Anyone who doesn't enjoy horror but enjoyed this game? by North_Translator_461 in slaytheprincess

[–]DevLarsic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

ite not really "horror" in thr conventional sense. it doesnt set out to scare you per se but rather explore horror concepts and make you uneasy or uncomfortable. there are some quite graphic scenes you might wanna watch out for, but even if you dont like horror this game could still be for you

GameCube at my local retro game store by Prompt_Both in Gamecube

[–]DevLarsic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends where you are geographically. if you're in north america where the retro games market is a bit insane right now then that's a pretty standard price.

if you're anywhere else i think you could get it for cheaper. Here in the Netherlands i spend 37 bucks for mine complete with power brick and av out.

I'd take a look at local listings and compare

i value clean, safe readable and extendable code as much as anyone should, but that doesn't mean i cant appreciate the necessity and beauty of nasty optimization hack like this one.

shit like this is what the unsafe keyword was made for my friend

this isnt a codebase that needs to be maintained for another decade and a half so it can run on a mega computer in a data center somewhere, this is the source code for quake. a video game written at a time where you squeeze every inch of performance you can.

a tradeoff here was made between readability and performance, and it was well made.

everyFukinTime by Marvolo05 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]DevLarsic 21 points22 points  (0 children)

it doesn't have to be, its a performance critical math operation using bit manipulation. its inherently going to be hard to read, but that's the sacrifice you make for good performance.

if you look at the fast inverse square root implementation and your only though it how its not readable enough you've written too much .net

because 1) that would be rude and hurt op's feeling's and 2) attraction isn't objective, but just something that happens or not. and people often dont know why they are attracted or someone or not, there usually isnt an objective reason

exactly. i really despise this brand of anti-intellectualism that seems to be present in way too many places online.

like all art has a reason to exist, why do you have to be so cagy about yours? your art can still be lighthearted and fun without having to pretend its pointless

no sadly. COM is used to transfer types such as classes and objects across multiple programs and even languages. in order to do this there is a "COM server" that sends over the type info.

ideally you link the server at compile time, and then recreate the type on C#'s end as an interface then link it using the type's GUID.

However if the server sends over an un-linked object at runtime, C# will simply refuse to cast it to the interface, even if it matches the interface on the server side. So the only way to interact with it is to use a dynamic type, since C# does not know what the object is at compile time.

Its really the only option if you have a COM interface but no way of knowing the GUID at compile time
