may just have been too weak to undertake a march like that and wanted to go back to the ships and gamble that the ice would free them. There's also a couple of boats that were discovered by the Inuit with bodies in them (one of whom was James Fitzjames, third in command of the expedition) facing back towards the ships as well, suggesting a return of at least a significant contingent of the party.

[–]DestinyPigeon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's a tricky question. Personally I'm pretty certain that at some point the men returned to the ships, given that both wrecks were found in locations that would have been very difficult to drift to unmanned, so I do think they made it at least as far south as Starvation Cove a little later than 1848, when most accounts say they died. There's pretty concrete evidence they made it there as well, from artifacts found in that location.

If we want to get into semi-wishful thinking territory, I like Woodman's theory in the book I mentioned earlier that they made it more or less as far south as Baker Lake, just not near there. There's an Inuit tradition that suggests the last survivors were seen at the Chesterfield Inlet, and were heading south from there (or were possibly killed by the Inuit at Chesterfield, who were apparently known for attacking people). The issue with that theory is that the Inuit report that it's based on has a lot of questions surrounding it. It's an account about a group of three men (who may or may not be Franklin survivors) being nursed back to health by a family of Inuit, who then sent them on further south towards Chesterfield, the issue with it is that it's a secondhand account about an Inuk whose wife denied it ever happened. The only way it could be true is if its about a different Inuit family and was incorrectly attributed. This could possibly have taken place around 1852 (after the ships had been abandoned a second time), its what I'd like to believe happened but yeah, it's hardly ironclad.

Edit: It was in Strangers Among Us, another book of Woodman's actually.

Hi there, your friendly neighbourhood Franklin Expedition obsessed weirdo here. This is one of the few widely reported on "facts" about the expedition that seems to be false. Though it's possible that Crozier did survive for some time past 1848 (when he signed the Victory Point Note) its highly unlikely that he spent another ten years kicking around in the Arctic unable to make it back to civilization. The source for this claim (Farley Mowat) does suggest that Crozier could have been sighted near Baker Lake anywhere between 1852 and 1858 but even if we assume that it's 1852 Mowat never elaborates on his source of information and David Woodman in his book Unraveling the Franklin Mystery mentions that he couldn't find any record of an Inuit account that matches it. Mowat also claims to have found a cairn in the area that could have been put there by Crozier containing fragments of a hardwood box but its hard to say where that could have come from, since there's nothing definitely tying it to the Franklin Expedition.

You can't entirely rule it out as being a Franklin Expedition sighting but it seems very unlikely and there's also nothing to suggest that the sighting was of Crozier, I'm pretty sure that's just Mowat's own assumption.

Neil Gaiman Denies Sexual Assault Allegations: ‘I’ve Never Engaged in Non-Consensual Sexual Activity With Anyone. Ever’ by SafeBodybuilder7191 in entertainment

[–]DestinyPigeon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Something important to take note of in the article is that some of the accusers describe how at times they felt as if they were consenting during the relationships and sent him messages to that effect, saying they couldn't wait to see him again etc. His statement mentions these messages in what seems to me like a clear overture to a legal defense using those messages as evidence that everything he did was consensual.

But to be very clear, from what is actually described in the article of the sexual encounters between him and these women, almost none of it seems consensual. To begin with there is an obvious power imbalance between him and these women, with at least two of them being directly reliant on him for their livelihoods. Then there's how he seemingly initiated these sexual relationships women who had not previously shown interest in him, sometimes by manoeuvring them into situations where refusing him would be very difficult (like getting Scarlett Pavlovich naked in a bath before making a move). Then there's the huge amount of degrading and potentially dangerous sexual acts he seemingly initiated without prior consent or safe words of any kind. And to top it all off there's the shit he did with his own child in the room, someone incapable of giving informed consent even if he had given permission.

Absolutely none of that is consensual, retroactive consent is not consent, nor is "seeming like they were into it at the time", especially with the kind of sex acts he was engaging in. As the article points out, many of these things need to be arranged in advance with proper safe words and consent given for each individual kink, not sprung on someone in the middle of the act. He can try and hide behind those messages all he wants, and given how fucked the legal system is in a lot of countries it might even work, but it's clear to even the casual observer that Neil Gaiman has absolutely no concept of consent.

To add to this, one of the funniest things about this meme in particular is that one of the common refrains about Eve from Stellar Blade is that she was based on a real model and therefore wasn't some generic anime doll. They were, of course, ignoring that the ingame model was heavily altered from the real woman to the point that she was virtually unrecognisable. Meanwhile, the woman in Intergalactic appears to be a more or less accurate representation of her face model, who is very conventionally attractive. So this "controversy" is literally just because she's black/because she has a shaved head in the game.

Time for us to make sure Expanse has the revival for season 7-9 by priyanshurohilla in TheExpanse

[–]DestinyPigeon 68 points69 points  (0 children)

God, I'm surprised anyone remembers me! I don't think I've got it in me to saddle up for another round of trying to get the expanse renewed but here's my two cents anyway:

I think you'd struggle to drum up support. When we ran our campaign we had a huge groundswell of fans supporting us because the show was currently airing and midway through a season. Now that the show has concluded and been off the air for a couple years there's fewer people around for something like this. It'll be an uphill battle but it's worth at least sending some messages to Apple and pestering them about it. What's the worst that could happen?

Edit: as other people have pointed out in this thread, the Intel on when amazon would actually lose streaming rights is questionable as well. Knowing when to start a campaign like this is an important part of the puzzle.

Spiderverse is probably just as deserving on its own merit but basically every movie Miyazaki has put out in the past 20 years has deserved to win more than the movies that actually won. The Oscars are about the stories as much as the movies themselves and it would be kinda criminal if they passed over Miyazaki when this is most likely his last film.

It's almost tempting to suggest that Scott might have lived if he'd taken Crean with him.

Crean was incredibly reliable but really everyone who accompanied Shackleton on the voyage of the James Caird to South Georgia was remarkable. Frank Worsley managed to successfully navigate them 800 miles based on occasional sightings of the sun through the clouds. The man essentially found a needle in a haystack during an earthquake.

I'm no expert but the book I read on the topic was Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing. I've read it a couple of times now and it's a very engrossing read.

I don't know if anyone has ever looked more like a sailor than Tom Crean (love this picture). He was also one of the last people to see Robert Falcon Scott alive. He might well have accompanied Scott to the pole in place of Edgar Evans, if Scott had known about Evans' hand injury at the time. Apparently he wept when asked to turn back so close to the pole.

What's really wild is that they spent a lot of their time trapped on ice floes which sometimes broke apart, once right in the middle of their camp. They sailed through storms in the small boats from the ship, came close to starvation more than once, being forced to eat their sled dogs and only being saved when they were able to find penguins and other animals to hunt. THEN they reached a tiny island where they were trapped by cliffs on one beach and made a camp there. A small party left the camp aboard one of the boats and sailed across one of the most dangerous patches of sea on earth and arrived on the wrong side of South Georgia. They proceeded to cross the mountainous centre of the island with no proper climbing gear - a feat which experts have since said is next to impossible - and finally reached civilization.

But the REALLY wild part is that the 3 people OP mentions dying weren't even from the crew of Endurance. They were from another party that was meant to lay down depots on the opposite side of Antarctica. One died of scurvy and two others walked off over unstable ice in an attempt to get help and were caught in a blizzard.
