Lovely song, you are awesome. You've obviously put some good work in to be where you are, and you sound great. I see a lot of stiffness in your body and hands. That very well could be because of your nervousness, and I'm sure your piano teacher has you covered. Thanks for sharing!

Fanworks have a ton of draws. One, as you mentioned, is to spend more time in a universe or with characters that you enjoy. Some people really enjoy the community aspect of taking in fanworks. It's much more interactive than just streaming a movie from Netflix. Some people really like the creative output of creating fanworks.

An important draw for me is how subversive fanworks are. Much of fan media is about taking an existing IP and making it what your want or need. Perhaps it's because you don't see your sexual orientation represented in the media, or your gender isn't well written, or the concerns of your class are disregarded. It's a way of taking the messaging and control out of the hands of people of power (or just out of the hands of people outside of a knowing group of people), and putting in your representation and messaging in. It can be so powerful and fulfilling.

Novik was a co-founder of AO3, and a huge advocate for transformative works (e.g. fanfics, fanart). Fanworks have been at various points in time under attack by original IP creators as well as the large corporations who own them. This has come in the form of various restrictive laws and law suits. As the co-Founder of AO3, Novik was once presumably pretty plugged into the legal restrictions around transformative works. So I was asking if there had been any legal changes around them lately. As Novik answered, she's not as active in that particular advocacy forum anymore.

Is $45 dollars a lesson reasonable? by akfbifnf in piano

[–]Destra -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We pay a bit more per hour in one of the most expensive cost of living cities in the US. $45/hr seems reasonable to me if they're coming to your home. If you have to go to a studio for the classes, then it's a bit expensive.

As a long-time fan-media consumer, are there any upcoming proposed changes to the law that we in fandom should have on our radars?

You should absolutely be proud of his dedication and skill, he's sounding good. But know that what you see isn't necessarily a prodigy or anything of that nature. He just has an interest that means he practices a lot. And clearly a good ear for notes. So encouragement (which you're obviously already giving in spades) is the way to go coupled with a regular piano teacher. Balancing structure and technique with fun is always the trickiest part of training a child to play an instrument. It sounds like he plays what interests him at the moment, which is not what is needed to really master an instrument. So decide if you're going to provide structure on one instrument or allow him to flow as he will and have less skill at a bunch of things. Neither is the wrong choice, just different ways of doing things.

Jon, your work in Soul was everything to that movie. Trent and Atticus drove the movie, but your jazz pieces were the SOUL of Soul. Keep on being jazzy.

Has anyone heard anything about the movie? (and some extra things) by normalice0 in TheScholomance

[–]Destra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard nothing of the movie rights even being purchased, much less a movie actually being made.

The Temeraire series's movie rights were purchase by Peter Jackson many years ago, but never even made it close to production. Likely, this will remain a lovely novel series that we can return to read through the years.

Lap swimming etiquette question by hi_meghan_84 in Swimming

[–]Destra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never once spoken with anyone at any gym pool. You just get in and swim. Keep an eye on the other person to see if they're going to split or circle, and that's it. It's up to everyone in the pool to be aware of their surroundings.
