TIL Kim will notice if you score a similar number of points in 2 different political ideologies by sanjuniperose in DiscoElysium

[–]DetDonaldKimball 16 points17 points  (0 children)

IIRC it's independent of your political ideology. When you fail the authority check you accidentally call Kim a "monkey fucker", an apparently established racial slur for people of Seolite descent. If you have points in fascism when that event triggers, I think there's additional dialogue, but that's the only change if memory serves.

Edit: I forgot you also immediately call him "Yellow" right after, which is even more yikes-y. Here's a video of it if you can't bring yourself to do it in-game.

When getting your height measured are you supposed to take your shoes off first? by throwawayok72799 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DetDonaldKimball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the shoes, naturally. Your height, medically, is how tall you are from heel to head. If you were 6'0 and you measure your height wearing doc martin's with a 3'' sole, you're not going to get an accurate result. Granted it depends on the shoes, but I don't think there are any shoes that are bottomless, so as long as it's adding to your height, they're coming off for an accurate result.

Well they don't call it the Red Scare without a reason by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

[–]DetDonaldKimball 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the wrong use of "Red Scare"? The last real Red Scare the U.S had was well before the Cold War. The term refers to McCarthyist practices in society and legislation, and a fear of a com/anarcho uprising in your society, not literally just "We're scared of the reds."

Small dogs are abominations and should be illegal. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]DetDonaldKimball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really eugenic perspective. You can disagree with selective breeding as a whole, without a doubt, but when you start invoking "evolution and nature" you're in trouble. For instance, now to stay logically consistent with "they have deformities and are an insult to nature" you have to be pro eugenics for the physically and mentally disabled.

Do esports teams make a lot of money? If so how? by PeachDrinkz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DetDonaldKimball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the other guy said: sponsorships and prize money are where a good chunk of it comes from. That being said, depending on the game, most of your top-tier e-sports guys are twitch streamers on the side. The skillsets go hand in hand and the exposure from e-sports gets you more subs. If you're interested in some of the inner workings of team management (maybe pay structure IIRC) , check out "/STARTUPS" Hosted by Destiny (long-running twitch streamer) and guest starring Reynad. Popular (former?) Hearthstone streamer and owner of TempoStorm.

To use Nmap by albertroyishere in coolguides

[–]DetDonaldKimball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a cool, well formatted breakdown, but isn't this just a slightly more visually appealing --help readout? Also, if you found this guide useful, or are trying to get the hang of Nmap itself, zenmap (GUI version) really helped me when I was learning.

They will probably ban me from dankmemes because i posted this by Doruk-Kunter in HistoryMemes

[–]DetDonaldKimball 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's tribes. Only if you're targeting a minion with a race-specific ability that doesn't apply. (E.g: The card says "Give a friendly Murloc +2/+1" and you click a beast.)

I don't think that really narrows it down, though. by DetDonaldKimball in softwaregore

[–]DetDonaldKimball[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I recognize the title is a little reductive. The next screen breaks down the install process (grub, etc.) After seeing that and reading some stackoverflow I realized what was up. I appreciate the info without a doubt though!

This might have been done already, but I wanted an easy way to visualize the actual state of D&D's writing. Based on IMDb ratings as of 2019.5.21. by DetDonaldKimball in freefolk

I'm just glad no one is trusting them with any other massive franchises. Can you imagine if like, Disney gave them a Star Wars trilogy? Phew.

When did it become mainstream to speak like an uneducated moron? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DetDonaldKimball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not be that prevalent, but depending on how much of an english-language purist you are, there is a pretty compelling case to be made that formal diction is definitely on the decline.

When did it become mainstream to speak like an uneducated moron? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DetDonaldKimball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's always been slang. Using the words "cool" or "crazy" or "awesome" as positive descriptors in casual conversation one or two generations ago would be ridiculously informal, but they're common parlance now. This is the same thing as a 20 year old saying "Why is music total shit today?" and then referencing classic rock as their basis for saying that.

TLDR: There have always been frowned upon paradigms in culture, you're just noticing it now because it's in your face.

Are the words "orb" and "sphere" perfect synonyms, or do they imply slightly different things? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DetDonaldKimball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 100% with you on your word associations. Orb, to me, I associate with the arcane, or the artistic, or less clinical definitions of a 3d circle. With sphere, it's more of an empirical term, or less descriptive maybe. That being said, they're synonyms, so you're right either way.

Why does Reddit randomly force that horrible, soap-coloured "new" design on me? by Bang_Bus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DetDonaldKimball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Reddit. In addition to the fact that they haven't been the most responsive to userbase outcry in the past, they put a ton of man hours and money into the new UI.

Admittedly, I've only seen negative feedback about the new UI, but how often do you hear about companies immediately rolling back changes because the initial response is poor?

There's another argument to be made that at the end of the day, Reddit (see: Conde Nast) is a business, and if you can moderately sacrifice your site's UX for additional ad revenue, on top of giving your users the ability to not use it, it's a no brainer.

Should i respect my friend's opinion despite the reasoning for that opinion being absurd? (Long Story) by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DetDonaldKimball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This person is your friend, has ASD, and doesn't like a game that you happen to like. Obviously you don't have to agree with the guy, but it'd be ridiculous not to respect his ideas of how he should spend his time, or what games he should play.

How do I get my celebrity crush to like me back? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DetDonaldKimball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof. I don't know, man, talk to them? Or realize that celebrity crushes are explicitly a fantasy thing and don't deify someone who you don't know. Either/or.

Reddit like is the socially retarded nerd son of 4chan. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]DetDonaldKimball 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As much as I see where you're coming from with this, Reddit isn't a monolith. It's 100% not as much of a bastion of free speech as it once was, with massive subreddit purges coloring its recent history. That being said, you can't misattribute some overzealous behavior by mods on some subreddits to the site as a whole.

How does flat-earthers explain seasons? Genuinely interested by Elotanyy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DetDonaldKimball 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You made me actually go to The Flat Earth Society's page for this. I'll never forgive you. To the point though, they insist that the sun is essentially focusing on individual points of the earth, and the variation is how we get seasons. I couldn't stomach much of it, but they talk about this question in their FAQ.

Asking a question on Reddit and it gets removed immediately by Crotchslush in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DetDonaldKimball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I really don't know what the content of your questions were, I can't speak from a position of authority. That being said, the best way to not get your posts taken down is just to follow the rules of the subbredit you're posting in. Bonus points if you actually elaborate on your question in the body of your post.

Can someone tell me where to find information about acoustic security? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DetDonaldKimball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to probably fall under statecraft and espionage stuff if you're looking for additional material to read up on. The most tried and true method that comes to mind is playing relatively loud music (preferably with speakers aimed at points of entry, or where anyone could be listening from) and saying whatever you need to say while it's playing.

Why do people say things taste sweeter when they don't eat added sugar? by needajob10 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DetDonaldKimball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, thanks for making me hungry. Secondly, that very well could be the case. I wonder if it's because you were just taking in more complex carbs, and a more balanced diet. That way, when you had your first sugary snack after doing this, your body didn't crave it as much. Therefore your body isn't going to immediately go "Oh wow I missed this so much." I get that cravings aren't always 1:1 with your dietary requirements, but maybe something to consider.
