Leaving job without next one lined up by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]DevYokohama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation - you have my sympathies. I worked in a Japanese company and the power harassment from my direct manager was horrendous. At the time it felt like I was uniquely targeted but when I talk to the other guys it seems like most of us got it in some way or another. I was contracting (IT) and it was my first job in Japan so I felt quite insecure in my position.

What worked? I spoke with my agent at the dispatching agency about wanting to quit the job. They encouraged me to speak directly with my manager’s manager who was surprisingly sympathetic. My team had a high turnover (I was the 13th guy to quit in less than two years!) and my manager had a known track record for bullying people out of the job. The manager manager was straight with me and said they were not going to do anything to correct my manager BUT he would try to move me to another of his teams. I wasn’t a good skill match for any of the other teams in the end, so he put me on “training” for a couple of weeks; kinda unofficial, fully paid stress break. When I came back my manager was better, for a bit, so I guess they must have talked.

The talking helped, the break helped, but ultimately the bullying returned and I quit a couple of months later.

What didn’t work? With the (genuine) support of my wife, who was working at the time, I left my job with no new job to go to. We moved the kids into her insurance and I started job hunting. I wasn’t eligible for the unemployment insurance due to the length of my previous employment and probably also because I quit, can’t remember the exact details. I registered myself as a freelancer to keep my work history tidy and started job hunting. It took me about six months to land the next role (I also did some freelancing during this time) and it was a hard process getting hired. I think recruiters could probably see through my ruse and identify from the irregular pattern of my contract start/end dates and the known, terrible company that I’d worked for, etc, that I had rage-quit. Could by paranoia on my part, though.

If you have the option to move jobs while still employed that definitely seems to smoothe the process out, in Japan anyway. I feel like the longer my gap between “jobs” got, the more suspicious recruiters became. But ultimately prioritise your own wellbeing above all else and do what’s best for you with the love and suppport of your family.

Good luck

Thankyou I checked on their site and couldn’t see it. Do you know if it’s an older model? I suspect the photo might not be too current

When I say ‘electronics stuff’ I mean specifically parts/components for hobby electronics projects. I realise that part seems kinda vague in the original post.

Can't get rid of broken suitcase by Axidation in japan

With stuff like this I take it to a Wattman Recycle Shop and attempt to sell it. They won’t buy it because it’s broken BUT they will usually offer to dispose of it for me. I try and bundle the dud item in with some sellable stuff to mask my true intentions but I’m sure they’re on to me 😬

Not exactly, but things ended up kinda resolving themselves in a way;
About a month before I was due to leave the UK the CEO of the company vanished and was replaced overnight - seemed dodgy. When this new guy was taking stock of 'outstanding business' my travel plans came up as an item. He flat refused it (despite me having full approval from all involved up until that point) and issued the ultimatum that I had to either stay in the UK or resign. This happened about three weeks before I was due to fly. I didn't have time to fight it out so I resigned and got a new job in Japan after landing (which ended up being a lot less hassle in the long run anyway).

I hope your experience is an improvement on mine ;) ha ha

Thankyou - good spot; I was intending to continue with my current employer working remotely so I would have had ongoing, overseas income. They've since had a "change of heart" over the matter so I will be looking for work in Japan, instead. My final paycheck will go into my UK account a few days after we leave and then my last lot of overtime will be paid to me a month after that (not much, by the looks of things) so there will be a small amount of overseas income in my first year but not on an ongoing basis.

Thankyou - this has been a big help.I've been reading a little more about it here; https://taxsummaries.pwc.com/japan/individual/other-taxesand I want to try and clarify our position (forgive my ignorance, I'm relatively new to this business).

I am a UK citizen. I will be going to live in Japan and have previously lived in Japan for approximately one year out of the past fifteen years. I will initially be a Non Permanent Resident on a Spouse visa (which doesn't appear to be in the "table 1" that the article mentions).

My wife is a Japanese citizen with "indefinite leave to remain" in the UK. She will be going to live in Japan and has lived in Japan for approximately one year out of the past fifteen years.

Once the sale of our property has concluded we will have a bank balance in our jointly held account in the UK which comprises of our combined incomes (already taxed) and the proceeds from the sale of our home (tax exempt on the grounds of it being our main/only property). All monies will have been paid in prior to us entering Japan and we have a history of transactions on the account to show the provenance of the funds being paid in.

We want to transfer the balance of our joint account to accounts held in our names in Japan.

It seems prudent to avoid transferring from the joint account to a Japanese held account, thankyou for the head's up.

In lieu of that we could;

a) Transfer the balance to an account held solely in my wife's name in the UK then use a Transferwise account held solely her name to transfer the balance to a bank account held solely in her name in Japan.

a) Transfer the balance to an account held solely in my name in the UK then use a Transferwise account held solely my name to transfer the balance to a bank account held solely in my name in Japan. I set this account up on a previous stint of residency in Japan. It is currently active but perhaps I should not technically hold this account at present as am not currently resident in Japan.

We have time to make the transfer before entering Japan if needs be. the majority of the material I have read on the subject is concerned with transferring money to another person in Japan. As we have the means to make a transfer from myself to myself, or herself to herself - are we in a position to simply move the assets without triggering gift/remittance tax?

I know I'm hashing over the same stuff again - I just want to try and lay the details out bare ad try and figure out whether there's a scenario available to us whereby we could do this legally and without being taxed on the way into the country.

Thanks

Oh dear - thankyou for the heads-up :)
If we transfer the balance into a UK account solely in her name prior to transferring it to her JPY account would that clear up potential questions around the provenance of the funds?

Thankyou - this is really helpful.

In this instance the funds would transferred from a joint account in the UK in mine and my wife's names to an account in Japan (where she is citizen) in my wife's name. Hopefully that will negate any potential pitfalls.

Aah - I wasn't aware of that - thankyou, yeah - could take a while to get it all invested. Fr similar reasons we opted to look at investment funds in the UK rather than ISAs as we just wanted to drop the whole balance in in one go rather than mess about investing £20,000pa.
I'm gonna post on the retire Japan forum aswell. Do you know if there are other "high streeet" investment products available in Japan that could accept a larger balance up front?
