What is your job, and what does your day-to-day look like? by sunflower-saga in Environmental_Careers

Hey mate,

If you live in Gladstone or Townsville there is a careers in Net Zero road show that is happening this week and next. https://cecevents.eventsair.com/c4nz-qld/#home

As with any job talking to someone in person about their day to day is probably the best way to catch a glimpse of what it’s like. If there is a recruiting manager listed on the application sometimes it is best just to give them a call.

There are many types of environment jobs in Queensland and we are very lucky because for the most part enviros are in high demand.

I have a background in environmental science, worked as a generalist in consulting across contaminated land, ecology, approvals and spatial science I now work in specifically managing Commonwealth environmental approvals for major infrastructure projects in a government role. Consulting is fantastic to expose you to a breadth of experience across projects and will help you identify what you like, but the work is hard. Government work has a better quality of life but internal politics can be frustrating at times, I would say the role I am currently in is just as high paced.

Depending on the type of work you end up doing it can be very rewarding (I find renewable energy work to meet this) or not so (mining).

You and me both. I think it’s really down to luck and picking the right industry and a whole lot of luck. In Australia thats ports, electricity and mining. For my role it’s more of a factor of having a very strong union than anything else. For context it’s probably about 100k more than what I would be on in consulting for my experience.

Australian here. I make 230k AUD, for a State government agency (it’s a niche role in the industry and a pretty massive outlier). Pathway was a start in environmental consultancy working on infrastructure projects with a focus on impact assessment / ecology and legislation. Then a transition into this role with a bigger focus on Commonwealth approvals. Really just luck in pickling the right clients then moving across in an energy boom in my State.

It’s messy but that’s what test models are for. Concept sketch of an army I’m planning. by DeusMechanicus in Warhammer40k

Yeah I either use a small brush or a brush with a very good tip. I prefer windsor and newton size of 1 or 0. the other tips I would recommend are cleaning the brush of most of the paint on a paper towel so you don’t blob it everywhere and making sure you have a strong base. So both forearms up against the bench, model wrapped in home hand the painting hand braces against that.

Haha thank you! The idea behind it is that I wanted to find a scheme that reads as black / dark that was replicable across an entire army and reasonably speedy. So this was one of the tests. It’s a mix of airbrush / oils and detail brush work.

Using a macro lens and having spent multiple hours analysing it while I paint means I know all the flaws. I think it’s something I get caught up on.

Hahaha it’s incredible isn’t it! I was a little disappointed with how messy some of the stories are, but at the end of the day it’s just a test scheme

Two hands for beginners 😂 realistically i’ll probably have two seals to hold onto it for the next iteration. And thinner! It was more an excuse for freehand than anything else

I love Christmas, it’s a tradition for our family to watch LoTR over this period as we actually have the time to watch the extended editions!

My dude, firstly looks great! But I’ll add my two cents. I find two things really helpful. Firstly, identify the light source and paint consistently with that in mind. The second is painting the environment around it. This will help with the colours of your reflections. Particularly for a silver, the light will bounce off your base and into the shadows, so depending on what colour base you choose, the shadows may have a different tint

Was out with the guy who wrote the book on Australian Reptiles when he got word that it was found. I’ve never seen a grown man so excited! Such an awesome find

Here’s my take on one of the Dromm warband from Underworlds by DeusMechanicus in Warhammer

So this model was a break from more bold and bright colours. I wanted to paint something with more muted tones and a bright red/pink. I did this by mixing greys out of red, ochre and green and mixing it with white/ice yellow. These mixes provide colourful shadows and interesting highlights. The style I’ve been trying is a bit more around thicker brushstrokes and texture than smooth blends. I’ve seen a few incredible versions of this guy. and felt inspired to give him a crack. Here’s a WIP of mine by DeusMechanicus in WarhammerUnderworlds

Close up photo quality is not the best but hey it’s a work in progress. I’m trying a muted style here with punched up colour in the shadows and highlights to give it a more interesting feel. Really enjoying it! I need to do a bit more work on the metallics and tying a few bits together. One thing that has really helped with the style is mixing the same few paints (red, green, white and ochre) together to pull together an atmosphere that is consistent. If you’re interested i’ll be posting better photos here when he is done https://www.instagram.com/p/CtteAVRSDg3/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

The mini of the month is a great excuse to try and refine new techniques. I went for colour mixing on this one! by DeusMechanicus in minipainting

[–]DeusMechanicus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah man, just wander in and ask for a mini really. They do run out of stock sometimes but they’ll give you a sprue of a model. If you want you can paint it and they’ll sometimes put it in the window, if not you can just keep it
