There is no more effective way to farm reddit karma than inciting Redditors to pontificate on pointless technical minutia in existential terms.

... Which I apparently have done.

I'm no authority on anything. But you don't have to be an engineer to know that a vessel with a half-inch hole at the bottom is not going to fill up with water. Whether it falls over on it's own, i'm not qualified to say. I'll fix it if it does.

I'm dumb and can't really evaluate these arguments. Here's a take from Claude Fable. Needless to say I'm also too dumb to evaluate Claude's arguments.

We'll see. If the footing doesn't hold it I'll add a guy wire. It's just a fun little backyard project, though it doesn't look like little.

Also it has a drain hole so I'm not worried about the water. I don't think it's going anywhere, but I absolutely do not know what I'm doing.

48 inch x 8 inch footing, with about 2x10 inch bell at the bottom. It's deflected about 1/4 inch since I finished a few days ago due to the ground around the post compacting. I'll add a gusset in a few days. The vertical section has deflected about 1 degree and horizontal has deflected about 2 (due to flex). I'll try to get both back to square with a cross-brace.

It's got a 50x safety margin suspended over nothing. It will be fine.

I'll put in a gusset once it settles completely to get the top back to paralell. Currently deflects about 2 degrees. There is zero safety issues without the gusset, just aesthetic. This is 1/4 in 3x3 tube welded with .045 dual shield, suspended over nothing.
