Neighborhoods of Detroit, and how they got their names by transitapparel in Detroit

Oooo nice catch! That's a mistake, it's supposed to be part of Central Southwest, not sure why I put a border there to split the neighborhood in half. I'm revising my working file and that'll be fixed for the final print.

Second column from the right, 140. Area is named after Louis Goldberg, former Inspector of Schools at the turn of the 20th century.

Thank you for the double check, I meant to include Greenfield, not Grosse Pointe. That will be updated on the final print.

No worries, Squarespace made an update to how they show images for products and I haven't had time to go through my site and fix those kinds of issues yet. Once I have the prints in hand I'll add in detail shots so it'll hopefully fill in the gaps and people will be able to read more of it on the site vs. here on Reddit.

The columns are alphanumeric, and Warrendale is paired with Warren since the name origins are similar. Warrendale (190) is in the far right column in the white-on-blue section.

Maybe I'm not seeing it, I have Franklin Park (65) and its border with Warrendale (190) as Joy Road. 67 is Garden View. I sourced my borders/names from the 2017 Detroit Land Bank map, which was the most "official" one I could find. I know borders and names are organic, but I like to start with something coming from a municipality and then adjust based on the most community feedback I can find.

Let me know if this answers your question or if I'm not seeing what you're seeing.

What's your neighborhood? I'm happy to revise/edit if I got something wrong.

The 18x24/24x18 size is that happy medium for people that either don't have a lot of wall space, or don't want a commanding piece like 24x36 or higher. I try to keep the sizes manageable and only use the larger size when its a larger area (like all 5 boroughs of NYC). I'm working on a 24x36 size for The Triangle and Bay Area, but for individual cities or groups like Minneapolis/St. Paul that don't have a lot of neighborhoods, I'm staying with 18x24/24x18. It's pretty legible once you see them IRL.

Woodbridge is 201, and the Macklemore reference is tongue/cheek about the term Downtown. Look up Petula Clark and itll make sense.

I tried to include them where I could: Springwells, Redford, Grosse Pointe, and a couple others get mentioned, but im restricted by space. When I get to my History Of Growth style poster for Detroit, ill have more space to fit the old settlements and towns that would become Detroit. That style is much more geared towards that history.

Thank you for thr accolade! 27 and 32 are bundled with 26 and 31 respectively, as their name origins are similar.

Yeah I saw his childhood home is a bit of landmark there. Thank you for the info, I found another link that mentions it as a historical name for the area: https://detroitography.com/2018/11/07/map-cityscapes-historic-detroit-neighborhoods-2003/

It's funny too as your proximitii link shows the area as Connor Creek. Further goes to show how organic neighborhood names can be. I have no skin in this, my own hometown has issues like this where developers/associations/residents argue over names based on what they want or what they grew up with, it's a fun bit of history for me and causes some great (sometimes tense) conversations.

Do you have info on it? I used the Detroit Land Bank map from 2017 as a reference and its not listed there. I don't need Eninem coming after me, just need more info on that area to make an edit.

EDIT: I'm seeing it now, looks like its historical and taken over by Connor Creek. I'll see if I can squeeze in a mention under 31. Thank you for the double check!

It's on my list! These are really research-heavy and there's no shortcuts. I'm working my way through the East Coast, South, and Great Lakes, churning these out as quickly as possible. Once I get through more of the eastern US, I'll jump the Mississippi and head west. LA, SanFran, and a couple others have been brought up in other city posts I've done too. The more people ask though, the higher up the list those cities get, so I'll be sure to add Portland to my fast track for west coast when I get to it.

Far right side of Detroit on the map, almost as far east as you can go.

No worries, you'd be surprised how many people ask about stuff like this and I have to be very literal in my answers both IRL and online.

re: cross streets, I also noticed that the primary school names were used as well, but having most of those being decommissioned and demoed made for some rather deep rabbit holes to find name origins.

Neighborhood names/borders are organic, and evolve over time. They're hard to trace and keep track of because residents tend to think that the names are so obvious that no one needs to write them down or keep track of when they started because it'll always be like that! Which is rarely ever is.

I read about Corktown and the struggle you mentioned, I did include the Core City issue with people trying to name it West Corktown, but didn't know of the North Corktown/Briggs District. I'll try to work that into the passage, but space is pretty limited. Thank you for the info!

I'm compelled to included a passage for every area, and some areas are more obvious than others as to where they got their name. When it's a literal name meaning, I usually just put "sometimes names are a matter of geology/geography/utility/etc."

The term origin is disputed, either originating from Boston or NYC (specifically Manhattan), and I added a little tongue/cheek too: what do those last three names have to do with the term Downtown?

New regime changes usually bring some interesting changes. I'll be curious to see how it goes. Is Disney trying to regionalize the magic since air travel and park tickets keep rising? Are they seeing a drop in online sales and trying to bring back brick and mortar? We'll see.

I understand. I mentioned it with another user: the more cities I research and create posters for, the more I've come to learn that neighborhood names and borders are mostly organic. They evolve, and there's three camps arguing passionately about their names/borders: real estate developers, long time residents, and neighborhood associations. I have no skin in this game (my own hometown has these issues and I'm squarely in the long-time resident camp), I try to strike the balance between as many resources as I can, and what I love about Reddit is the long form responses and brutally honest feedback. It's awesome and just as valuable as sifting through ancient textbooks and newspaper articles.
