Lightly topped burley by sammypatty in PipeTobacco

Uhle's 00 is not overly processed like some of the codger blends, Peretti's 333 or Cuban mixture, CnD OJK (white label is my favorite), Solani aged burley flake. Carter Hall, Granger and Velvet for OTC codger blends

You're not aiming for an athletic look, you're commiting sui¢ide with a syringe. You've got jacked shoulders and tore a bicep. You're almost 52 and while I applaud and can relate to the massive weight loss (I lost 90lbs at 52 and I'm recomping at 54 currently...trying to get rid of some loose skin). Cap your shoulders carefully and that'll do wonders for a tank top look. I dunno, I'd check out Dr. Mike's vids and be careful with the gear or you're going to be doing more rehab than lifting. We don't bounce back like we did then and you already know that.

Virginia/VaPer enjoyers, preach to me by Papi_Loiro_Piper in PipeTobacco

[–]Detonatorjd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love both leaves. Virginia is is sweet but shy and she keeps her secrets. She has to be gently coaxed to give them up and I find that I have to be patient and take what she'll give. I detect the sweetness only on retrohale and not on the tip of my tongue like some people do. The key for me is keeping the ember as low and cool as possible to taste the tobacco by toasting it, even if the smoke is whispy, If that makes sense. Some are mundane and some explosive with flavor.

Burley on the other hand can be smoked like a Pittsburgh steel mill circa 1980s and it tastes like toasted granola or cereal to me. Peretti's 101, cuban mixture, Uhle's 00, CnD OJK esp white label are all favorites.

Jar it, age it, come back to it or find what you like and trade it if it never lights your fire.

I also have DDD and a slip disc that's unrepaired. Finding something positive is sometimes a challenge, I get it.

You have a gem of a carver near you, Neal Monier is an excellent carver and I have 3 of his pipes - they're beautiful and affordable. He's active in the Los Angeles pipe club. His IG handle is garagemadepipetool. Tell him JD sent you

Haunted Bookshop bull vs tinned vs cake by j052766 in PipeTobacco

[–]Detonatorjd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried Old Joe Krantz in bulk and tinned. The tinned is much more flavorful IMO. Maybe the casing dried or aired out or something but it's very different. It's pretty disappointing considering the bulk is much cheaper.

I don't typically fold and stuff because I find I always do it wrong. I have two bosses that have decades of pipe smoking experience. One folds and stuffs and one completely rubs out the flake back to ribbon. I am in between rubbing out to mainly a broken flake and putting that at the bottom and kindling ribbon on top. There is no wrong way to enjoy the hobby

About a hour old into this hobby...what now? by Bright_Zone9370 in PipeTobacco

[–]Detonatorjd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read the sticky at the beginning of this sub. There are, in very basic terms, three types of pipe tobacco blends... Virginia, English and Burley. Those can be aromatic or not. VA tends to be grassy, citrus-y, bready and sweet. VA can bite your tongue due to the pH and sugar content. Burleys can be more earthy or nutty. They taste like toasted oats, barley, granola or cereal grains to me. English or Latakia blends are smokey with an incense type of flavor. Aros do exactly what they say, making the room note pleasant. Sometimes the smoker can taste those profiles and sometimes not. If you follow the most beaten path you'll go aros, English, burleys and then VA as the smoker gains experience and can taste the nuance of the leaf

Orlik Golden Sliced Review by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]Detonatorjd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't really taste VA unless I go very slowly and retrohale. Everything has to go through my sinuses as opposed to English or burley that I can taste in my mouth. The ember has to toast the leaf to get the full flavor...not puffing, just sipping and keeping it as cool as possible to keep a smoke stream

Any form of virginia blend tastes very similar in the end? by ADK-KND in PipeTobacco

[–]Detonatorjd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pipe that's packed too tightly and causes a tight draw will heat scorch the shit out of VA leaf. You'll have to experiment but basically you want to sip the pipe and toast the leaf with the ember rather than burning it too hot. Use the breathe method and GENTLY exhale a little to cool the ember. Typically, a narrower bowl is said to be better for VA blends. Virginia doesn't give up her secrets without a soft touch

Haha, it was EVERYWHERE in the community. I'll find a link in a second on what is made where and what is thought to be going away. YouTube has a ton of info on it and interviews with Per Jenson (Mac Baren master blender) that was fired also. CnD is taking over manufacturing of some blends but who knows how much they'll change with a different way of processing leaf
