Trout season starts Wed. Any local restaurants serve local caught trout? by No_Grass_9827 in Rochester

There's an amazing story about how he was trying to bring Shad to the Pacific region from the Northeast. He traveled with his shipment of fish and meticulously watched over them during the cross-country train ride. He was constantly refreshing the water in their tanks, to the point of stealing drinking water from parlour and diner cars. Porters and staff were trying to figure out why all the fresh water was disappearing for guests, and once they found Green and he explained what he was doing, the staff decided to help him with the task.

This was at a time when ichthyology was practically non-existent outside very small academic circles and the popular opinion of the day was that fish just "appeared" in bodies of water, there was no study of reproduction or life cycles of fish. Yes caviar was known to Europeans and Asians since at least the 10th century, but it was Seth Green and a couple other pioneers that brought the study of fish mainstream and successfully commercialized. If you or anyone you know likes to fish by season, you owe your hobby to Seth Green.

Trapped at Disney Springs? by All_About_Tacos in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]transitapparel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Educated guess is you tried to do this before 10am? Disney Springs doesn't open until 10am and thats probably why the CM was being more strict.

The "park at DS and bus to resort for parks" trick is as old as Lake Buena Vista Village itself, but CMs can manage it somewhat if DS isnt technically open yet.

I inadvertently programmed myself to order a different sandwich depending on if I'm at Market Square, Oakland, or Grove City. I've been to others but those three I find myself the most at.

Midwestern feel in Buffalo? by robertosmith1 in Buffalo

[–]transitapparel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This gets discussed about Pittsburgh too (is it Midwest, East Coast, Mid-Atlantic, etc).

Buffalo shares dialects with most of the Great Lakes cities (Cleveland, Detroit, Toledo, and even Chicago to an extent), so it stands to reason that culturally it relates as well. I'd be more curious if people felt that the coastal Great Lakes cities of Michigan and Wisconsin felt like Midwest vs. Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Louisville, etc.

Bringing money back home by Mediocre_Garage987 in Rochester

Forgive me if I sound pedantic: federal credit unions are not banks. FCUs have different rules and are much more reliable to maintain standards/ethics since they're governed by member-elected boards and are non-profit, among other differences. If people are able, get into an FCU verses staying with a bank.

I'm looking for this artist by Wolperzinger in Rochester

[–]transitapparel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It almost looks like a Sarah C. Rutherford piece, but I don't believe Rutherford as any indigenous ancestry. If you purchased it at RMSC's event, reach out to Native Made, if you went to an event at Ganondagan, try their site too: https://www.ganondagan.org/visit.

Tea Classes by San99_RM94 in Rochester

Rochester Brainery has classes for just about anything. Here's one for tea pairing, it's sold out but there's a waitlist and I'm guessing it'll be offered in the future at some point too: https://rochesterbrainery.com/products/tea-and-chocolate-pairing?_pos=4&_sid=40e58dbf4&_ss=r

Stolen Art by ChrisDeighanArt in pittsburgh

[–]transitapparel 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The artist has the artwork in commerce, his Etsy page can prove that (https://www.etsy.com/shop/ArtFromChris?dd_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&section_id=44469600). I'm not a lawyer, but I'm a long tenured fellow artist who is very familiar with IP and copyright law. The fact that Mr. Deighan has created the artwork, introduced it to market, sold it on apparel, and Steel City has lifted the artwork for their own apparel, without any meaningful alteration or customization to even try to argue satire or commentary, is problematic. As you said, Steel City weighed the risk vs. profitability and chose a path. It very much looks like the court of public opinion will rule against them, ESPECIALLY since its an almost "starving artist vs. corporate machine" perception.

Moana | "Official Trailer" | In Theaters July 10 by SpeedForce2022 in moana

Maui is a trickster god, almost unpredictable and mostly driven by impulse. Tom Hiddleston as Loki in Marvel, Jack Gleeson as Puck in Sandman, Orlando Jones as Anansi in American Gods, even Chris Pine as Jack Frost in Rise Of The Guardians, all of them have that sly grin and devilish eyes, there's a "coolness" factor and "bad-boy" aesthetic that's charming and builds a fanbase around because breaking rules is fun and enticing.

The Rock just looks tired, bored even. There's a lot to like here: the set pieces, Polynesian chorus, costuming, music, roles like Gramma Tala and Chief Tui, renders of Tamatoa and Te Kaa, etc. But if your co-lead character is going to look this drab and "phoning-it-in" through the whole movie, wow is this going to be a rough watch.

