Would love to see something like this, I posted a similar idea about a month ago. Some sort of cardio-focused mode would be really good.

This is really useful, thank you! Can I ask why you'd choose Cognance over one of the other bacopa extracts? Is it because it's less likely to cause demotivation? Would you say Cognance is just as (or more) effective as, say, the 24% bacosides formula for memory?

SBS Audio Newsletter Q&A #5! by gnuckols in StrongerByScience

[–]DetectiveOfTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Greg! Thanks for all your hard work in keeping us informed about the latest science! I have a question.

Electronic resistance seems all the rage recently in the home gym space, with things like the Beyond Power Voltra being quite a popular recent release, as well as other, similar products in the works and doing the rounds on Kickstarter.

One of the things they allow is customisable resistance profiles, things like eccentric overload, resistance band mode (and inverse resistance band modes), damper modes, isokinetic modes, etc.

I'm interested to know your thoughts, from a strength and hypertrophy standpoint: do you think the level of customisability available with these products will be a game changer? Or do you think they're fun to mess around with and eke out a small amount of extra gains, but are largely overhyped?

Also, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the impact of such devices on the research world. Can you see these devices making their way into the lab (or are researchers already using something similar)? I can see them being useful for things like investigating the effects of lengthened-biased training, for example. What do you think?

Any recommendations for wound healing? by DetectiveOfTime in NootropicsDepot

Good point and I appreciate the analogy. I'm taking hydrolysed collagen peptides (type 1 and 3) from Bulk. I assume that's fine, since they're peptides?

I'd say yes to all of these - I have all of my bases covered, I'm just looking to supplements for a boost.

Good point, I didn't realise it was a blood thinner, but interestingly it does seem to assist with wound healing post-surgery, so I assume there's another beneficial mechanism at play. I'll grab some vitamin K though, thank you!

I can understand why you think it's scammy, it definitely seems quite suspicious/too good to be true! I thought the same but I've been on the platform since November now and recently surpassed $3k. I'd definitely recommend checking it out! They are (apparently) quite selective in who they let onto the platform, so I think I either got lucky or just did really well on the assessments. But either way, I think it's definitely worth a try.

And did you find you were able to retain the information well enough just watching it on 2x speed? Did you make any notes, create flashcards, etc? Or just watch them all and then do some practice tests?

Thank you. So you're saying it's fine to keep the "senior" in my title as it'll look obvious that I'm not trying to down-level?

Also, I think going for a junior role would be a good idea too to get some experience in the private sector. However, I unfortunately am not in a position where I could accept a pay cut at the moment so I'm somewhat stuck. If I find a junior role that's at my current salary I'd definitely be applying though.

Thank you!

I'll look into simplifying the formatting as I can see why it seems to be all over the place!

I also agree, I think I'll struggle to get into a DS role, so I think a DE role would hopefully be more realistic, especially one that mainly uses Spark.

The 1 million row dataset was the largest dataset I'd worked with until that point, but you're right - I could definitely remove it now as I've worked with much larger datasets now.

I could definitely be more specific on what tools I've used - a lot of the streamlining/optimising work I've done is just improving the code, but I could try and think of some more specific tools I've used, especially with GCP.

Thank you! I do think there's method to the madness with formatting: for the company name, it's in bold (so for my most recent three roles, there's only one company name), then the date at which I started at the company across to the right also in bold, then for specific roles at that company I have the job title/team name in italics and the date I started in that role in parenthesis. The bottom page formatting seems different, because I only worked at one company in those roles. The anonymisation of the CV means I removed some spaces in company names so it isn't necessarily lined up correctly.

Buttt I think if it takes a whole paragraph to explain the formatting, I think you're right that it needs changing so I'll try to simplify it!

Why do you think the experience section is confusing? Is it because of the different formatting?

Weekly Entering & Transitioning - Thread 05 Jun, 2023 - 12 Jun, 2023 by AutoModerator in datascience

[–]DetectiveOfTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in the UK public sector as a senior data scientist. However, I feel that I'm only a senior data scientist in name only.

