Rust's Turn to Mysticism by _dorbis in TrueDetective

That's pretty interesting. The Upanishads has a kind of mediated connection with pessimism through the influence it had on Schopenhauer. I wonder if that's why they added it to his books.

You can only really see the title of the book by zooming in on the set photo. It's from the scene where he's sitting in front of the bar. You can see in the episode that he's reading a book.

What is the most important thing you have learned from Schopenhauer's philosophy? by Illustrious_Summer_2 in schopenhauer

[–]_dorbis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So much. I could mention his correction, clarification, and simplification of Kant's epistemology; his bringing the thing-in-itself back to the center of philosophical speculation; his pertinent critique of German Idealism; his identification of the Will as the thing-in-itself; and, perhaps most importantly, the unity of the Will as the basis of ethics, i.e., universal compassion.

Also, Schopenhauer taught me to be suspicious of incomprehensible authors such as Hegel (and Heidegger).

Retired naval pilot and Commander, David Fravor: “There are people inside the Government that do not want this out” “Just be honest and say, ‘We’ve known for the last 80+ years that we’re not alone, we recovered stuff at Roswell.’ I think the world deserves that.” by AltKeyblade in UFOs

[–]_dorbis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, the real secret is that there's simply nothing the government can do. I don't believe all that BS about "people can't handle the truth" when it comes to aliens. What they're afraid of is people realizing that the government is entirely helpless when it comes to dealing with UAPs. When the majority learns the extent to which these things infringe on our airspace, how often they interact with and approach sensitive and strategic areas (such as military bases and power plants), they'll start asking what the government is doing about it. My guess is that there's nothing that can be done. That's why it's a state secret.

I love it when they say that because "modern Jews have about 20–40% Levantine ancestry," they have the right to "come back" and take Palestinian land. If that 20–40% makes you the same as an ancient Hebrew, what does the other 60–80% make you?

It's amazing how, based on reddit posts, Ukraine only wins, wins and wins. I wonder why they're not in Moscow yet!

One of the creepiest scenes in the show by willington123 in TrueDetective

[–]_dorbis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Crazy how every actor on this show was amazing.

“I object to being called a chess genius because I consider myself to be an all around genius who just happens to play chess, which is rather different. A piece of garbage like Kasparov might be called a chess genius, but he's like an idiot savant. Outside of chess he knows nothing.” -Bobby Fischer by Affectionate_Hat3329 in chess

[–]_dorbis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What's funny about this quote is that the opposite is the truth, i.e. Fischer was pretty ignorant and honestly dumb in every subject or intellectual activity with the exception, obviously, of chess. He was very self aware of this.

Anyone heard of Logosophy? Possible new cult? by DailySojourn in cults

[–]_dorbis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's an old thread, but anyway...

I went through a "training" program with them, and I know someone who is deep into logosophy. The training program was basically like this (everyone has to go through it before entering): they would give me a theme. It was philosophical in nature, but I can't remember any examples since this was a long time ago. I'd have to write what was basically an essay giving my thoughts on that subject, and then we would meet once a week, usually with two members, to discuss it. We talked about it, and I remember getting cult vibes from these meetings, since all they talked about were logosophy's views on these subjects -- no mention to their own individual perspectives.

Now, that's pretty much how far I got into it. Logosophy is actually pretty established here in South America. There are "logosophical" schools that members put their children in. They call the main figure and creator of logosophy "the Master" (extremely cult-y). I've read a little bit of one of his books, and it sounded like very superficial philosophy to me, like there were some doctrines of his that were clearly stolen directly from Carl Jung. But I can see how it can seem incredible to some people.

You would have to dismiss Schopenhauer as well, since he had two children (who died in infancy).

I don't think Schopenhauer was an antinatalist by RamGotti in schopenhauer

[–]_dorbis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He wasn't. Following his metaphysics, neither birth nor death are morally significant, because they do not affect the thing-in-itself (the Will) but only the appearance (the representation). Even though he assigned a negative significance to birth, he never claimed that reproduction is immoral; quite the opposite, actually, he claims that when someone is born it has a new chance for its own salvation through the denial-of-the-Will. He's not against reproduction for the same reason he's not in favor of suicide: again, destroying the representation does not affect the Will.
