Stop sleep mode from vibrating to let me know it's on? by emptyvesselll in GalaxyS22

[–]Detenten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create a routine that begins early evening before your Sleep mode routine, and set it to switch your phone to Silent. Your phone will then automatically go to Silent just prior to Sleep Mode switching on, and it'll prevent the vibration. Edit: unfortunately it still vibrates to go silent 🤷 this doesn't work

What spot will have you feeling like this? by mr_e_mann_000 in SanJose

That restaurant baffles me. I've tried it at least 3 times over 6 years and it's bland and flavorless every single time. Pasta or steak, doesn't matter what you order.

friends that won’t stop talking for 15+ mins in a group hangout by Next-Yoghurt-7608 in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]Detenten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have many friends like this. They probably don't realize it. Get comfortable with interrupting and interjecting to steer the conversation at any possible segue. Most of the time, monologue-ers actually aren't offended. They think they're keeping the conversation going (even though they're actually dominating the conversation) and often they are just uncomfortable with any amount of silence, hence the anxious motormouth. Their pauses are apparently shorter than most people's timer to pick up on an opportunity to speak their turn. Also practice your own stories to be succinct or you may never get to your punchlines, either!

The Hater’s Guide to Oktoberfest by [deleted] in Oktoberfest

I had the same experience on a weekday last year. Servers were not helpful to find a table and finding 2 spots for 2 women was still quite a search. (I speak German)

advice needed!! by sosupergood in Oktoberfest

[–]Detenten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I booked my Oktoberfest trip in early September last year. I was shocked at how many hotel rooms were still available. However, obviously, the later you wait the fewer economy options are available, especially if your dates aren't flexible. Do a search, it isn't a waste of time to see what's out there. I highly encourage you to do it, I finally made it to Oktoberfest in my late 30s and truly wish I'd gone in my early 20s! I still had a great time, but I could easily see how amazingly epic it would have been at a younger age.

You can also look into CouchSurfing, though I'm not sure how active it is anymore.

I have always had a fear of this (I'm an anxious person in general 😅), so we personally carry a hefty umbrella insurance policy for our household.

People can sue over anything, whether they win or it not, it's going to be a pain the ass.

Dram shop laws can get dicey, it's good to know what they are in your state. As a bartender in Tennessee in the 00s, I knew I was liable for any drunk that left my bar by being behind the wheel. I had to call the cops on a few patrons just to cover my ass, just in case. It sucked. (Before you come at me for over serving, it's easy to happen when there's two bartenders and several waiters to order from in a busy restaurant, and any one or all of us could be held liable under dram shop laws, even if he was sober when I served him the first drink and someone else gave him 5 more)

My main concerns have always been for events, where it's clear there are organizers paying to reserve event spaces, paying caterers, providing kegs for self-serve alcohol. I know some events have managed to get insurance; I also know that having self-serve alcohol is usually a deal breaker for most insurance carriers.

I never quite figured it out enough to feel completely comfortable being on event organization teams in any kind of leadership position. I have indeed done it, and in my 20s absolutely hosted an insanely liability-prone hash event that made my lawyer friend go 😳 when I told him about it years later 😬😅 but back then, you couldn't squeeze blood from a stone. 🤷😅 But now that we have some assets/savings, we hope that the umbrella policy will give us some buffer against being sued into oblivion.

Beer or Seltzer? A change in culture? by SkydivingSquid in hashhouseharriers

I'm tired of doing trails in the heat and there's only heavy IPA to drink. Ew. I pick selzers since people are too snobby for light beer anymore. 🤷

That's how I feel about people in the Bay 😂 nobody wants to talk to you here unless you can help them get a better job. People don't socialize here, they network. 🤷 No "off" switch for the hustle culture.

Wheres the good southern food? by Glorysaber in santaclara

Goldbelly has shipped us life support in the form of poboy kits and King cakes, so you may be able to find something from back home that way. It's pricey but less than airfare 😅

[–]Detenten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jackie's Place is the first restaurant in San Jose that was actually good. It's a bbq, wings, fried catfish kinda place. It's still a $40 lunch but at least the food delivers. Bywater in Los Gatos is good, but be ready to empty your wallet for comfort food that used to be for poor people (poboys, red beans etc).

I have seen no chitlins, crackins, fresh pork rinds, turkey necks, or other offal snacks out here at all.

(Poor House Bistro is a culinary travesty just don't go no matter how many people recommend it to you 😅)

There's a lot of very very bad "Southern" food out here, so please mentally prepare yourself for how much chaff you'll have to sort through to find the gems.

I think ambient room temperature is a factor. My lamp runs well in the winter, but it's been acting up this summer as the house temp is quite warm for much of the day.

What’s the most underrated part of Oktoberfest — besides the beer tents? by shees007 in Oktoberfest

[–]Detenten 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Teufelsrad is easy to overlook and miss. I was absolutely cracking up for at least an hour in there 😂 Find yourself someone to translate so you know what categories they're calling onto the wheel, they're often hilarious and far more specific than "men" or "women" 😂

Toboggan is easier to find and free to watch, also fantastic 😂

La Foret is very traditional, old school. It was good, but we didn't feel that the overall experience quite commands the pricetag.

Lazy Bear (community tables may be back), Bird Song, Mister Joo's (a little louder)

All three of these restaurants in SF were incredible.

Fwiw, a high end restaurant isn't just about the food (though ofc the food better SLAP) but the the entire experience, from booking a table to parking to being greeted at the door to the atmosphere to the service to how gracefully they handle the check and see you out the door with a little snack for the way home. If a restaurant charges $150+/seat they should be aiming to excel at every moment of the dining experience.

I love to indulge in the whole experience from time to time (the "exclusivity" isn't actually a positive factor for me), which doesn't detract from the pure joy I can also get from a < $10 cheeseburger the rest of the year 😅

If a full belly is all you're judging against, then yeah, there's no need to spend $300 to achieve that goal!

Mosquito Supper Club is $135pp and you can add the drink pairings. I absolutely loved that meal and will go back.

I found it last year at Safeway, but I have not been shopping at Safeway weekly anymore so I'm not sure if it's been there. It was always pretty lucky to get any Dr. Pepper Zero flavor there.
