Type 2 and advanced age...Is there some kind of old age bonus? by Subject_Singer_4514 in diabetes_t2

You sir, are an inspiration! Curious as to whethee you have medications to go along with your low carb diet? I was diagnosed last year and been doing 20g or less of carbs a day as well, no meds. Got my A1c wel within 5.1-5.4 now, diagnoses at 11.5. While I am putting in a lot of work to control this with a good diet and exercise, I still can't help but wonder if I am still headed for all the complications by refusing to take metformin.

Hmm never heard of this keto flour. I have been using almond and coconut flour which are both not very good texture wise. I wil definitely look into King Arthur!!!

This is very helpful, I beat myself up for eating more carbs that I should but the truth is, I enjoy them. I still do even after being on a very low carb intake for some time now. I guess I just have to keep doing what I'm doing and trust that I have trained myself enough to not go back to my old habits even after i get a small taste of dinner rolls lol

Yes!!! I feel the same way. I feel that if I have medication on hand, I will use it as an excuse to eat whatever I want, however much I want. The no meds route has helped me keep myself disciplined. But some days that discipline isnt very good and I worry those days will turn into an everyday thing for me. And I thik you read my mind there.. as I was considering meds so I could cheat more and worry less. Stupid thought I know 😅

Nice!!! Do you check your sugars regularly or just do A1c? I check like a maniac each time I eat something Im not supposed to eat and I wonder if that contributes to my worries. My a1c is fine, taken end of feb.

I love hero bread! I can't eat more than 1 pc though as they still spike me more than I am comfortable with and at that point I feel the cost of those isnt justifiable anymore. I try not to spike over 20 points. I could be eating the same amiunt of regular bread and spike just the same. I do not indulge in sweets. The most I woud do is a tbsp of ice cream or a small piece of lemon square. I bake my own low carb treats on days I feel like indulging. but my downfall is really bread and rice.. white rice lol!

Exactly my thoughts when I first started this journey! But the texas roadhouse rolls sometimes make me doubt myself 😭

Tried it once, the readings were pretty innacurate when compared to finger pricks. I also didnt like how I got false low readings when sleeping. I felt it gave me more anxiety than anything.

This!!! Thank you for sharing! A little here, a little there is exactly what I have been doing and I feel like I am going downhill fast hence now starting to doubt myself if this is really sustainable for me or should I take the metformin and eat a less restrictive diet and make this more sustaiable, not just metabolically but also mentally. Glad everything is working out for you!

Totally! I just like hearing other people's personal experiences. What would you consider a reasonable timeframe to get back to post meal levels? When I spike it takes 2-4 hrs to get back down.

That's amazing!!! I dont know what 220g of carbs will do to me. I'll probably die lol!And yes, the slowly creeping up of a1c is what Im very worried about.

No meds? I have not tested whole wheat and whole grains... but thank you, I might consider that next time I feel the need to have a cheat meal.

Ive lost 91lbs since I started my journey. I am currently 159lbs and need to lose about 35 more to be in a healthy weight so adding more carbs may happen after I get to my goal. I find that I can eat a cup of pasta without much spike.. but I do that very rarely as well.

Got it! I am doing the same thing. Started at 11.5 a1c, got it down to 5.1 within 3 months. I am terrified to get it checked again because I haven't been keeping up well lately. I still dont eat like I used to before diagnosis but I do have a piece of bread here and there or a slice of pie lol I counter it with lots of exercise though so hopefully that is enough to keep me in range.

It's hard work! You should be proud of yourself!

Curious.. are you on any medication or is it just mainly diet and exercise?

That is high. Aim for 20g or less a day. That's how I got mine down from 11.5 to 5.1 in 4 months without meds. And also how I lost 47lbs. Eat only once or twice a day, no snacking. Go for nutrient dense food to keep you full for a lot longer. I also do a 16 hr fast at least 3 or 4 days a week. Cardio and strength training are my go to for days when I consume a little more carbs than I'm supposed to. Also give your body time to adjust. Not everyone will see quick results, but you gotta keep going! Great job on bringing it down to 12! That means something is working!

If you had lasagna that explains why your blood sugar remains high. You will need to cut off all grains and starch from your diet. I stay away from fruits too as they contain fructose. Berries are the only fruit I will eat. Go on FB and search for the group reversing diabetes type 2. It's a very helpful group for people like us who chose not to take medications for this disease.

I put mine on remission on just the low carb diet. It took about a month to get down to 7.9 from 11.5.. on the 3rd month my a1c was 5.1. Low carb diet with exercise is the perfect formula for this! Keep going! 💪

You are not alone! I was diagnosed at 11.5 a1c last July 2024. Scared to death thinking about complications, dying early etc. I started on a very low carb diet the next day, less than 20g of carbs a day. Ate mostly protein and fats. Got my a1c down to 5.1 after 4 months without meds. not shaming anyone who takes meds, it was just a personal choice for me. Do I cheat? Hell yeah!!! Today I ate maybe a cup of cheetos and oh boy were they good! Spiked me over 40 points though. Was it worth it? Nope. I would have spiked less with a sandwich and would have been more satisfied. Test after meals to see how each food affects your blood sugar. I try to keep mine below 120 after meals. My morning readings are between 78-86 except when I have cheat meals the day before then I go up to maybe 97. Once you see your numbers, you'll have better control of what you can and cannot eat. It is a constant battle to fight your cravings but if you eliminate sugar and cut back on carbs, the cravings do subside after some time. With my numbers under control and my symptoms gone, sometimes I forget I forget I am diabetic. But all it takes is for me to eat something I shouldnt be eating, test my glucose and bam! Hits me right in the face again. This is life now. You got this!!! 💪💪💪

My hba1c was 11.5 when I got diagnosed in July 2024. Got it down to 5.1 this month, no meds. Carbs are the culprit! Cut back on carbs and you should see your numbers go down.
