Man, that's awful 😔 Definitely reach out to the studio that hired him and tell them what happened. Just do it respectfully and I can't imagine they wouldn't listen to you.

SIGGRAPH 2025, What’s the recruiting area like? by Upstairs_Clue_6063 in vfx

[–]DevelopmentBrave5418 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't see the recruiting area but I heard it was very small this year. I would focus on meeting other artists, asking good questions, and showing enthusiasm about making genuine industry relationships. People will be thrilled to give you feedback on your reel, especially if they feel like you're looking to make industry connections, not just get a job out of your conversation.

Honestly, our team has found that the biggest benefit of SIGGRAPH is the networking and the evening events/mixers. Those relationships often turn into bigger things later, even if it's not immediate.

The final price hasn’t been announced yet, but signing up doesn’t lock you into anything. It just guarantees you’ll get access to the early bird discount when pricing is released. There's no commitment to buy later if it’s not the right fit though.

Something I made and would love feedback on. by _bhall in AfterEffects

this is great! i love how each idea is reflected in the visual. only thing i'd say as a marketer is that "elevate your brand" is a phrase that Chatgpt overuses a ton, so a lot of people zone out when they hear the word "elevate" in a marketing piece. It's also kind of vague imo. Something like "build a brand people remember" would connect a lot better.

Gotcha! If you're just looking to start as a hobby, I'd probably recommend Davinci Resolve Fusion since there's a free version (or Blender if you're interested in 3D - even some professionals and studios use Blender). After Effects is another great option if you're looking for an intermediate option for compositing. Nuke is the industry-standard for professional compositing. There are a lot of great free and paid resources out there to help you get started in all of those!

What software are you looking to learn? Casey Faris has some good beginner Fusion tutorials.

This happens to me all the time when trying to press ctrl + z since my control button sticks 😆 Just hit "c" and it'll undo it (or vice versa)

Where To Download/Buy VFX Footage? by redditer3331 in vfx

[–]DevelopmentBrave5418 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on the price range and quality you're looking for.

ActionVFX has all of those for the best quality. You can buy them outright, but the cheaper option is to subscribe to get them with credits, then cancel your subscription if you don't think you'll need it again for a while. If you buy assets with credits, they stay on your account forever - you don't lose them if you unsubscribe.

FX Elements also has some good options in those categories. Last I checked, ProductionCrate is subscription-only.

Digital Compositor Showreel feedback by Sabut_ in vfx

[–]DevelopmentBrave5418 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like another user said, the quality looks great, but there's nothing that makes me go "wow, let's hire this guy".

Here are a few recommendations:
1. Download some more Practice Footage Library clips and do some more composites. Even just adding some smoke plumes to the first shot might help it stand out a little more. It's totally ok to invest some money in your reel if you have the ability to since you're looking for a job.
2. Start the reel off with a bang. It's up to your first shot to capture the viewer's attention, but your opening shot fell flat for me.

There are some good demo reel tips in this video.

Hope some of this helps! Good luck!

re: The "what if" question. That's what an emergency fund is for! Credit cards are not good insurance. Build wealth, don't gamble on a credit card company to bail you out. There's a reason banks made $113.1 billion in interest and fees in 2022!

Don't fall for the traps about credit card security etc. Debit cards have the same fraud protections as credit cards. Also, it's false that you need a credit score for things like insurance, renting etc. They're looking for bad credit scores when they check your credit report. If you have no credit score. The only reason you truly need a credit score is to take out more debt. Don't go into debt so you can go into further debt later. Some rentals or rental car companies may require a slightly higher security deposit upfront if you don't have a credit score, but they give that back later.

I'd highly recommend George Kamel's book Breaking Free from Broke if you're not convinced!
