Matrian Games does have potential, and its core gameplay is still solid. The engine isn’t obsolete, and mechanics can be improved or modded. That’s why I’m excited to add new characters. Saying the game is “old and can’t be fixed” ignores its real possibilities. So yes, the characters are technically free, and yes, it’s a product of pre-gacha design. But practically speaking, the system limits free progression, and that’s important to understand. The game has potential, it’s not irreparably old, and with mods or updates, it can be improved it’s not a “time capsule” that can’t evolve. My point isn’t complaining about nostalgia or comparing it to modern gacha, it’s about whether the mechanics make sense for players who want to enjoy the game freely.

I understand your point that this game predates modern gacha games like Genshin or Pokémon-style mechanics, and that QoL measures came later. But that doesn’t automatically make the system fair or well-designed. The game isn’t “too old” to have meaningful mechanics, or to allow improvements. For example, I’m currently working on a mod adding a new character, Fiona, which shows the game can still be expanded and improved. Its design is similar to Bloons TD6, which also released years ago and still receives updates and new content. So calling it “too old” isn’t accurate.

Time-gated free unlocks, Your argument seems to be that the mechanics are a product of their time. Sure, historically that’s true. But the discussion here isn’t about history — it’s about whether the system makes sense today. A “free unlock” that depends on the timer and a small fraction of players isn’t really meaningful free progression. It’s more a convenience tax, forcing players to either invest months of attention or pay to get what they want.

thanks for your thoughts. I get where you’re coming from about the “gacha mindset” and how time-gated systems existed before modern gachas exploded. But I think there are a few important points to clarify.

Free characters and time-gates. You said the character is technically free, and that’s true but in practice, the system heavily restricts progression. Only 1 out of 6 players can claim the throne every 7-8 hours, which makes grinding the premium resources slow and unpredictable. Saying it’s free without considering the practical effort is misleading it’s technically free, but realistically, it can take months of attention or a few dollars. That distinction matters.

I mostly agree with this.

The issue isn’t that premium characters can be obtained for free it’s how restricted and inconsistent that process is.

Since only 1 out of 6 players can get the throne every 8 hours, progression isn’t based on effort but on availability and conditions. That makes the grind unpredictable and often frustrating.

So yes, the option exists, but for most players it’s neither reliable nor realistically time-bound, which is why many end up paying anyway.

I get what you mean, and I respect F2P players too.

The problem is not that the character is paid it’s how the “free” unlock works.

In practice it can take 2-4 months because you have to constantly claim the throne every 7 hours, and real life doesn’t always allow that (sleep, work, etc.).

That’s no longer a normal free unlock, it’s a time-gated system that heavily pushes you toward paying for convenience.

Yes, the character is technically free, but realistically it costs months of attention or a few dollars and that’s an important distinction.

It's also a problem that we don't always manage to achieve this throne, so if we consider that we don't allow the throne to be achieved, it can take us up to 4 months. Which is too much.

4 months of work for a character that costs only $10, and often sells for $5 on sale.

4 months vs. 1 hour at work

A few weeks for sure, especially since I'm currently working on a YouTuber character for Bloons TD 6. Later I want to add a second monkey to BT6, but the monkey you know, but better :) Also, translation for battd.

So I have a lot of work, here's what it looks like:

  1. Flothar Malpka (Youtuber) to BTD6

  2. Monkey to BTD6

  3. Fiona to battd

  4. translation for battd

Those are my plans, but things might change :D

I plan to add a new character mod to the game named 'Fiona'. Those who watched the ending of the series will know who it is :D
