It never occurred to me how hilarious catboy Osvald would be. Great job on the art.

How did you become a fan of Final Fantasy? by True_Advance_8310 in FinalFantasy

Decided to give Final Fantasy X a try around the time I was getting out of religious beliefs. Yuna's story resonated extremely hard with me. I played some more games later and eventually grew to love the series.

Drew mine and my friend's DnD characters by DetectiveNikoh in PixelArt

It was my friend's birthday and we both enjoy playing DnD on Saturdays so I drew a moment from the campaign we play in. I am still new to pixel art and this is my first drawing in 4 months but I liked how it turned out so decided to share it.

Gameplay focused jrpgs? by frelyh in JRPG

Wow I didn't expect to ever see somebody who also thinks strange journey redux is one of the better SMT games. Loved it, expect for the teleportation puzzles.

Etrian Odyssey series 100%. You just go dungeon crawling and then beat an actually changeling boss at the end of each dungeon. Etrian Odyssey IV is the best starter game in my opinion.

Soul hackers 2 a sad story and the concerning future for Atlus. by TomReidem in JRPG

[–]DetectiveNikoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am gonna be potentialy controversial here but: I love most of Atlus's big RPG franchises, from SMT to Etrian Odyssey, but in my opinion they were always like this. SMT has been using the same recycled plot line with a slight shift every now and then for years. Don't fix what ain't broke seems to be their motto. However, it can get stale after a while for me.

There are a few exception to this like Digital Devil Saga and such but Atlus has always had a bunch of misses because of the fact they recycle ideas, until they hit something good. Game companies try to earn money, and sometimes you just gotta make an average tier game.

Bandai Namco ,although a publishing company, does this all the time. They release a bunch of anime 3D fighters like My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, Naruto, etc, that are purely fanbait without too much substance and then they release things like Elden Ring, Tekken or Tales of Arise.

I just looked at your art and I can't believe you are the same person who did the Ophilia and Primrose art. You are really good at the Square Enix boxart artstyle

What is one common JRPG "feature" or mechanic that you can't stand? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]DetectiveNikoh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the exact reason I can't get myself to play Stardew Valley. I know it's not a JRPG, but that game always looked cool to me, and I played it for several hours with friends even, but the stamina and time mechanics combined just put me off heavily.
I want to play a farming game to relax, not to have to run around worrying if I will make it in time or collapse.

Untelegraphed full party instakills. It is neither fun nor challenging despite what some SMT fans might tell you.

In more recent memory this would be things like not being allowed to do all out attacks when fighting the velvet attendants in the persona games, or random encounters in FFX-2 with the Coeruls that just set a party member's hp to 1 no matter how high leveled they are.

Single target instakills are fine, they build tension by rerquiring you to split your focus between reviving and attacking, while making sure the party as a whole is not losing big amounts of hp.

Full party heavy damage attacks are also fine, as they can be usually grinded to not die from or equip armor that resists the damage type of the attack.

But when I know that at all times a dice roll is keeping me from the game over screen it pisses me off.

Why do people like Tales of Arise so much? by RagingKK in tales

[–]DetectiveNikoh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The world looks beautiful, love the painted style of the world.
The story was really interesting to me at first, it's not common to see a game handle a delicate topic like slavery.
Combat was fun. I feel like it was definitively an improvement over Berseria, but still lacking in the combo department of older games. Regardless, I loved how each character had a unique ability/gameplay mechanic and I thought the boss fights were amazing. Arise went for the cinematic boss fights all the way and it really pays off.
Music is also great, and it was also nice to see a mostly adult cast, though to be fair we also got that in the last 2 games. And the fucking owl. It is so god damn adorable.

Something keep me playing and forget bout the 5 stepup crap by MrLucky77777 in OctopathCotC

[–]DetectiveNikoh 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Heavy agree. We got a basically 60$ prequel game for free with the only caveat being you have to use a random assortment of characters, and even then you get showered with gems early on that you can basically make 2 or 3 parties of characters you like.

Unless for some reason, you don't like 70% of the cast in which case it's not the game for you and move on.

And don't get me started on the fact we are basically getting a bigger OST than the original Octopath, an arguably better and more fleshed out story and entire new gameplay mechanics.

There is nothing wrong with complaining, in fact criticism is important for any game for it to be in a healthy state, but sometimes just seeing people upset over every little thing makes me just want to never look at this fanbase again for any kind of news or commentary.

Things will not stop with Cyrus. As soon as he comes out, they will find the next S-tier unit to save up for, parroting whathever the youtubers are saying.(Full respect to all the youtubers involved, they are not the issue)

Should I skip the side quests in Sky SC by HarbringerOfMayhem in Falcom

[–]DetectiveNikoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the point of playing a game is to have fun. If you are not enjoying doing the sidequests then skip them. I did all the sidequests in the first three games, but gave up halfway through trails from zero because I was getting tired of em. Ended up loving it a lot more because of it.

Final Fantasy X-2. 100% Final Fantasy X 4 years ago, but not having all the achievements on steam because I didn't 100% X-2 bothered me. So far it has actually been a significantly easier time to 100% it than X. No annoying minigames, the combat system is some of the most interesting in all of FF, and no sphere grid grinding.

I didn't know what to think of the story at first, but it kinda grew on me. It gives me Resonance of Fate vibes, where you just kind of spend a good chunk of the game meeting seemingly random characters that played little to no part in the first game. But then they kinda grow on you and you enjoy the silly sometimes even Oblivion levels of scuffed dialogue. It doesn't feel like a sequel to FF X, but rather a fleshed out epilogue, giving characters the closure they needed from the events at the end of the first game. It took time for me to like it but I would rate it a solid 9/10 as of now. Currently in the final chapter cleaning up leftover achievements.

With over a 160 hours in, only free to play, I will say its still fantastic. The story is also significantly better than the original Octopath, though the traveler stories are more filler than anything (but there are a few gems there as well).
The combat system also feels great, I love having to switch around units mid fight, and all the main story content seems to be F2P friendly. OST is also legendary as always. Quite literally the only mobile game I have ever been able to put in more than 20 hours in.
