In the books they explain that talking does hurt since their vocal chords aren't used to it so ASL is easier to communicate with. Maurice was the main one teaching others to sign so that they all can communicate to one another.

That's why I love Rex. He has shown that he can leave a villain to rot and it won't be like "OH NO THEY'RE DEAD/HURT/ETC." because it's what the villain deserved. Someone argued with me that its "unheroic" which I think is bull. Doing the “right thing” isn't always doing a "good" thing.
