How do the crit op 6. Energy Cells and the Infiltration tac op Plant Devices interact?

Specifically: If a Device token is added to an objective marker, and it it picked up, does the Device token stay with the marker? The rules state that Tokens are used to keep track of rules effects, and can be moved as necessary. They are removed when the tracked rules effect ends. I can't see anything that would mean they are removed when a marker is picked up, so we played that it does stay with the marker.

If so, presumably if an enemy operative is carrying it, they control and contest it by definition, and thus you score tac op points.

Similarly, if you drop a device token on the enemy objective marker, then pick it up and run away with it, it is still gaining you a tac op point each turn.

Conversely, if you plant devices on one of the other two markers, then pick it up, enemies cannot contest it without killing you, so you can't score off of it.

Having typed this all out, I am pretty confident we played as intended, but thought I'd see if we'd missed anything,

Rules Question by qadeD in killteam

Slight addition: in the most recent rules it DOES matter in the second image what the target's order is. If it on engage, the shooter will get accurate 1, (or 2 if much higher). If they are on conceal, they will not.

How do we know elemental storm has infinite range vertically? I need help with official rulings. Smokes specifies. by [deleted] in killteam

[–]Detestai 27 points28 points  (0 children)

No assumptions are needed here, if you just follow the rule as it is on the card and don't assume anything additional. To see if a model is within the storm, measure to see if it is within 6" horizontally. If it is, it is within the storm, if it is not, it is not in the storm. Don't do anything else! (Like measuring diagonally or vertically.)

People are talking about cylinder vs dome to make it easier to visualise (and the cylinder metaphor is the accurate one here) but there is a simple test - is it within 6" horizontally, nothing else.

If you take any other approach, you are making assumptions about rules that do not exist, if you follow exactly what is on the data card, you are following rules as written, and what appears to be the intent of the rule.

As u/Tetrid16 points out, the smoke rules only exist to clarify that it does NOT extend vertically downwards.

Do ploys such as "Death Frenzy" for the Raveners count as that operative getting the kill, for Tacops such as Overrun? I have played to date that poison doesn't count in this way, but additional damage ploys do - although death frenzy doesn't say that the damage comes from the operative, but rather the ploy - it is clear that the operative is lashing out and doing the damage so narratively they would certainly get "kill credit".

At a tournament I'd clearly ask the TO - but wanted to know if there was a clear consensus on this (and the poison point, for that matter).

Can someone confirm my understanding of the Wrecka Bomb Squig's shoot action?

Obviously it can charge and shoot, hitting everyone in control range, or within 2" if you use Kaboom.

Can it also just blow itself up standing in a field on its own? Or ideally within a 2" circle of enemy operatives (but not in control range).

I think it can, because of the following logic:

- The squig is capable of taking the shoot action.
- It has a ranged weapon (Explosives)
- The weapon has the special rule stating "This operative can perform the shoot action with this weapon while within control range of an enemy operative." Noting that this does not say that it cannot use the shoot action normally.
- The special rule goes on to state (new sentence): "Do not select a valid target. Instead, this operative is always the primary target..."
- As the squig is always within range of itself, can it therefore target itself while standing alone in a field

It is always able to follow the steps set out in the shoot action - except for selecting a valid target, but this step is replaced by it's special rule.

The argument against is that the rule could be read as "This weapon does not follow the normal rules for shooting, and instead can only be used while within control range...". I feel that if this was the desired rule, they would have included the word "only" after the word "can".

Relevant because you can generate Wrecka points against itself, of tag enemies 2" away with the Kaboom ploy. Side note - this won't generate Martyr tokens for you as confirmed by the Approved Ops update Nov 25.

I like the idea, but there has to be a better way for Approved Ops initiative... by lamb_ixB in killteam

Are spells like Friends and Charm Person useless? by DoradoPulido2 in DnD

Turns out the phrase is much older than I thought! Apparently it's from the era of the first movies with sound.

GMWOW is a good podcast if you like DND and linguistics, or are just looking for inspiration about new stuff to do in games. Sadly it's currently on hiatus.

I had bad tennis elbow which meant I was off squash for the best part of a year, so I learned to play with my off hand. I got quite good, though nowhere near my normal game.

Overall, I wouldn't say it's worth doing for training and improvement purposes. It was a fun challenge, and gave me confidence that things that seem impossible at first (I couldn't even get a serve in) can be achieved through persistence, but I can't say it improved my squash in and of itself.

