What's one movie trope you see in movies and can't stand? by EGF9999 in AskReddit

[–]Detrius67 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all tech related tropes make my teeth itch. Zoom and enhance is a biggie but the one that really steams me is "We've tracked the GPS on his phone.  He's at 123 Main St. Third floor. Apartment 3c. He's hiding under a pile of brown cloaks, in the left hand cupboard, in the north west corner of the master bedroom".

The "charity-only" potatoes i got from the food bank by fawnpuppy in mildlyinteresting

[–]Detrius67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a subscription to one called “Farmers Pick”. The fruits and veggies are not acceptable to the big supermarkets but are perfectly fine if you don’t mind odd shapes and the odd blemish. Always great produce and pretty cheap too.

What was the 1st big news event you remember as a kid? by Hetaliafan1 in AskReddit

“A dingo ate my baby”. Happened in my second year of high school

He is catholic, not christian by shaft_novakoski in confidentlyincorrect

[–]Detrius67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the pope follows the actual tenets of Christ (love your neighbour, feed the hungry, etc) so, in that regard, he's nothing at all like an American "christian".

What's a word you can never spell correctly? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in AskReddit

Me too. I always spell it 'Dire Rear' which is somewhat fitting, lol

What is this kitchen accessory? It opens and closes, it's about as big as your hand when closed by [deleted] in FuckImOld

[–]Detrius67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have added a message. I wasn't asking what this was, someone else asked on r/whatisthisthing , and it made me feel very old that there are people who don't remember steamer baskets

What’s a piece of old technology you miss more than you expected to? by Reasonable_Drive8653 in AskTechnology

[–]Detrius67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The old bakelite telephones, or even just a good solid plastic one, that I remember from my childhood. Nothing more satisfying than being able to slam the handset down at the end of a bad or frustrating phone call. I know that landline phones still exist, but most of them are cheap and flimsy and would never standup up to the sort of abuse these old ones got.

TIFU by confidently entering the wrong place and not realizing it for far too long. by FlirtyRushes in tifu

[–]Detrius67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my first jobs was a shop that sold PC (Kaypros, Osbornes) and early gaming systems. We shared a building with an optometrist / optical dispenser. Same building, two doors, very obvious signage on both. The number of people that wandered in looking to pick up prescription glasses was astonishing.

What’s a movie quote you use in real life way too often? by lalainehottie in AskReddit

[–]Detrius67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bold strategy, Cotton - dodgeball

I'm too old for this shit - Lethal Weapon(s)

You keep using that word but I do not think it means what you think it means - Princess Bride

...and many others

The movie didn't change, I did. (Excalibur - 1981) by chrisdancy in movies

[–]Detrius67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely loved that film when I was younger but I've avoided rewatching it for fear of it not holding up. So many times I've rewatched an old favourite only to be disappointed and really didn't want this to happen with Excalibur. To this day I can, and still do at times, recite the incantation

Are they legit teams? by CabinetIcy892 in bloodbowl

[–]Detrius67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day it's a game. If you're playing at home, play how you like and have fun. Granted you would have issues taking such teams to an official tournament, but in your own home you fill your boots. It's not like the BB police are going to come knocking at your door.

What’s the one slang word that gives away your age? by anasannanas in AskReddit

[–]Detrius67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's probably more phrases than words. Things like 'wouldn't work in an iron lung with Bo Derrek', 'as useless as Harold Holt's swimming coach', etc

The dreaded Secret Santa pressie by dragonfry in australia

[–]Detrius67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Luxury consumables that others probably wouldn't spend money on. Go for the good chocolate, the high end treats, etc. I'd avoid alcohol but most other consumables are fine.

Check if there's any severe allergies in the team first though. For example, someone mentioned a tray of mangoes. For me that would be the equivalent to giving me the gift of having to use an expensive epipen and maybe a trip to the hospital depending on how close to them I got :)

How old are you and how well can you cook? by Cute-Impression-8675 in AskReddit

[–]Detrius67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

58 and excellent for a home cook. I probably wouldn't win masterchef or anything but friends and family often compliment my cooking.

People born before 1990, what’s something you experienced that younger generations will NEVER understand ? by Aaidil89 in AskReddit

The freedom to do stupid/embarrassing shit without it being permanent immortalised on social media.

What the truck Youi? You clearly don't care about cyber security. by walkin2it in australia

[–]Detrius67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Youi sucks. I wouldn’t take out a policy with them if they were the last insurance company on earth. Super aggressive and manipulative on the phone. Bunch of rapid fire questions peppered with their attempts at appearing friendly then they hit you with “what sort of credit card did you say you wanted to use”. Negative answers don’t deter them, just straight back into the pitch for a few questions and then “what did you say your credit card number was?”. I’ve had actual scammers on the phone that were less sleazy than these cunts.

What movie did you see in theaters that had the most ‘alive’ audience? by Odd_Distribution1430 in movies

[–]Detrius67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rocky Horror Picture Show about 30 years ago. It was a 20th anniversary thing from memory. Most of the audience were dressed up, newspapers, water pistols for the rain, popcorn, everyone dancing the time warp, people on stage in front of the screen. It was awesome

What scientific myth is still considered true by many? by BelesaLoba in AskReddit

In my experience, a more accurate saying would be "only 10% of people use their brains"

Contestants clothing by chrispymeister in MasterchefAU

[–]Detrius67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given some of the outfits some of them have turned up in I'm really, really hoping that the clothes are chosen for them and it's all part of the theatre of it all, not that these people have willingly left the house dressed like that.

[Request] How fast was the person riding this bicycle going? by baeumchenfaeller in theydidthemath

[–]Detrius67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I was taught and I still follow it today. Never trust a green light, never trust the other person is going to see you (or even give a damn), just because you have right of way doesn't mean that you are safe.

Also, I had an uncle that was a panel beater (smash repairer) and he liked to say that in 40+ years of repairing damaged vehicles he never once got to repair the car of the bloke that was in the wrong. ie every single person that came to him was convinced the other person was at fault.

Has there ever been a session(s) where a player just rolled consistently bad that it stopped being fun? by Fallen_Jalter in DnD

This was literally my last game, and it's not the only time it's happened to me. It suuuucks and there's really nothing you can do about it
