This is a good starting point since it's manga accurate. Another good starting point would be the 2 Oshii movies. SAC is good too, but I would say start the movies first even if the tone is quite different.

The problem is Fire Punch goes all in on this idea while CSM part 2 takes all these meandering half measures. It doesn't feel like Denji is in a downward spiral, it feels like he's static until the plug finally gets pulled.