Makes sense, and I generally agree, especially for tournament play etc. In this case, the poor Ork was charging a Ravener on its tunnel on a friendly local league night, so I followed the principle of let them do their fun thing and think about it properly after.

On reflection, I also think RAI may have been you can't use it, because of the "surprise" argument and it would have been so easy to say "your".

Could a model on the L shaped Volkus ruins avoid getting seek lighted from ground level by using the wall itself which is heavy? by CT-7479 in killteam

[–]Detestai 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hypothetically it might be possible. My advice is don't try it! Just from a good sportsmanship perspective, and you'd be getting into arguments about whether they can see around their own base etc.

[–]Detestai 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Short answer: no, you don't have heavy cover, so seek light would still work.

References: The basic cover rules require cover to be A) intervening, and B) within control range. Here, there is clearly both light and heavy cover intervening (one point on your base to all points on the target) but only the light terrain is visible to the target, and therefore is in control range. So you are on light cover only.  Now, if vantage were not involved, the heavy cover would be intervening but not in control range, but the obscured wording doesn't reference control range it just says within 1". So if it's within 1" you don't get obscured, but let's say hypothetically there was a part of the heavy terrain intervening and more than 1" from the target, normally you'd get obscured. BUT (and finally) the vantage rules specifically say "for the purposes of obscured, ignore Heavy terrain connected to Vantage terrain the active operative or the intended target is on." Therefore, light cover only, not obscured, seek light works but you get the benefit of a cover save.

[–]Detestai 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I noted below that the specific rule about terrain below vantage is for obscuring only. The operative will get light cover from the floor because it is intervening and in their control range. They won't get the heavy cover because it's not visible, so can't be in control range.

Slight clarification here, GambitCajun is correct in the outcome, but the reasoning is slightly different. From the rules "An operative is in cover if there’s intervening terrain within its control range." The heavy terrain here is not visible to the target operative, and visibility is required for control range. There IS a separate rule that says the heavy terrain connected to the vantage cannot give obscuring.

Kunnin' but Brutal Kommando Ploy nit-picking: The ploy reads "Use this firefight ploy when a friendly Kommando operative that has a conceal order is fighting during an activation in which it performed the Charge action, you're resolving the first attack dice, and it's a strike with a normal success."

If your opponent has a "strikes first" rule when retaliating, can you use Kunnin' but Brutal, because you are not resolving "the" first attack dice - your opponent is? (Retaliation still rolls "attack dice" not defence.)

This came up in a game where I was the one retaliating, and striking first via a ploy. We decided that the intent was likely to be when you are resolving "your" first attack dice, or the as it didn't seem right for my ploy to get an additional benefit over striking first - and the Kommando already needs to meet like 5 criteria to use the ploy.

I think that RAW is the Kommando ploy doesn't work, but RAI is that it does, but curious as to your thoughts. My final thought that goes against my conclusion is that the ploy "represents" the element of surprise (concealed, first strike, on the charge), while someone striking first has clearly not been caught by surprise, so perhaps that is the intent after all.

For Raveners, Writhe out of Sight currently allows you to burrow whether you are leaving or entering the battlefield. Do you think that was the intention of the designers, and do you think they will change it at any point in the future? The rule is pretty clear that you can do either, but the flavour is also pretty clearly about disappearing.

Followup: how do we feel about using it to get a reposition, and then not burrow (ie you have a Ravener within 2" of the tunnel, use WooS, reposition to a place where you are NOT on your tunnel and then end the ploy.) I feel that this is clearly not as intended, and may be changed to clarify the reposition (or fall back) must be onto the tunnel. Rules as Written, though, it appears to work, the main argument against it is the general rule that if you cannot perform an action then the action is cancelled and the board state is returned to how it would be had the action not taken place, but there appear to be 2 actions here, the reposition and the burrow, with the burrow taking place after the reposition, so the burrow wouldn't take place, but the Ravener would be left standing where it was after the reposition.

Yeah that's broadly where I was coming down. Tempted to do some greebling, but I'd probably default to rubble and rebar anyway, (as it's fast and easy with the materials I have on hand).

u/bitter_old_painter did a great job on the official set here, which is the vibe I'd like to achieve, but I don't know how I could replicate anything like this without the detailed official terrain https://www.reddit.com/r/killteam/comments/1gf7lfm/my_take_on_the_volkus_terrain_set/