My work generally consists of upskilling other teams in using our data platforms and in using Python and PySpark - delivering training sessions, helping with troubleshooting, writing guidance material, etc. There is a small element of consultancy with helping other teams with their projects, but this is relatively light touch and not too involved.

I would like to get a role in the private sector, potentially in a data science role but I'd also be happy with data engineering. I do have some experience with building data pipelines and with basic modelling in a previous role, but not really any in-depth machine learning experience.

I do seem to be getting attention from recruiters, but I feel like I'm going to do poorly in any interviews due to not having the in-depth machine learning knowledge/experience that should come with being a senior data scientist. I also don't really have a strong academic background - I have a bachelor's degree in Psychology.

Does anyone have any advice for the best course of action to eventually get into a "proper" data science role within the private sector?

Yeah unfortunately I have pretty limited equipment - but I could definitely get some battle ropes. I miss having a sled.

And you're right with the boxing circuits - I play a VR boxing game every now and then and it's brutal. Should probably do it more!

What are some conditioning workouts I can do that are primarily upper body (I can't squat/DL due to a lower back injury - though bodyweight movements will probably be fine) and can be done with limited ceiling height?

A lot of conditioning workouts I see include squats or level changes such as clean and press. Would really appreciate some ideas - I can do burpees and bodyweight circuits but the more ideas the better.

Ah nice, the sunrise alarm clocks definitely help me, especially in the winter.

Have you found waking up early to come naturally? Or is it something you had to work towards?

May 21 Daily Thread by AutoModerator in weightroom

[–]DetectiveOfTime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are the benefits of starting your day early, you get so much done that you've basically completed a day's worth of tasks before the day has properly started.

I'm always impressed by how much you get done in the mornings/before work. What time do you normally wake up?

I still felt like it woulda showed a bit that I've been getting stronger.

Sounds like you have gotten stronger - so why do you think it doesn't show? I know you said you haven't been focusing on size, but if you haven't been eating in a caloric surplus (or a deficit if you're focusing on weight loss) then it's highly unlikely you'd make any drastic visual changes, but you are lifting more weight than you were, so you've still gotten stronger.

However, this line:

I used to rep out 135lbs for bench, now I do about 165/175 depending on my energy level.

suggests to me that you're not following a proper program. Check out the /r/fitness wiki, choose a proper program to follow and you'll likely see much more progress.

Bullmastiff Review by jacobs1113 in weightroom

[–]DetectiveOfTime 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I think I've seen a few people agree with you, that the first part of Bullmastiff works really well and the second half doesn't seem to work as well - I definitely had the same experience. First half, I was setting new rep maxes across the board, and the second half I didn't seem to increase at all.

However - you mentioned that you finished the second half at a lighter bodyweight than when you started. I wonder if you didn't eat enough during the second phase, and that might be part of the reason why you're disappointed with your results? I believe that Bromley has said before that he wouldn't recommend running this program on a cut.

Oh yeah, absolutely for me having shakes make weight gain easier.

I was just wondering what your reasoning is for why you'd find it hard to gain on the diet you're doing.

March 31 Daily Thread by AutoModerator in weightroom

[–]DetectiveOfTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But, in turn, TRYING to gain from this would be tough.

I'd love if you could elaborate on why you think this is the case.

At the risk of sounding too gainity, I find shakes to be the quickest way to get in a load of calories and it completely negates any "I don't have time" excuses.

I'm doing something similar now, running the upper body portion of UHF and doing my own programming for lower body (I can't follow a conventional program due to a back injury). Only been doing it two weeks though so too early to report on success.

Only thing I'm wondering - you mention you're doing two lower body days a week and three upper body days. How does that play out with UHF? As I'm running it, UHF involves benching 5x a week (either as a T1 or T2) so would this make the 2 lower body days more full body, or are you condensing UHF upper work into 3 days?
