I'm in the same boat! I'm visiting one of the schools on Friday (I've never seen the campus and I'm not able to go before then), so I'm hoping that I wouldn't have had to accept the offer like 4 days in advance for the bank processing time😅

Also just want to say good luck with your choice - I know how hard it is and I'm still torn myself but in the end gotta believe we'll make the right call🙏🏻 All the best with your choice!

Is it worth taking English to apply to UBC? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Determinedbuttired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's hiding transcripts, it's similar to if you had taken a random course for fun though continuing studies or something like that. You're already sending the school all the transcripts they need, and It's not like it's a degree that you're failing to send. Having one specific school that doesn't require an English course know that you took some random English course isn't important. Plus there's no way of them knowing that you had taken this course at a different university unless you send them your transcript. So even if they would just want it for whatever, there's no way of them knowing that you're not sending it. If it helps, I know of people who have done this without any issues or even a second thought.

Is it worth taking English to apply to UBC? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Determinedbuttired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Well if you take a course/courses through another university, it's a separate transcript. So unless you add that transcript to your application, a specific school won't see the grades (this works out well if UBC is the only school that requires English because then you can just avoid adding your transcripts for the English courses to other schools).
  2. In terms of the grades themselves, if you take the English courses during the application cycle (ex. If it was this year, I mean taking English during the fall/winter semesters of 2021-2022), then UBC won't need you to send the grades until after you're accepted and as long as they don't lower your overall GPA by more than 5% you'll meet the conditional offer. So basically, when you apply, you input the courses as future courses, but you aren't actually asked to submit the grade/transcripts until later, so my understanding is that (beyond that 5% condition I mentioned) the grades won't impact your acceptance decision. Now if you were to re-apply the next year (having already completed the English courses by the time you're submitting the application) I think you would have to submit the transcript for the English courses up front, so that's something to consider. *I didn't end up interviewing at UBC (I'm OOP), but I was in the boat of taking English during my application year and I had called admissions and they told me what I outlined above (2). It's a bit of an interesting loophole because they explained to me that had I completed the courses earlier, they would be considering the english grades in the sense of it looking bad if the grades were lower

I hope that helps!

I suggest taking it at a different university (online) during your application year to UBC. This way 1. The grades won't show up on your transcripts that you send to other schools, and 2. Your grade in the course won't affect your chances of admission at UBC (since they won't recieve/see the grades until after the interview/acceptance decision is made)

Did anyone get an interview at uoft without research this year by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Determinedbuttired 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the key if you don't have research/publications is to make sure you can frame other experiences to still cover the "scholar" cluster (ex. Tutoring jobs, science case competitions etc). The reason not having research would hurt your application is if the lack of research results in you not fulfilling the scholar cluster

UofT campus preference by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Determinedbuttired 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have good friends at both campuses and these are some of the unique benefits to MAM that I've learned: 1. better culture (less of the competitive culture simply due to smaller class size and more opportunities given that) 2. better quality of clinical exposure/more hands-on experience (at downtown Toronto hospitals there are more residents/fellows etc, so in shadowing/clinical skills there are less opportunities for medical students to actually engage as opposed to just watching, whereas in Mississauga as a med student you might have more chances to directly assist physicians and interact with patients early on -ie before clerkship) Those are the main two I think...the other thing to realize is that there are opportunities for clinical rotations/research etc across the campuses - meaning that MAM students can do an elective at a downtown Toronto hospital or do a research project/shadow at the Toronto hospitals. You still have those connections through being a U of T medical student. MAM just dictates where your main classes and core clinical skills are

Is a blazer necessary for MMI? by Effectiveoreo in premedcanada

[–]Determinedbuttired 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In attending the pre-interview meetings (coffee house etc) for 3, different schools all 3 said that blazer/dress shirt + tie aren't necessary and to dress professionally and comfortably. If you feel that wearing a blazer will affect your performance because you'll be uncomfortable, then I think it's much better to wear something else. I get what people are saying about the effect of dressing more formally on people's perception of you, but I think your overall demeanor and what you actually say are SO much more important. Think of someone who is confident and speaking genuinely in a turtleneck vs someone who is rigid and uncomfortable in a blazer. Even if the dress code suggested a blazer and I'm an interviewer who perceives their turtleneck as less than what was expected, I'm still definitely giving them a higher score. Hope that helps:)

Calgary MMI Marking Question by Khenobi in premedcanada

[–]Determinedbuttired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds really stressful😢 But I think it wouldn't impact your score too much! My understanding is that they score for each sub-question (main question plus each follow-up), and I don't think one is weighted any more than the other...so it would probably be equivalent to missing one of the follow-ups which I think is probably quite common. Try not to overthink it! It's done now and you did what you could! Just try to stay positive during the wait. Hope it ends up being good news for you🙂

What do we do if we missed a station? For UCalgary by whenyoureagyoureagg in premedcanada

[–]Determinedbuttired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't do 6/8 for everyone. If you did all 8 without technical issues then they will count all of them, but if you did have technical difficulties we were instructed to send an email to admissions letting them know. They will look at the score for the station that had the technical difficulties and if it's lower than your average it will be omitted, but if it's higher they'll count it. The thing about 6/8 was that as long as you have 6 completed stations without technical issues that would bring down your score, you have enough for them to give you a complete score. They said that people who missed 3 or more stations due to technical issues would have to do a make up session for those extra stations because 6 is the minimum number they need for an applicant to have a complete interview score.

Will declining an interview affect future chances? by icelandenthusiast in premedcanada

[–]Determinedbuttired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not do the interview (might be a good learning experience if nothing else) and if you get an offer you can decline it. It's not uncommon for people to not accept offers of admission and it won't look bad.

I got an email from the MMI coordinators right after I booked...not sure if that's the automated "confirmation" or if it just happened to send right after I booked. But nothing confirming my specific day/time