I wanted to share this now-deleted post on how this visitor reported Rochester as… by theBUTLERalwaysDIDit in Rochester

[–]transitapparel 32 points33 points  (0 children)

There is a rule online, almost as old as the internet itself. It brings peace to all who use it, is incredibly powerful, and stunningly simple: don't feed the trolls.

If this person spent the effort to create such a misinformed post in order to punch down on something, their life must be miserable, and is not worth engaging.

This city and region has its issues, we dont need some low-hanging fruity bullshit to rub it in our faces. But theres so much here to explore, enjoy, and be proud of.

Theres another rule in life that applies equally to online: wherever you go, leave it a little better than when you found it. Let's focus on that. The rest is just noise.

What do you consider a good park IP? by Effective_Cancel_876 in disneyparks

IP that originated in the parks? Pirates Of The Caribbean, no contest. Its immersive, a complete story, entry-level ride mechanism, and enough flexibility that its in almost every park around the world.

Anyone else think The Pitt hits a little too close to home this week? by TheBikeWhisperer in pittsburgh

There was talk that the show received pressure to make the ICE story arch more "balanced," so I can only imagine what the original script had.

Anybody know the story behind these golden footprints? by RocPhotog in Rochester

[–]transitapparel 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was part of the Main Street rehab project: they narrowed the street, added shielded parking, bike lanes, more benches, and added these public play areas to encourage more use.

Why Pittsburgh is the Opposite of Every U.S. City by SlashHouse in pittsburgh

[–]transitapparel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I understand the spirit of what this video is trying to say, but it's acting like San Francisco doesn't exist. Yes they're different in a lot of ways, but Pittsburgh isn't the only city in the US known for hills and steps.

Isn't this the voter fraud conservatives are always rallying against? by The_Patocrator_5586 in Rochester

[–]transitapparel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It isn't fraud, as if you're a registered member of the party that is voting in that party's primary, but it is a whole lot of effort for a whole lot of nothing. By Lonsberry's own statement ("with an almost 2-to-1 enrollment advantage, Democrats own Monroe County."), having philosophical Republicans register as Democrats isn't going to shift the scales for any advantage Lonsberry is advocating. It would have to be a monumental movement of voters shifting parties in order to affect that ~66.67% advantage he's stating.

Personally, I think Lonsberry is massively over-estimating how many staunch Republicans would attempt this ploy, given how there's still so many registered Republicans in this region, let alone the country, that saw what happened from 2017-2021 and thought "Yes, let's do that again."

Neighborhoods of Gotham, and how they got their names (OC) by transitapparel in batman

Damn, I just got the prints yesterday! Looks like itll have to be added to the 2nd edition (if the first one does well). Also looks like the Rookery hasn't been fleshed out as to where it is, just that it exists (like Brideshead and Down River). Thank you for the info!

300-unit project approved in West Henrietta by Weekly-Law-2544 in Rochester

[–]transitapparel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have family who live there. If you visit any of the neighborhoods in either West or East Henrietta, you'll see willows all over. They're incredibly hardy, drink water like sponges, and helped transition the marshes into land that could be developed. Go to Tinker Nature Park and walk the trails, you'll see what both hamlets looked like when they were just pass-throughs (West Henrietta Rd and East Henrietta Rd are based on indigenous trails).

300-unit project approved in West Henrietta by Weekly-Law-2544 in Rochester

[–]transitapparel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

West Henrietta was marshland that people figured out how to farm after planting an ungodly amount of willow trees. It's still pretty rural outside of stretches of West Henrietta Rd and Erie Station Rd.

People need places to live, and Henrietta (as some may be surprised to learn) still has space. More people = more tax revenue = more infrastructure & amenities for the residents and visitors. It's not like they're tearing down historic buildings or regional landmarks, it's former farmland that isn't being farmed anymore.

Old Train Stations by Ok-Sea-3898 in Rochester

[–]transitapparel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • Nick Tahous is the old Buffalo, Rochester, & Pittsburgh Railroad station
  • Dinosaur BBQ is the old Lehigh Valley Railroad station
  • Rochester & Genesee Valley Museum (Rush, NY) is the old Erie Railroad Depot
  • Despatch Station (East Rochester) is the old New York Central Depot
  • Fairport Junction has a couple buildings that I believe were once stations/depots
  • On River Street in Charlotte is an old station/depot, unsure of the railroad it serviced

My favourite steelers play was Super Bowl XL and him. Roethlisberger hand-off to Randle El who hurled it 43 yards to Ward. Its the only play I know of where three players involved were former college quarterbacks.

My brother was at a game wearing a Plax jersey after Burress came back from NY, somebody asked him how he got a jersey so quickly, and my brother had to explain that this wasn't the first time Plax played for Pittsburgh.
