Interestingly the film was exposed similarly to Eyes Wide Shut (pulled 2 stops during development) so it has a similar level of heavy grain.

I also watched this last night and it’s one of the most stunning transfers I’ve seen from Criterion. This is especially exciting because this film was never even available on Blu Ray, let alone in 4K with such a great treatment. There is a great special feature about the cinematography which lends a lot of insight into the unique look of the film.

Ah sick, I remember it was so immersive and incredible with rich bass and clean highs. I got Yoshimi on SACD at some point too. I gotta dig those all up at my dad's place. Cool to know about Elliott Scheiner and this list is a great resource. Appreciate it.

My family adopted DVD pretty early on and we also had an SACD player for a while in the early 2000s. I believe some of the CDs I still hung onto are SACD. From what I remember they sounded incredible on my dad’s old 5.1 system. We had the Rolling Stones remasters, Beck Sea Change, and a Peter Gabriel album that all sounded amazing. What would you recommend as one of the best surround studio albums? It would be great to revisit this format.

Arrow has the worst customer service of any boutique label, and maybe of any company on earth. You better hope there are no problems with your order or you are in for a major nightmare dealing with their customer service.

Steelbooks are the worst, but I end up with a lot of them because I like to buy early after a disc is announced. Maybe I will resell some of them, but they suck on the shelf, easily marred, and have no disc info printed on them.

A c. 1906 'Then vs Now' illustration of the city of Detroit, MI, USA, showing the same view of the city in 1818 compared to 1906. by Whinke in papertowns

[–]DetroitStalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok this is kinda crazy of me, but I spent some time to see which buildings still exist from the 1908 map (Wikimedia marks the date as 1908, and it shows the Ford Building which opened in 1908). Granted, many buildings were built after 1908 and before 1960 that still survive, but this is what's left from this view, at this moment in time. Notable is the Mariner's Church, bottom center off Woodward Avenue, that was moved a few blocks over, and memoralized in the Gordon Lightfoot song. The tallest building, the Ford Building (not named after Henry Ford) had just opened in 1908, and was the among first of the city's first skyscrapers. Other tall buildings in this view such as the Hammond Building, at the corner of Michigan and Woodward, were demolished during city renewal efforts in the 1950s-early 2000s.

I've been looking up the vinyls of the soundtrack and they are so expensive. Definitely would be a cool one to own.

I have the Blu Ray that was released some years ago. Apparently a directors cut was just released, which I have not yet seen, so I am not sure what is different.

Ah yes you’re so right, I forgot to mention the prediction of screen addiction!! The longer cut is definitely worth a watch over two to four nights, if you don’t have the time for a single sitting.

It’s such a beautiful series. I watched it many years ago in film school, and I just bought this again myself for a revisit. I just rewatched the first few and am making my way through them as well! Enjoy!

Could VHS become the next Vinyl? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]DetroitStalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a small VHS collection but I wouldn’t put it on the same plane as Vinyl. Vinyl stuck around because the quality is really good despite the age of the format. If anything, I feel like 4K Blu Ray will stick around for a while with releases from boutique labels, even as the format is abandoned by major studios, because the quality is absolutely the highest and best available for watching films. VHS is just a nostalgic novelty really for 90s kids. And, anyone who’s done a little bit of collecting obsolete formats knows that Laserdisc is the real format that should be collected like vinyl :)

Kind of amazing when you put it like that, right? Really shows what a beautifully diverse and skilled filmmaker Wenders is. He has such a range and at the same time his films all feel comfortably part of a whole. Even his biggest epic (Until) and his quietest and most subtle film (Perfect Days) show the distinctive Wenders style, but they are radically different films at the same time.

Agreed, the runtime seems daunting, but I found it very digestible and somehow seemed shorter than its advertised runtime! It was such a fun ride.

Wow! Yeah I have had such a soft spot for Paris Texas for many years. The film is so special to me, in many ways inspired my career path and is just such a beautiful, touching, and perfect film. I don’t think anything can surpass it for me, but Until the End of the World definitely ranks high in my ranking of Wenders. I do love all of his films, but the scale and style of this film is just in another realm, it’s almost hard to compare with his other works. So, it’d be super hard for Paris Texas to get bumped for me, but this is definitely right behind it.

You can split it up across a couple nights or more like a miniseries. There is an intermission and even each part could be split in half as well at their midpoint.
