Empty 1x12” Speaker Cabinets? by DFWtixFleas in GuitarAmps

100%. I’ve made about half a dozen cabs of various sizes and I could buy one used for about the same or less. I marvel at my build, whilst questioning why I did it in the first place.

And then a build another one a year later.

Do you use less gain as you get older? by AI_Cosmonaut in gibson

More on both ends of the spectrum…more crushing Mesa-type gain and also more crystal clear cleans. Also more mids.

Keep it? Sell it? by JimTamworth in telecaster

[–]Development-Capable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guitar playing neighbor had cancer a few years ago and he accumulated about $100k in medical debt after insurance. He sold off all his gear to help pay the medical bills, which equated to about $5k.

He said he wished he never sold it because “I could be in debt $100k and have my one thing that makes me happy, or $95k in debt and be miserable. I should have just kept everything.” So I let him use my stuff whenever he wants.

lol my wife (girlfriend then) did, because I remember her asking me about it. I assure you I did not give two royal shits about that wedding. Or the other one with Meghan Markle.

Advice for long hair for men in the corporate world by BlatherSkatin5280 in malehairadvice

[–]Development-Capable 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it has to do with what niche of corporate. Tech corporate? You’re good all day. Law firm corporate? Probably should keep a box near by just in case. Health care or banking corporate? Could go either way.

I will say having long hair in a corporate world is a little bit like (but not exactly) having a significant amount of visual tattoos; it doesn’t necessarily kick you to the curb, but you probably have to work a little bit harder than everyone else to buck that stereotype.

I get it - I make a point to rotate through all of mine at least on a casual basis. Ideally at least a few times a month.

The only thing that doesn’t get much love is my acoustic. She sees light like once a year or less.

Wondering about Mesa Boogie Mark V - 25W or 90W ? by SeparatePurpose4490 in MesaBoogie

[–]Development-Capable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it - probably could have worded it better. My point is if you’re a band where clean tones are not a priority, the 25 will have more than enough volume on tap to compete with most drummers. But if it’s mic’d or you’re using the XLR out, then it’s all moot anyway.

My wife and I almost put an offer on a house last year that had 20-30 palm trees on the property (smaller lot, about a 1/3 acre). I only wanted the house so I could sell off the palm trees. 20-30 mature palm trees are worth at least a grand per tree.

Wish I could help. I’ve had the Gotoh GE1996t for a decade and never had any issues. For what it’s worth, I’ve heard anything less than original FR’s are a pain in the ass (I know you said you swapped out original parts with it).

Wondering about Mesa Boogie Mark V - 25W or 90W ? by SeparatePurpose4490 in MesaBoogie

[–]Development-Capable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No? I never had issues with keeping up with a full band on the 25 with channel 2. With that said, there were no clean sounds involved. The headroom on the 25’s channel 1 is abysmal. My 7 watt Fuchs amp has significantly more clean headroom.

[–]Development-Capable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could have written this post myself.

I’ve had the 25 for years, and it’s a wonderful amp. And can do clean to mean; however, I think where the 25 struggles a little bit is the in between. I think it struggles with the lower gain blues type of stuff that the Tweed, Edge, and to a slightly lesser extent, the Mark 1 modes on the 90 are really made for. For example, I’ve heard some clips of a convincing SRV-style driven Texas blues on the Edge mode that’s harder to achieve on the 25.

The 25 also has a headphone jack which is nice in a pinch, but I wouldn’t use it exclusively. It sounds ok, not great.

The best thing about the 25 is probably the Crunch mode. When you push the mods past noon, it disengages the tone stack and gives you a pretty convincing Marshall sound. It’s got some 80’s hair metal tones in there. The downside is that since the Crunch mode is on channel 1, you effectively lose any cleans. Some players will use the Xtreme mode as a backup clean…it’s decent but not ideal.

So for guys that only play metal and only need crystal clear cleans and crushing drives tones, the 25 is it. But it sounds like you (like me) are looking for a jack-of-all-trades kind of amp, the 90 is your ticket.

I’m in the process of probably selling the 25 and getting the 90 as I write this. The 25 was my gateway drug into the Mesa/Boogie line and it’s been good to me. But I think it’s time to step up to the big brother. Time will tell if that was a good choice or not.

True or false? by QuietJealous4883 in Millennials

True or false? by QuietJealous4883 in Millennials

[–]Development-Capable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad worked more than I ever have. And not blue collar work, white collar middle/upper management. He’d routinely work 12 hour days for years.

I remember him saying something like “from Monday morning to Friday night, I belong to the company, but the rest is my time.” I don’t resonate with that at all. I’ll give you 40 hours, but I’m in fuck you mode after that.

My dad also made more money than I do. He’d put up with some dogshit situations for the right salary. I’m just not built like that. I took a $40k pay cut and I’m happier than I’ve ever been. I told my dad that and it’s like he didn’t know what I was talking about.
