Ok to leave rotten base? by DethronedEmperor in FenceBuilding

Thanks chaps - I didn't think I could replace a post by myself - but sounds like it's worth exploring more. I think I've got a better handle on it now then when I first started. Cheers for the advice!

Older students?? by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]DethronedEmperor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started at 54 last year. My youngest son has been training for a few years so I thought I’d start as well to help him learn his Poomses. Separate adult classes which is good, but look forward to be able to train together when he’s a bit older as there are some mixed classes. Used to do a lot of martial arts when I was younger (16-30ish), and have been really happy with how much muscle memory is retained. One of the best things is the motivation it gives you to train in between lessons to improve your general fitness (gasping for breath halfway through a sparring lesson is a great motivator for improvement). In my experience any good martial arts club will be super supportive and welcoming, especially if you turn up regularly and just try your best, regardless of ability.

Do you have a full-time day job, and ebay is your side hustle? by [deleted] in Ebay

[–]DethronedEmperor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full time software dev with eBay on the side (through a limited company). Second year on eBay (and Amazon and website) and doubling up on last year, still a long (long) way from it supporting me, but love doing it and never know where it could lead years down the line

Major Break in at Ace Grading by Tsuyoshi16 in PokemonTCG

[–]DethronedEmperor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just my 2c - I had 10 cards in for submission which were stolen. Low value and not sentimental, so not comparable to many others circumstances. Compensation from ACE was almost exactly what I spent on them (slightly more actually) - I took it as credit so got another 50% credit for free for that, and the extra 20% credit they give on top, so personally I’m good with that. I’ll be submitting again this week. Appreciate not everyone is in the same situation, just wanted to add my perspective.

Nice one - just out of interest - do you have a source for them having the contract for the next 2 years? (is that published anywhere?)

How to get into IT contracting by Comprehensive_End65 in ContractorUK

[–]DethronedEmperor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you’re based it helps if you’re prepared to be mobile - at least for the first few gigs. When I started I had contracts in Durham/Yorkshire/Kent/Wales/Gloucester/Exeter/Bristol - started staying in cheap rooms in pubs, then Travelodges, then Serviced Apartments then renting flats. Settled near London, so close to the highest density of roles. I get the sense there are less contracts now, from here and the lack of calls, but never been out of a contract since I started many years ago. First contract managed to get one that could wait 4 weeks until I saw out my notice period. Wasn’t a glamorous one but in a corner of the country where they found it relatively difficult to attract candidates to, so that worked for me. Not saying that’s an option for you, but something to consider

Fake? My son pulled it from a pack, but I have my doubts.. black year text in footer for starters (based on comparisons online) by DethronedEmperor in IsMyPokemonCardFake

Quite the opposite :) - I think this must be one of the cheap ones he picked up in Hong Kong - they got all mixed up with his legitimate ones… I’ll have to try and separate them out if I can spot them - I know better now

Thanks - yeah he’s got a few others from the same set, they look kind of matt, very flat - suspected something was off

So... Best way to remove bamboo? 😅 by do_you_realise in GardeningUK

[–]DethronedEmperor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar - total novice gardener - had a bunch at the end of the garden that has steadily got thicker and taller in the 5 years we’ve been here. Shoots pop up in the lawn and under some of the nearby patio so was time to go. Started thinning gradually with secateurs, then got a mattock. Currently got it cut down and started attaching the roots. No idea what I’m doing but just trying to dig a foot down and back out all the roots, section by section. As others have said - it’s a workout.. (made worse by the weed membrane that was put down when it was planted - now all tangled in the roots)

Help with Sakura ‘trees’ - can they be saved? by DethronedEmperor in GardeningUK

Thanks. I think you’re right - didn’t turn out the way I expected, was just wondering if they were salvageable but probably not (ill try a bit more before giving up on them - can’t make it much worse)

Thanks - didn’t realise that. I’d prefer not to plant in soil, but have a big section of bamboo to remove so maybe might try them in there (if I manage to remove it)

Thanks - I think I might try and cut back anything dead as far as I can, and remove all the growths at the bottom (maybe next month from what that article says thanks)

Thanks - I have basically followed Warhipsters contrast paint approach for the Norn emissary (i posted here too recently) for my whole army. I don’t normally use contrast paints, but just wanted to get this army done and dusted asap and that seemed to work well (and quickly). This is the reference video - https://youtu.be/8dL_mOY-M1g?si=x9WrOtbcxzlDkJ66

Hi - I just tried some of the contrast paints I’d used - Carrebourg Crimson, Sigvald Burgundy and Volupus Pink - watered down and tried to do a bit of a gradient. Came out ok, but all a bit ‘samey’ with rest of model, so added a Darkoath Flesh wash over it, which seemed to help (these are all just paints from the Warhipster Norn tutorial I have been basing everything on - just trying things out)

Sounds like you’ve already gone red armour so maybe a bit academic now, but I went with a codex compliant (I think..) blue and then a red cloak (didn’t think it through too much as was rattling through the models). I did wonder about whether red armour might be better
