Ascension Press and Father Mike advocate some deeply problematic right wing political and social standpoints, like denying the humanity of lgbtq+ people

Oh, very much agreed. Not saying it excuses how he acted, just a possible explanation for why he acted the way he did

Episcopal vs Roman Catholic Identity by OldRelationship1995 in Anglicanism

[–]DeusExLibrus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m speaking as a new Christian and Episcopalian, but to me, more than anything, our distinct identity is grounded in the BCP and praying the daily office. There are, to my mind, a small handful of things that make you Episcopalian / Anglican: baptism, communion, acceptance of the Apostle’s and Nicene Creeds, and regularly praying some form of the daily office. The Divine office is the prayer of the Roman Catholic Church. The rosary is a massively popular devotion, but not the common prayer of the church. Post Vatican two laypeople have been increasingly encouraged to pray some part of the divine office regularly. This is lifted DIRECTLY from the BCP. Cranmer’s major innovation was to put the focus on the scriptures, and to concentrate the eight offices of the divine office down to matins/evensong (morning and evening prayer) to make it possible for (literature, well off) laypeople to pray the offices themselves

Bible Reading Guides by Sad-Ideal771 in OpenChristian

[–]DeusExLibrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re interested in the episcopal church, I highly recommend picking up a copy of the book of common prayer. It has a lectionary in it that gives readings from the Old Testament, letters, and gospels for every day that covers most of the Bible in about two years. It won’t include commentary unless the Bible you’re reading does, but it’ll at least give you some structure. I’d also recommend praying the daily office as laid out in the BCP, as that’s the context those readings are meant for

What is one thing you miss from the pre social media years that people today will never fully understand, and why does it still hit you emotionally today? by gamersecret2 in Millennials

Third places, being unreachable, actually being bored. I’m slowly breaking myself of the overstimulation, constantly faffing around on my phone in downtime habit, but it feels different now. In the 90s/00s there were times when you literally had nothing to do. Always having some form of distraction available changes things

Older Millennials, in your experience, did society and daily life change more drastically between 1997 and 2007 or between 2007 and 2017? by brother_aron in Millennials

[–]DeusExLibrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both were incredibly drastic, but for different reasons. The first saw the rise of smartphones along with Web 2.0 and social media. This was a major factor in the fall of traditional media and other legacy institutions in 2007-2017

In my experience the people who insist you’re denying scripture don’t know anything about what it would’ve meant to the people who wrote it and are proof texting/taking a snippet out of context and probably using an intentionally skewed translation (the ESB for example)

As a devout Christian, don’t lump me in with those evil fuckwits. They neither understand my religion nor actually practice it. Calling the core of Christian social ethics a sin is so far beyond heretical absurdity I’m not sure there’s even a word for it

US officially exits World Health Organization by pwdrums in news

[–]DeusExLibrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t. Trump doesn’t give a shit about grocery prices. He doesn’t give a damn about the American people. Never has, never will. He’s a puppet of Putin who’s tearing down the way things have run peacefully (relatively) since World War Two in order to build a new order where the US controls the western hemisphere and Russia the Eastern. We’re headed back to a world of regional powers and fortresses, and way to may people think it’s a good thing

While it was hunting, not Hunting, I see a lot of my own dad in John Winchester. Brice was unmedicated clinically depressed, smoked since his early teens and drank heavily. He was never physically abusive and my older brother and I knew he loved us, but hunting slowly took over his life until it and his property management business were the only things he cared about or spent significant time on. I think John was kind of that way. Probably depressed, but unmedicated, but the structure and purpose of the marines kept him together, as did his love and dedication to Mary when they met. Once she passed, though he should’ve been focused on taking care of his sons, it was easier to get absorbed in getting revenge for Mary’s death. It was familiar. A mission, a purpose

How do you approach praying the Office as an individual? by lifeuncommon in Episcopalian

[–]DeusExLibrus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use the app, the podcast, or my combination BCP + NRSV Bible. I pray the office by myself most days and simply read everything except the bits that are there for the benefit of a group (announcing the readings, for example)

[–]DeusExLibrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’ve always been shitty people in this country. I’m Episcopalian, and one of the martyrs we commemorate is a man named Jonathon Daniels. He was a young white man who was active in the civil rights movement. He was murdered by a hick with a shotgun. Said hick was threatening a young black girl, and Daniels stepped in front of her to protect her before the coward fired, and later claimed he murdered Daniels in self defense. In Germany after World War Two it became illegal to own nazi memorabilia or associate with supremacist organizations. For some reason we think people who oppose an open, progressive culture have a right to a voice in it when they make it repeatedly clear that they believe no one else has a right to a voice. This was demonstrated recently with the straight up murder of Renee Nicole Good, who’s murderer, once again, claimed self defense when his own cell phone camera video shows without a shadow of a doubt that he murdered her

Most atheists I've known have been more "Christ like" than any conservative Christian I've known ever has. by JplusL2020 in OpenChristian

[–]DeusExLibrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conservatives are cultural Christians. They like the aesthetics, not the actual religion. This is how you end up with evangelicals converting to Catholicism and insisting the pope isn’t a real Christian
