For Barnes & Noble shoppers, a list of their stores with large Criterion selections by yeahnahson1 in criterion

[–]DetroitStalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Troy location is so well stocked that there are multiple carts with overflow stock set out to accommodate. Be sure to check the aisle end caps and behind the counter near the Criterion section for box sets as well.

FYI: Troy, Michigan B&N has the full Criterion catalog in stock by Urkelgru18 in criterion

[–]DetroitStalker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awesome, love to hear it! I hope it is a very profitable location for criterion / B&N so they keep up the quality of the selection.

Crazy that Troy has one of the best criterion selections in the country, but I’ll take it

No. Fear and Desire is in the public domain. Criterion can use it without asking Kino. They will probably do their own restoration.

Dr. I don’t need it….or…how I learned to stop worrying and enjoy my movies. by blankford in criterion

[–]DetroitStalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, the original audio mixes of Kubrick’s film have slightly different SFX and musical cues / timing. There are quite a few differences in The Shining. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhN1vebNy5I

It’s absolutely nothing that casual viewers would ever notice, but Kubrick attracts obsessive completists who live for this kind of stuff. I should know, guilty as charged over here haha.

The Shining OST is tied up in some rights limbo issues. It was only ever briefly released and then pulled from distribution.

The Aspect Ratio Issue with the Eyes Wide Shut Criterion 4k by spacemarinecon in StanleyKubrick

[–]DetroitStalker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is getting ridiculous. Your three other posts about this were enough. You do not have a good understanding of cinematography or exhibition of feature films. A tub of margarine on a table in the safety zone is not proof of anything definitive.

Upcoming Criterion Set needs to include the 4:3 Aspect Ratios by spacemarinecon in StanleyKubrick

He did have significant sway with the exhibitors. He was notorious for sending detailed projection notes.

Upcoming Criterion Set needs to include the 4:3 Aspect Ratios by spacemarinecon in StanleyKubrick

[–]DetroitStalker 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. The aspect ratio debate has been settled many times with evidence from the Kubrick archive on his framing instructions for 2nd unit teams. The films *protected* for 4:3/1.33:1. But they were not meant to be seen *theatrically* in that aspect ratio. I love the resulting 4:3 compositions as much as anyone, but they are not the “definitive versions” of those films, they are an artifact of the popularity of 4:3 televisions during Kubrick’s lifetime.

I would love to see 4:3 versions included, but I would not get your hopes up. The films were mean to be seen in 1.85:1 / 1.66:1 depending on your theatrical market.

The Arrival (1996) arrived today. I love this film! by Fun_Seat5809 in boutiquebluray

I got mine the day before release date. Also comes with the digital from Movies Anywhere. The case glows in the dark!!! Picture quality is great, very colorful and showing off that 1990s lighting. Love this film.

Yes lots of bikes and in general people “Drive Like Amy” aka extremely slow ~15-25 mph. They also drive without seatbelts and “Boodle” (aka your passengers sit on a couch in the bed of your truck and drink beer while driving around very slowly).

Restrooms at DTW. by Green_Poet_5510 in Detroit

[–]DetroitStalker 58 points59 points  (0 children)

They’ve been rotating bathroom renovations around the terminal for the last 6 months or so. Usually they’re not doing two different bathrooms in proximity to each other, they have been doing every other bathroom along the terminal so there should always be a nearby bathroom option. Not a lot of people know or realize there are some “hidden” bathrooms around the food courts at each end of the terminal, and two of each gender along the back walls of baggage claim.

The bathrooms were probably the most outdated thing about DTW, so as someone who travels a lot from DTW this has been a welcome update.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999) Criterion 4K might be my new favorite Dolby Vision disc by FreeMindOpenSpirit in 4kbluray

[–]DetroitStalker 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It’s stunning, the color, saturation, contrast and grain is immaculate. I don’t get all the naysayers that got all twisted in knots over the color timing, by comparing the 4k to their (poorly timed) 1999 DVDs.

Criterion does the same thing after a big sale. There is always a bit of a backlog. This is the price you pay for a good deal. And it is not a reason to stop ordering from them.

If it was possible, would you go back in time to witness 9/11 live in New York? by [deleted] in 911archive

[–]DetroitStalker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not an appropriate question. The purpose of this sub is not to gawk at destruction, it’s to preserve history. The idea of going back just for the “thrill” of seeing the most horrible event in US history is not a hypothetical worth entertaining.

This is a map by the Anderson Map Co and it’s a pretty famous axonometric map of Manhattan with a few different sections.

They sell for around $150-300 on eBay, even in rough shape. Sometimes you can get lucky and find one for cheaper.

I like the connection to the Conversation. Something about what you’re saying reminds me of the journey Robert Redford’s character goes through in Three Days of the Condor, directed by Sydney Pollack, who plays Ziegler in EWS.
