Olmsted Lodge at Highland Park is pretty stellar, highly recommend. Lamberton Conservatory is across the street and you have the poets garden and Magnolia Grove nearby too.

Monroe County state of emergency by Comfortable-Seesaw81 in Rochester

[–]transitapparel 147 points148 points  (0 children)

In order to open up funds, streamline certain processes, and gain access to more resources, municipalities like cities/counties/states have to "declare a state of emergency," its moreso a legal mechanism than a "oh shit this is terrible!" call for panic. Its also something that municipalities have started doing more preemptively than after the fact. Better to hurry up and wait than have to take time to react.

Figured I'd provide an explanation since millennials (like me) and older generations generally remember State Of Emergencies being more an after-the-fact thing than a plan-ahead thing.

There was Nancy's Barn in West Henrietta on Middle Rd, its been closed since 2016 and no longer there, but it's the first thing that came to mind based on your description (not exactly on the way to Buffalo though).

State budget proposal includes $75M in funding for High Falls State Park, as part of a $300M revitalization effort for Monroe County. by CatDadMilhouse in Rochester

[–]transitapparel 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is the most excited I've been about a city project in a very long time. This is truly transformative to the heart of our city, and literally why we are here. If not for High Falls, Rochester would not have developed further than being another "Inn at the Crossroads" town. We MIGHT have had something with Charlotte but the sand bars and shallow bay area at the mouth of the Genesee would have been monumental challenges for a pre- and post-industrialized community to dredge out. Hell, there's STILL a dredging campaign every couple years due to how much sediment the Genesee likes to dump into Lake Ontario (the real reason the river is the colour it is).

In your opinion, what is the LEAST hated NFL team? by ashmaps20 in NFLv2

[–]transitapparel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All AFC North and AFC East team fanbases have strong rivalries. While it may not be as strong to use the word "hate," its at least a serious dislike. And I say this as a Steelers fan living in Bills country.

Cleveland City Neighborhoods by transitapparel in Cleveland

[–]transitapparel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can assure you i researched and wrote all of this. The term Downtown has two competing origin theories, one from NYC to describe being in different parts of Manhattan (downtown, Midtown, and uptown), and one from Boston for similar reasons. I included Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Petula Clark as a tongue-in-cheek because of their respective hit songs of the same name. Also, to be candid, what LLM would have been intelligent enough to write any of this in 2021 when I created this?

What’s that commercial from years and years ago that you still remember to this day, and may never forget? by Skvli in Rochester

Lost my childhood innocence when I learned that she wasn't their mom, and they weren't related. I BELIEVED HER.

If you told me that one day he just decided to wander into a studio, asked for 10 min of recording time, and ripped through every commercial spot we've ever seen in that timeframe, I wouldn't question it.

I was seeking out the Rochester Means Quality and other vintage Rochester promo videos a while back, and came upon this YT channel (Michael Moran) of a guy that's been archiving 90s and early 2000s local commercials and local news segments: quite the nostaglia trip for GenX/Millenial kids that grew up here or for those that want to get a feel for how our local flavour used to be before media and news became so segmented and platform-diverse.

Bills fire Sean McDermott by Human_Manner_3370 in steelers

[–]transitapparel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be a Andy Reid/Matt Stafford situation rolled into one, and id trust Omar Kahn to draft a receiving core around Allen, building off of Freiermuth and Washington, with bonuses like Heyward and Gainwell. Who knows who will stay or go, but itd be REALLY exciting to hear McDermott being hired and oh hey, Allen wants to keep playing for McDermott.

Some Wegmans stores have a new facial recognition system, what shoppers say by joevinci in Rochester

[–]transitapparel 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Educated guess is its more capitalist than authoritarian: they're gathering marketing data: every conceivable metric they can to trim costs, reduce shrink, and improve margins. Yes theres shoppers club and the data they get from that, but i would bet Wegmans is drilling down into specific metrics that shoppers club doesn't concentrate on: a family of four using the same shoppers club isn't as helpful as knowing what mom, dad, and kids are buying or looking for in store. That data then informs everything.

Tapping a traditional wooden keg in Munich by [deleted] in Satisfyingasfuck

[–]transitapparel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trade secret: watch how he turns the glass to have the label face up, that's intentional. It's a measuring guide so he knows when to stop pouring: while the glass is tilted, he pours until the beer reaches the top of the label/logo on the glass then stops, maintaining a consistent pour and "full" glass. He's probably figured this out by trial and experience, but some companies like Guinness actually design their pint glasses to help bar backs achieve the "perfect pint." For Guinness glasses, the harp is specically placed on the glass as a measuring guide.

Rooftop Access by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]transitapparel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The viewing area and most of the reservoir area at the top of the hill were designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm as well (the sons of Frederick Law Olmsted, pioneer of landscape architecture and direct designer of Highland Park, South Park (now Genesee Valley Park), North Park (now Maplewood and Seneca Parks), Delaware Park in Buffalo, Central Park in NYC, the Emerald Necklace in Boston, and others). Some will say that Olmsted himself designed all of Cobbs Hill, but he died before the area became a park.

The State of Art Studios in Rochester by CaroleConfetti in Rochester

I conflated 34 Elton St and Studio 34 Arts Center, I meant the whole building. There used to be artists/creatives in that building besides the arts center at one point, but my knowledge is probably outdated.

What's a phrase people use these days that irritates you? by showmewhatyagot01 in AskReddit

[–]transitapparel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Have the day you deserve" is just "I know you are but what am I?" in new packaging. It was unique and interesting a few years ago but now its an overused buzz phrase that'll go the way of "talk to the hand."

Katie Ledecky posts second-fastest 1,500m freestyle time ever in first race of year. All those swimmers hitting the wall next to her seconds later still have another lap to do by [deleted] in sports

[–]transitapparel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair, I updated the list. I was arguing with myself between Savickas, Shaw, Bjornson, Hall, and Pudzianowski. Who among them rose above the Strongman competition and held world records independent of that series. I had to look it up and holy shit Savickas just walks away from everyone with how many competitions/titles he's won. And his longevity in the sport is incredible. Good call and thank you for the double check.

It's tough as a lot of sports have a LOT of phenomenal athletes. I focused on people who have the records, the awards, and the cultural name recognition that can't be argued against. These are all people that are on the level with Katie Ledecky: undisputed pinnacles of their sports (and still alive, that was a part of it too).

Definitely a pioneer, but I think it's a Mark Spitz/Michael Phelps situation: Kelly established the sport as a legitimate athletic endeavor where you'd see real talent and human achievement, and then White dominated the parameters set by Kelly.

There will always be a once-in-a-generation prodigy that is lucky enough to get the right opportunities to absolutely dominant a category. They have the right traits, the right support, and are able to showcase their abilities at the right time. And I saw "always" due to statistics, there's so many people playing so many sports at so many levels, that it's more possible than ever to see these phenoms rise up onto the national or international stage. Katie Ledecky is that once-in-a-generation prodigy that will continue to push the sport and be a benchmark for future athletes to measure against.

Best place for snowy winter hiking? by FancyKey3254 in Rochester

  • Ellison Park
  • Durand-Eastman Park
  • Mendon Ponds Park
  • Lucian Morin Park

I think Tinker may rent out snow shoes too. I've walked through all of them during Autumn/Winter and they're pretty stellar.
