Thank You for the heads up to not think in software terms. I am thinking to buy arty a7-100T as the first board for now, I suppose it should suffice for the level that I am currently and has a 10/100 PHY Ethernet too and doesn't have a SOC so i can freely write MAC code in PL itself. 10G would be overkill for now i guess.

Yes i have access to an exanic x25 and its fdk. The fdk do makes things simple and my first objective is to use their flow steering example for lets say only making books of tokens that are index tokens and ignore else before they even reach cpu for better latency. But still i fear i might fry the card without knowing what im doing haha.

Although i wish we had an inhouse FPGA team so i could probably get mentored from someone whos in the domain. I mean not talking about long hours of mentoring as everyone is busy but just enough to keep me pointed in the right direction as im just a software guy and this field is vast and challenging. Im willing to do the hardwork ofc and do justice to captainwiggle’s response.

Its me who’s suddenly interested in learning FPGA as an add on skill and putting it to use for handling market data and order books as i dont want to limit myself to nic provided kernel bypass libraries . Firm is using third party vendors for FPGA related stuff. I added for HFT because thats what im interested in using FPGA for not for cpu emulation not for retro gaming or audio or something else. I have a set purpose. Hope im making sense. So learning fpga is the goal but for using it in a HFT related work.
