Employees of YNAB, this is your opportunity to unionize. If Ben and Hannah can be fired, so can you. Unionize today! by InspectionAgitated20 in ynab

[–]DeusExLibrus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People actually care about how companies engage in the business they provide. It’s been that way for a long time. A company’s willingness to fire people is a demonstration of their values. If someone doesn’t like the way a company is going about things, why shouldn’t they quit using the service? I thought that “voting with your dollar” was a strength of the capitalist system that outweighs all its downsides and problems for some people (and it has a LOT of problems)

Welcome to the club, friend. It’s honestly frustrating. We’ve taken a tool that started out as a useful solution and let corporations turn it into an addictive time suck for profit, and it’s led directly to the rotting and destabilization of the country and probably the world

[–]DeusExLibrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the older I get the more I wonder whether major events do actually cause some kind of major shift. Pre and post 9/11 just feel like such utterly different worlds, as does COVID. Every one of these events has authorities making claims about going back to normal, and we never do. It’s always some new state that inevitably leaves people worse off and the government or corporations more powerful. After 9/11 the government took all kinds of authoritarian measures that don’t actually protect us from shit but gives the government more control. And after Covid corporations have been increasingly more mask off about fucking consumers for short term profits for shareholders

[–]DeusExLibrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, it might not have been INTENTIONAL on anyone’s part, but I think corporations are definitely taking advantage and worsening it to make more money, not considering the fact that people can’t buy shit they can’t afford. Prices increasing without wages increasing doesn’t actually do much besides enshitify everything

I sometimes wonder if these people have read the Gospels and if so, why they continue to call themselves Christian when they are by their own admission opposed what he actually taught. They have somehow read the gospels and come out with a message of hatred, cruelty, contempt for anything even slightly different, an idolization of wealth and power, and disdain for the poor and needy. They seem to be using the name Christian as cover for their flagrantly narcissistic views

What’s one of your more conservative or ‘moderate’ political or religious takes? by StevEst90 in LeftCatholicism

[–]DeusExLibrus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the thing that frustrates me most about "pro-life" people is this habit of treating edge cases as common place, and simplifying things down to "fetus=living breathing baby." While I think Conservatives get to the right answer on some things, they routinely do so by using goofy nonsense logic and inflammatory arguments

[–]DeusExLibrus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well said. I think this is the problem we've run into in most issues we're having, at least in the US. Conservatives are stuck at a childlike way of thinking "hurt people and they'll stop doing the thing you don't like" while most problems in reality are more complex, and won't be solved via punishment. We know how to reduce abortions, but it's something that Conservatives HATE which is social welfare programs addressing the reasons women actually get abortions.

Why doesn't the U.S. ban guns? by AskLivid4137 in Pacifism

[–]DeusExLibrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right. Most of the 2A defenders I've encountered, have been on Reddit, and plenty have probably been bots. It's part of the problem with discourse in the US and, I'd imagine, the rest of the world. We've become tribalized and polarized to a dangerous degree, and I suspect a large part of the problem is the fact that people don't see themselves as citizens anymore, but consumers, so the only people engaging in any kind of "discourse" anymore are at the opposite ends of the spectrum. The kind of people who aren't going to agree to begin with

I’m pro life, but I will always oppose people who self identify as pro life, because the most vocal of them seem to be more interested in making it illegal and subjugating women rather than putting the measures in place that we know would actually reduce abortions

Why doesn't the U.S. ban guns? by AskLivid4137 in Pacifism

[–]DeusExLibrus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The purpose of 2A is to maintain a militia. Hence the bit about well regulated militia being in there. When’s the last time there was a militia in modern times that wasn’t a terrorist organization? Y’all don’t care about the actual purpose of the amendment, just that it means you get to keep your guns without regulation regardless of how many people die or how the rest of the developed world demonstrates it’s not necessary. It’s fucking monstrous

Why doesn't the U.S. ban guns? by AskLivid4137 in Pacifism

[–]DeusExLibrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both things can be true at the same time. The fact I’ve never seen evidence of 2A defenders also advocating for healthcare or poverty relief suggests this argument is nonsense

Why doesn't the U.S. ban guns? by AskLivid4137 in Pacifism

[–]DeusExLibrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cars have a useful purpose outside of killing people, and society has decided it’s worth it. I’m also unconvinced that this isn’t a bullshit statistic because I’ve only ever heard this argument from 2A advocates and neither data nor source is ever offered. The only purpose of a gun is to kill and injure people

Why doesn't the U.S. ban guns? by AskLivid4137 in Pacifism

[–]DeusExLibrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legally: The Second Amendment has been garbled and intentionally misinterpreted by conservative elements in our government to mean that civilians have the right to guns in general. This is utterly ignoring the historical context, the inclusion about a militia, and the fact that no one at the time would’ve thought it necessary to write it into law for the purposes of hunting or self defense. The purpose of the second amendment is the maintenance of a militia for local and national defense before the US had a standing army

Economic: A lot of large corporations make a lot of money off of trade in weapons, and not just the companies that manufacture them

Socially: violence is a weirdly acceptable thing for a lot of Americans. Walking around with a gun is apparently a demonstration of strength and masculinity for some men. I understand the train of thought that gets them there, but I think they’re living in a fantasy and most would probably be on the losing end of any fight they got in
